3. Why do people read
magazines? Especially teenage girls!!!
Entertainment
- filling time
- -Getting the latest knowledge or
gossip
- - to relax
- self education- if the reader was
reading a netball magazine then
they would know all the teams and
games around there area/country.
Information
-seeking advice or reassuring information
-latest news of there favourite artist's and
celebrity's.
- Curiosity towards a range of
4. I feel that my magazine would be similar to
BILBOARD and the audience I have chosen is
women. I have chosen this because there is not a
music magazine that targets directly at women.
Therefor I have a gap in the market. I Have also
chosen women as my target as I am including a
small majority of the magazine to include beauty
and fashion tips for festivals. However the music I
would be focusing on would be indie/pop music
that would be played at festivals.
5. Billboard brand is built on its exclusive
charts and unrivalled reporting on the
latest news, issues and trends across all
genres of music. the target audience is
likely to be aimed at both females and
males, however, it is more likely to aim at
males due to the rhythm and of the pace
the songs that the artist distribute. The
target audience could possibly be ages
ranged from 14-28 as many teenagers like
fast pace music as well as young adults. I
believe these that this could be the target
audience as many young adults and
teenagers in society today loves listening
to upbeat music where they are able to
express how they are like and
choreographer to these types of music
6. The target audience forVIBE is R&B , hip-hop
and rap listeners 18-34
This means that the content featured within
the magazine should be aimed at younger
adults, with
content, features, references, etc, all being
relative to the 1980's and early 90's, which is
what the audience would be fond of.
The ratio between the 2 genders is almost
exactly equal, meaning thatVibe is aimed
towards both genders. This means that the
audience forVibe would be larger meaning
they would need to include a mixture of uni-sex
features. NME, is mostly aimed at males and
includes mostly male bands. A larger audience
means increase in success for a brand likeVibe.
7. Before I set out my questionnaire i decided just to ask young
women aged 16-19.I Knew I wanted to ask this audience as
there is no other magazine offering to young women. I
personally fit into the target audience so it was easy for me
to know what magazines are out there for me and others
around my age and gender.
I found that there is a gap in the market for a niche
magazine that combines pop/indie music with fashion and
makeup aimed at a primary audience of middle
class, teenage females
8. I mixedCosmopolitan, NME and billboard together to
make a magazine directed at young women. I chose
cosmopolitan as it is not a music magazine but it is a
fashion and beauty magazine, then NME billboard as
my genre of music chosen is indie/pop. A cross-genre (or
hybrid genre) is a genre in fiction that blends themes
and elements from two or more different genres
The next slide shows a mood board of pictures to show
what my target audience are interested in and what
things appeal to them…
9.
10. The primary audience for my product would be females as my magazine is of a hybrid
genre which includes fashion & beauty. This will be combined with the genre of indie
and pop music. The secondary audience would be males, as the majority of males are
not interested in fashion and beauty. The age range for my primary audience would
be teenagers to young adults as I think that these make up a large percentage of
people that listen to popular chart and indie music.
My secondary audience would be people that would not necessarily buy my
magazine, but would read it when partners, friends or family members had purchased
it. I would aim my magazine at 16-19 year olds, however this may not be the only age
range that would read it. I would aim my magazine at a demographic who are very
interested in popular and indie music, and celebrities that are in the charts. I would
also aim my product at people who are interested in the style and fashions that these
artists show. However, these may not be the only people that would be reading my
product as some people may just read it because it is available to them
(friends, partners etc.).
The demographic for my product would be people who desire to be likeThe artists
they like this includes style, make up and what they like. These are a mix of
mainstream people who shop in places such asTop shop and Office, and vintage
shops.
11. Within my research, I have been looking at the biggest stars in the
genre of pop that I can re-create within my own product. These are
huge names such as Kanye west, Miley Cyrus and JustinTimberlake
The most popular band is rudimental, Bastille and two door cinema
club were second favourites .
I also looked at people who create pop music and are also seen as
fashion Icons, such as the names listed above. This is the reason I
thought that a hybrid genre of pop and fashion would work well
because more or less the same celebrities relate to both.
