Alternating voltages and currents (AC) are used instead of direct currents (DC) for power transmission for three main reasons: (1) AC can be transmitted over long distances more efficiently than DC using transformers, (2) AC motors are simpler and cheaper to build than DC motors, (3) AC generation is simpler than DC since AC can be generated directly by an alternator while DC requires additional conversion equipment.
