An Amazon EC2 instance is a virtual server that allows users to run applications and software in the AWS cloud infrastructure. EC2 instances are launched from machine images called AMIs that contain the operating system and software. There are different types of EC2 instances that vary in CPU, memory, storage and networking resources to suit different workload needs. Launching and connecting to an EC2 instance involves signing up for AWS, creating a key pair, launching an instance from an AMI, connecting to it using the key pair, customizing it, and then terminating the instance when done.

4. Amazon EC2 instance
• An Amazon EC2 instance is a virtual server in Amazon's Elastic
Compute Cloud (EC2) for running applications on the Amazon Web
Services (AWS) infrastructure.
• An Instance is a virtual machine which runs our workloads in the
cloud. Often the term VM Virtual Machine & Instance are used
interchangeably.
• AWS is a comprehensive, evolving cloud computing platform; EC2 is a
service that enables business subscribers to run application programs
in the computing environment.
• It can serve as a practically unlimited set of virtual machines (VMs).
5. • Amazon provides various types of instances with different
configurations of CPU, memory, storage and networking resources to
suit user needs.
• Each type is available in various sizes to address specific workload
requirements.
6. • Instances are created from Amazon Machine Images (AMI).
• The machine images are like templates.
• They are configured with an operating system (OS) and other
software, which determine the user's operating environment.
7. Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2)
• Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) are the basic building blocks of Amazon
EC2
• An AMI is a template that contains a software configuration (operating
system, application server and applications) that can run on Amazon’s
computing environment
• AMIs can be used to launch an instance, which is a copy of the AMI
running as a virtual server in the cloud.
8. Getting Started with Amazon EC2
• Step 1: Sign up for Amazon EC2
• Step 2: Create a key pair
• Step 3: Launch an Amazon EC2 instance
• Step 4: Connect to the instance
• Step 5: Customize the instance
• Step 6: Terminate instance and delete the volume created