For example; Miley Cyrus is one of the biggest pop stars right now
, but is also a huge fashion icon. Thus the same audience would be
interested, and would be interested in my product. However I would
not include death metal band and fashion tips
12. REPRESENTATION-the description or
portrayal of someone or something in a
particular way.The model I have used
portrays an idol and the target audience.
I have chosen a mode of address with the use of intersexuality within my features
creates a code that the audience of my magazine would understand.
14. I will post photos daily on
instagram of photoshoots and
promotions to gain more of a
audiance
TWITTER is the most used social networking
as I found out in my questionnaire .

19. I researched the music magazines we love pop and Q in order to
get an idea of the different media conventions and institutions
to how I should develop and distribute the music magazine I
made ‘instant’. Both magazines share the similarities of being
chart music but they are for different ages.As Q compliments
both sexes welovepop appeals to young women.
The brand statement for Billboard magazine is “Billboard is the
world's most influential music media brand”.
The statement Billboard have made helps sell the brand as it
uses statistics and so people are likely to believe facts over
opinions and buy the magazine thinking it is professional and
popular. My brand statement is “Instant pride on being the most
Individual music fashion magazine”
20. Bauer Media Group is a multinational media
company headquartered in Hamburg, Germany which operates in 16
countries worldwide. Bauer Media Group has a 50% stake in the British
television company BoxTelevision, the other half owned by Channel 4.
BoxTelevision acts as the content subsidiary that produces several
popular music television channels, which include:
4Music
The Box
Heat
Kerrang!
Kiss
Magic
Smash Hits
This group would make instant
magazine very popular as they
can advertise on theTV, And in
the sister magazines
21. Bauer Media Group produce Q magazine and
also kerrang!
The brand statement for Kerrang magazine is
“the worlds biggest selling weekly rock
magazine”.
This statement helps sell the brand as it uses
statistics and so people are likely to believe
facts over opinions and buy the magazine
thinking it is professional and popular
22. Promotions could be done onTV as they are
50% stake of boxtelevision.This would
make the magazine prone to new
costumers and a bigger audience.
23.
24. My magazine has used many codes and
conventions many magazines use.
A CODE is a cultural sign that the audience
understand e.g. A heart = love.
A CONVENTION is defining features of a type
of media e.g. theme tune always goes at the
start of aTV show...)
25. The masthead of my magazine is large front size and stands out what is needed and is one of the conventions of
magazines. This is also the brand of my magazine. As you can see on front covers 1 and 2 I have put the image in
front of my text, this is because I do not want over layering and it is big and easy to read so the reader can still see the
image and make out the writing. Also Masthead always goes top left because we read from top left as a culture.
the main heading is introducing my star and the person on the front cover, as you can see I have picked
billboard this is because they are a similar music magazine, choosing chart music.ALL of the front covers I have
chosen have the largest text out of the headings telling the reader who is the star and main attraction of the
magazine, this is a well known convention of magazines.
cover star- My main image is of a teenage girl in high street mainstream fashion, I chose this because it reflects
the reader. I would not put a male with a rock band t-shirt on and dreadlocks because that would not appeal to
my particular audience. Codes and connotations can change subtly depending
26.
27. on what the brand is trying to connote to the audience.
On the billboard magazines all have used the similar connotation as
all have a young women on the front.
In my image is used the rule of thirds, direct gaze and a mid shot.
I used these because for example direct gaze looks like the star is
looking directly at the reader making the magazine more inviting
and makes the reader feel special. If you look at my examples all the front
covers use this convention.
my secondary cover lines are smaller but you can see them, all showing the
reader what is inside the magazine. I have used a banner at the bottom of
my front cover this draws the readers eye to it at the very end of looking at
the magazine. Saying that there is festival tickets indie to be won, I used
festival tickets as it is something my audience would want as it is a
magazine. Because my magazine features mainly pop music i would use
features that would go with my magazine like interviews, chart
music, bright colours, current fashion used, current music, easy read
test, give aways like festival tickets, direct address and keep everything
mainstream.
