2. Learning Outcomes
We will explore the often-difficult balance
between meeting our personal needs and the
needs of others.
We will uphold the values of common good
and stewardship and how to incorporate
them our personal decision making process.
We will examine how we use our time,
talent, and treasure, and make decisions
about how we can use these god given gifts
to promote both our personal good and the
common good.
4. unpacking the story
Write a few sentences to tell....
what you think is the moral of the story
what the story reveals about human
nature, sharing, or solutions to hunger
5. Stewardship
All that we are and all that we have are
gifts from God.
God created the world in such a way that
there is enough of everything for everyone,
if only we learn to share it properly.
In place of a mentality of scarcity,
stewardship offers us an image of
abundance and promotes sharing as a
natural way of life.
6. More on
Stewardship
Stewardship calls for us to share
ourselves, to be a holy people, to step up
and take the risk of walking with Christ.
We are called to be disciples and
caretakers of God’s many gifts.
Stewardship is an attitude, a way of life.
7. stewardship
Questions
Why do you think some people are afraid to
share a lot of what they have?
How would life be different if you felt like
you could share everything you have?
What benefits do you see in a life in which a
person feels that everything she/he has is
meant to be shared?
8. YOU!
What are you already doing or have you
done in the past to share your time, your
talent, or your treasure?
9. Common good
Common good is, in part, about how we see
ourselves relationship to those around us.
Do we view our need for others as a blessing or a curse?
Are we driven more by competition than cooperation?
Are we out strictly for our own good or do the needs and wants of
others come into play in our life choices?
Common good proclaims that we are all
linked to one another and that our common
decisions need to be made in a way that
benefits all.
10. adding your piece to
the pot: Discuss and
Report
How do you see the value of stewardship and concern for the
common good in the world today?
Where do you see these values pushed aside or openly rejected?
What makes these principles valuable and attractive as a way of
life?
What makes living them out difficult and challenging?
Give an example of how sharing one’s talents and working for the
common good can benefit both the individual and the group.
12. Lectio Divina
Read John 6:1-14
First Reading: Listen to the reading
Second Reading: What is a word or passage
that speaks to your heart?
Third Reading: Is there a word or passage
that you think God is calling your
attention to? Does that seem to call for
some response from you?
13. commitment to the
common good
Consider a problem in the world today
Develop a poster (using words and pictures)
that shows how stewardship (sharing of
time, talent, treasure) could help to
alleviate the problem
14. Our Jubilee Gifts
Loving God, we are the work of your hands. Life and all the good
things of our world are gifts from you.
We thank you for the many ways you have blessed us and our land.
Help us to remember your goodness and to accept the challenge of
sharing who we are and what we have with others.
Help us to freely share our time and talent with others.
Give us the confidence we need to speak out for those whose needs
remain unmet.
Help us to be as generous in sharing our possessions and resources
with others as you have been in sharing your gifts of life and love
with us. We ask this in the name of Jesus, or teacher and our friend,
now and forever. Amen.
