2. The troops of Meerut rode overnight to reach
Delhi in early hours of the next morning. The
troops stationed at Delhi under the British
also rebelled against their senior officers.
During such battles many ‘Firangis’ were
killed, ammunition and arms seized and
buildings set on fire. All the troops now
together went to the Red Fort, demanding to
meet the Emperor. They forced their way into
the palace and proclaimed Bahadur Shah
Zafar, the second as their leader. The emperor
also agreed to this demand of the rebellious
troops of the different British regiments.
5. Battle Between The ‘firangis’ and their
rebellious troops at The Kashmere Gate
6. The troops asked the emperor to send letters
to the various chiefs and rulers of the country
to form a confederacy in fighting against the
British. Several of such rulers agreed with
helping the Emperor because they thought
that if the emperor became the ruler of the
country, they could rule peacefully without
any interference from anyone. Thus this
blessing given by the Emperor to the Revolt
led to several complications for the British.