28. I Have used a bar code at the bottom left of the page what is a
convention used in magazine and put the date under the mast
head and put any contact details at the bottom left.my second
front cover featuring lily allen also features contact details at the
bottom left .
I Have kept to a purple, white and black colour code. This counts
as a code as purple is a very feminine colour and bright so the
audience can tell it wouldn't be suitable for boys/men.I kept to a
simple colours of 3 because this is a convention as many
magazines use 5 colours at most, for example billboard use 4
colours that are bright, also linking in with what pop music
magazines as i have said before.
IAlso have a featuring column i used this because it lets the
reader know what type of singers/bands they may listen to and if
this is the magazine for them. I Chose theses singers bands on
what my audience liked and wanted (Questionnaire)
29. Contents page
On my contents page for the masthead saying contents
so the reader knows exactly what the page includes,
I also used the known font of the brand of my magazine
and have my magazine name on the side of the
masthead. This is a convention of magazines as if you look at
my 3rd example the use the billboard name on the side of
there and my first example has the same text used for the
front cover masthead.
All of the contents pages use a star and one main image or 5 at most,I have
written a editor's letter this is also a convention of magazines, if you look at my
second example of contents page you will se that they have used a editors
letter, magazines use this so the reader feels like they are apart of the magazine.
30. I have a what's in every week column
and what's in this weeks column this
is also a convention of magazines as
all y examples show. After each page
number and heading I have a small
paragraph giving information about
what is on that page this is also a
convention used in all my examples. I
have also put all page numbers in
order so it is easy to read and find the
page they want.
37. I have a Bold easy read masthead on my
magazine that attracts the sight of my audience
first.
my Star’s eyes are in top 1/3 of the magazine with
direct gaze making it look like they are looking
directly at the audience. There facial expression is
happy and they are the idol/ideal model for my
audience, this will also attract them to look at my
magazine.
I have a banner at the bottom of my front cover
displaying a prize about festival tickets this will
attract my audience as they are music lovers
38. I have 7 in total features on my front page
notifying that it is value for money as they are
getting a lot for a little.
The price I set is £1.50
I have different size text to show audience
which features are most important. I have
also used a darker colour to show them what
edition it is to catch there eye.
39. My unique Selling Points are clearly defined
by putting the young women on the front of
the magazine displaying my ideal
audience, that is a young women. I have
included a list on singers bands included so
the reader can see easily what genre of music
my magazine is targeted too.if it is not
already obvious by the codes and
conventions used already.
40. I have used a Clear colour scheme of
white, purple and black. Black and white go
againsr easy to make things easy to read and
they stand out because they are opposite, I have
used purple because it is a very feminine colour.I
did not decide to use pink because cosmopolitan
use pink and i wanted my magazine to stand out
easily compared to other magaznes directed at
young women.i have used consistent fonts to
create brand ID, I used the newyorker front for
my masthead and calbri and photoshops
pontsigel in bold the whole way through my
magazine.
41. How did you speak to audience
visually, verbally, through colour?Visually by the
model on the front cover, verbally by ‘chart heat’
I not all festivals and bands that my audience
would be interested in, I have used purple as it’s
a famine colour.
What kind of language (mode of address) do you
use when speaking to the audience? I have used
a friendly approach as I have directed it too
young women
42. I have used ‘newyorker’ font to connote to
the audience that this magazine is for middle
class young women and this font is ideal as it
is simple to read and is classy.
I have created a cheerful and exited value
about my magazine you can tell by the model
on the front facial expressions and it has
bright colour of purple.
My front cover model/star is the idol to many
of my audience
43.
44. In this print screen I have sharpened the image
to make it look better quality and show more
of the image .i did this to make the image look
better quality. I did by first selecting the
sharpen tool then move the round symbol up
and down the line till I found the right
sharpness that complimented the image.
45. IAirbrushed the image
before using it on my front
cover, this gives the effect
of flawless skin and all
magazine use this affect on
there models to make them
more visually pleasing.
I use the airbrush on my
image first I did this by
selecting the airbrush tool.
Then choosing the brush
size then adjusting the
strength of the tool.
