I recently chatted with Katey, who has been at the forefront of the clean
beauty movement for over a decade, to share her five top tips for those that
want to go green.
1) Get The Most Out Of The Products You Have
Get the most of the products you already have by using a lip brush to get to
that hard to reach part of the lipstick. If your foundation gets too thick, mix
it with a moisturizer or facial oil and make yourself a tinted moisturizer. The
more you maximize what you have already purchased, the less excess
packaging is being created.
2) Use Products For Multiple Purposes
Invest in multi-functional items: smudge your favorite lipstick on your
fingers to double-up as blush or eyeshadow. Look for products that can serve
multiple purposes, such as RMS Lip2Cheek.
Get creative: instead of buying a new lip gloss, grab a favorite lipstick and
top it with a clear gloss for a fun new lip gloss color, or tap your favorite
lipstick onto your cheeks as a creamy cheek color.

3) Always Check The Labels
Avoid synthetic fragrances: if you see the words like “perfume”,
“parfum”, or “fragrance” you probably want to stay away. Instead, opt for

3. products that are fragrance-free or contain fragrances derived from essential
oils.
Say no to silicone: In general, whenever possible, avoid ingredients that
end in -cone or -siloxane in the ingredient list. Once silicone is made, it is
with us forever; nowadays there are many silicone alternatives.
Packaging matters: Look for products that are packaged in glass, metal,
or paperboard containers like Lip-to-Lid Balmie from Axiology or Aether
Beauty’s Rose Quartz Crystal Charged Cheek Palette. If the packaging is
made of plastic, make sure it’s plastic that’s been sourced from ocean-
dredging.
Check the Dirty List: Familiarize yourself with the “dirty list” of
ingredients to avoid! For example, most mainstream powders have talc
(which you should avoid), and most “creamy” mainstream lip products
contain petroleum (which comes from crude oil, a fossil fuel, and
nonrenewable resource). Note: that means you should stay away from major
lip balm brands and switch to an eco-friendly version!
4) Say No To Samples
Know that pieces of plastic smaller than a credit card don’t get recycled. Say
no to samples at the checkout to send a message to brands to not make
them.
5) Find Clean Swaps For Your Favorite Products
The clean beauty world now has a wide variety of products with natural
botanical ingredients, allowing you to easily find a clean swap for your
favorite product once it runs out. Several clean beauty brands offer a one-
on-0ne virtual consultation where you can share pictures of the products
you use and they will recommend your “clean swap”.