I opened my image in
photo shop and used the
quick selection tool to get
rid of the background
behind the model
46. I then selected the brush tool and
picked a colour for the lips, I then
selected the strength of the brush
then glided the tool over her lips
I also selected white
and made her teeth
whiter and brighter
making them stand
out to promote the
up beat of the
magazine.
IThen added another
layer added text to the
front of my magazine
47. For my magazine I decided to use
Photoshop to make my text stand out
away from the main image. Or my first
text “WINTHETOP 10 FESTIVAL
TICKETS INSIDE” I decided to go with
black and white as the are opposite
colours making it more able to stand out.
I also made the stroke structure lager as
you can see on my next image.
On this image I am making the stroke
structure larger to make the text stand
out against the main image and be a
lot thicker in size. I also made this
stand out as it is an important part to
my magazine.
Photo shop—Text
48. Starting
image
I uploaded my image to photoshop then I
chose the quick selection tool and i clicked
on the lower left of the image .then I
dragged the mouse around the image
background. Once I had done that I left
clicked and options came up I then clicked
on ‘fill’
It then came up with what I could fill
the background with I chose white .
This was the image without the
background, I then had to remove the
spaces in-between her arms using the
same tool and technique.
Once I did this I clicked on white
again and I could then go onto
editing the models face.
49. I then chose the blur tool to create a
airbrush effect slightly , I then chose
what size brush I wanted and the
strengh
I then glided the tool over the places I
wanted to blur, including under the eyes
to illuminate any imperfections
I then zoomed into the image using
the zoom tool into the mouth of
the model too use the paint brush to
make her teeth white and her lips
more a pink tone. I did this buy
clicking on the colour I wanted at the
bottom left of the screen then
colouring in the outlines of the
teeth/lips

50. Q7:Looking back at your
preliminary task (Aquinas
College magazine), what do
you feel you have learnt in
the progression to the full
product?
51. My Aquinas magazine front
cover
For my colour scheme i chose black, red and white.
The reason i chose these colours is because of the
Aquinas logo and colours. The logo is in black and
white, andAquinas uses black and red. These colours
also stand out, red stands out on black and white, and
black against white stands out ect. I think i did well
choosing colours as they can be used through the
magazine. I chose the Aquinas lettering and logo on
the front of my magazine as it will be recognisable to
everyone at Aquinas. For my main image i used an eye
level close up, this would attract the reader as they are
looking directly at them, i have also used a student
from Aquinas so they will feel involved or read
because one of their friends is featured in the
magazine, But i think i could use a better image for the
front cover as the model used is not smiling, and
therefore not giving out a positive image for the
magazine.
Next time i may try out different colours
for the magazine background as it seems
a little bit empty/plain against the white
background. I chose the most exiting
extract from the magazine to feature on
the front page for the reader want to buy
and read on. I am happy with the way my
front cover turned out but i think i could
edit it to make various factors better.
52. My final magazine front
cover
I feel that my work had progressed massively
throughout this unit of work , and that my
Photoshop skills have improved hugely. As
before I knew the minimum amount about
photo shop, as I didn’t use it at all for my Aquinas
front cover but used it mostly on my final magazine
front cover .Now I can edit
a photo or text on there and feel
confident about it.
I have learnt about magazine conventions which
is reflected through my examples of my Aquinas
magazine and my final magazine as there is a huge difference
53. My image has not been edited on my
first front cover, and I only removed the
background and as you can see one
side of the models face is brighter than
the other, comparing it to my final
image on my final magazine you can
see that it is fully presentable and has
been edited in Photoshop and has a
bright well lit lights while I was taking
the photo.
The colour scheme linked to Aquinas
college colours. But my fist magazine
misses many conventions as the date is
in a random place not above the
barcode and the writing and pug looks
out of place.
54. I feel that this front cover is such an
improvement to my fist front page that I did. It
fits the genre and audience of young women
, and relates to the consumer.
The colour scheme links in with the audience as
purple is a famine colour and then black and
white go well together as it makes text easy to
read and stand out.
I feel my Photoshop skills helped and developed
as my main image looks professional and is
edited fully compared to my first image as it
hasn’t been edited atall.
55. My practice contents page
My first contents page uses
some conventions as showing
what's next time magazine and
it has a features list and a main
image. But it looks very plain
and not interesting to look at.
I used the conventional layout of
using columns.
I also used red and black white
background contrasting with the
Aquinas colours and they stand
out from each other.
I used dividers to make it easier
for the audience to guide them
through the page.
I used the bright red to create
focal pints and make the page
numbers stand out so the reader
could scan the page easily
57. Banner
This usually uses a unique selling point of the
magazine and as it is a banner it may be the first thing
the audience catch there eyes on. I chose festival
tickets as it is something my readers would want and
are interested in, I wouldn't chose something for
example and video game as my costumers would not
want it.I have used recurring explanation marks as it
brings excitement and draw attention to the banner
Bold main story
Used different font to master-head using the
magazines mostly used colour purple creating a
brand image and the text is much larger than other
surrounding it.
Highlighted Features
ensure that the text stands out
and is made obvious at a first
glance's have used band names
and well known festivals to
attract my target audience of
young women.
58. The masthead of my magazine is large front size and stands
out what is needed and is one of the conventions of
magazines. This is also the brand of my magazine. As you
can see on front covers 1 and 2 I have put the image in front
of my text, this is because I do not want over layering and it
is big and easy to read so the reader can still see the image
and make out the writing. Also Masthead always goes top
left because we read from top left as a culture. the main
heading is introducing my star and the person on the front
cover, as you can see I have picked billboard this is because
they are a similar music magazine, choosing chart music.ALL
of the front covers I have chosen have the largest text out of
the headings telling the reader who is the star and main
attraction of the magazine, this is a well known convention
of magazines. Cover star- My main image is of a teenage girl
in high street mainstream fashion, I chose this because it
reflects the reader. I would not put a male with a rock band t-
shirt on and dreadlocks because that would not appeal to my
particular audience. Codes and connotations can change
subtly depending on what the brand is trying to connote to
the audience. On the billboard magazines all have used the
similar connotation as all have a young women on the front.
In my image is used the rule of thirds, direct gaze and a mid
shot. I used these because for example direct gaze looks like
the star is looking directly at the reader making the
magazine more inviting and makes the reader feel special. If
you look at my examples all the front covers use this
convention.my secondary cover lines are smaller but you can
see them, all showing the reader what is inside the
magazine. I have used a banner at the bottom of my front
cover this draws the readers eye to it at the very end of
looking at the magazine.
59. Saying that there is festival tickets indie to be won, I
used festival tickets as it is something my audience
would want as it is a magazine. Because my
magazine features mainly pop music i would use
features that would go with my magazine like
interviews, chart music, bright colours, current
fashion used, current music, easy read test, give
always like festival tickets, direct address and keep
everything mainstream. I Have used a bar code at the
bottom left of the page what is a convention used in
magazine and put the date under the mast head and
put any contact details at the bottom left.my second
front cover featuring Lilly Allen also features contact
details at the bottom left .I Have kept to a
purple, white and black colour code. This counts as a
code as purple is a very feminine colour and bright so
the audience can tell it wouldn't be suitable for
boys/Men.I kept to a simple colours of 3 because this
is a convention as many magazines use 5 colours at
most, for example billboard use 4 colours that are
bright, also linking in with what pop music magazines
as i have said before. IAlso have a featuring column i
used this because it lets the reader know what type
of singers/bands they may listen to and if this is the
magazine for them. I Chose theses singers bands on
what my audience liked and wanted (Questionnaire)
60. Photography
The cover star’s eyes are central
giving eye contact to the
audience(direct gaze).I used this
to promote the magazine as
friendly and welcoming.
The photo has a white
background which creates
negative space and emphasises
the star and the text on the
cover.
I used Adobe Photoshop to
change the colour of the models
lips and teeth and I airbrushed
her face making her more
appealing.
61. Rule of thirds
In my three pictures below i have presented the rule of
thirds, this is making a 3x3 grid across the image. This
rule is used because the middle section of the grid
catches the audiences attention first before looking at
the whole image, the red stars on the first image
below show the mid section clearly. for example if you
are taking a picture of someone's face ( first image
below shows this ) you need to get the main features
of the face: eyes, nose, mouth ect in the middle
section of the 3x3 grid because that is the area where
the most features are and this is what you are aiming
for the audience to look at first.
in my second image i have used this rule again where
the eyes nose and mouth are all in the middle section
and the body is in the surrounding 8 sections around
the mid section.
my third image i used the rule by taking a photo of
Aquinas letters out side the building, the mid text 'uin'
is in the mid section and the top half of 'colle' is used
as this is the main feature of the image and you would
want people to look at this first.
62. Choosing a cover
photo...
This photo does not use
the rule of thirds and the
model looks confused
and in mid laugh.it also
has dim lighting.This is
why I didn’t think it was
appropriate or
professional to use it for
a college magazine
These photos booth use rule of thirds correctly and
both have direct gaze making a welcoming cover
for the target audience/.Both use young people as
that’s what they are targeted for
63.
For my contents page i used the same
colours as i did on the front cover, i also
used the same text as it was eye catching
enough and easy to read and looked
neat. I used characteristics of a normal
contents page such as a picture of the
next cover and a small summary of it, as
well as the normal features in every
magazine, and in this issue. The image
used was one from Leeds festival as i
called the copy the festival as most
people in college go to festivals or are
interested in going to one. I used the
arctic monkeys album cover of AM and a
quote from the main singer AlexTurner
as it is in the charts and is in one of the
top 5 albums, so many people will of
heard of them and most will like there
music.
64. I have used the Aquinas logo
at the top as well as the date
so people recognise that is
Aquinas magazine. For the
contents page text i used the
red as out of all the colours
it’s the colour that stands out
more, also below that i used
advertising for winning, this
is also in red as i wanted it to
be the second thing the
readers look at. It is also in
smaller text than the
'contents' so the readers read
that first. Everything i
wanted to stand out i used
red, other text used is in
black to contrast.
65. Technologies Used:
Altering and manipulating
photos
Adobe Photoshop
Digital Cameras
publisher
66. Final contents page
In my contents I used the
conventions popular
magazines. I have a main
image and a secondary image
and then a third image to help
divide the text up and make
the page more visually
appealing. I have used the
company's font and logo at the
top of the page making sure
that the brand is recognized. I
have kept to my colour scheme
of purple, white and black and
grey.
67. On my contents page for the masthead saying contents so the reader
knows exactly what the page includes, I also used the known font of the
brand of my magazine and have my magazine name on the side of the
masthead. This is a convention of magazines as if you look at my 3rd
example the use the billboard name on the side of there and my first
example has the same text used for the front cover masthead.
All of the contents pages use a star and one main image or 5 at most, I
have written a editors letter this is also a convention of magazines, if you
look at my second example of contents page you will se that they have
used a editors letter, magazines use this so the reader feels like they are
art of the magazine.
I have a what's in every week Column and what's in this weeks column
this is also a convention of magazines as all my examples show. After
each page number and heading I have a small paragraph giving
information about what is on that page this is also a convention used in
all my examples. I have also put all page numbers in order so it is easy to
read and find the page they want.
I have used a n editors letter to create a sense of belonging to the
magazine/a friendly image for the magazine. Also for the readers to know
a lot more about who writes the columns and what the issue includes.
68. DPS Image- I have my main cover star taking up nearly a
whole 1 page of my double page spread , this is a
convention as many magazines do it as you can see
from my examples. I Have used columns and a upper
case letter bigger than the rest what called a drop cap
that introduces the reader to the start of the interview. I
also have the page number so the reader knows what
page they are on, I Have a pull out quote that the
reader first will see and that will draw the reader in to
read the interview. This is also a convention.
The font I have used is the brands image, I have used
this font for the front cover and throughout the
magazine. This all creates a brand image and
something readers can identify when reading ‘Instant’
A clear convention I have also used is the columns I
have also divided the text by the question and answer.
As this will make it easy to read and will guide the
reader through the page.
69. CONCLUSION
