‘A Fortune Teller is an old folding game with traditions that date back to the
Japanese historical techniques of origami from the 16oo’s, where the folds of
paper are used in a fun way to predict events in the future.
Obviously the fortune teller is spread all over the world.
Another name for it is a cootie catcher. In Germany the figure is called
Himmel und Hölle (Heaven and Hell). Nasenkneifer (nose pincher),
Pfeffer und Salz (pepper and salt) or
Salznäpfchen (salt pot). ’
Devised, Choreographed and Directed by:
Ms. Kate Jackson, Mrs Andrea Morrison and Miss Anna Southward.
Guest Artist: Kate Jackson BA (Hons.) MA.
Stonyhurst students have been exceptionately fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with professional
dancer and choreographer ‘Kate Jackson’ who is a founding member of The Core, sponsored by Arts Council
England and Northern School of Contemporary Dance, where she was artist in residence.
Her dance credits include: Faust (Michael Keegan Dolan, Royal Opera House), Aida (Finn Walker, Royal Opera
House); La Nuit Intime, MAEternal, Designer Body (balletLORENT); Amazing Kate, Back on Track (Frauke
Requart); Electric Hotel (Requart and Rosenberg); Chodzenie, Dual, Roamer, Stray Dogs (Tom Dale); La
Sardina, Nightmares in Black and Green, Beyond the Seve Seas (Maresa von Stockert); Pictures from an
Exhibition (Daniel Krammer, Sadlers Wells Productions); Plastic (30 Bird Productions); 16 revolutions
(Troika Ranch); Import Export (Steve Wright, Clod Ensemble); The Deep, Methods and Madness, Two Men and
A Michael (Gary Clarke). Music video credits include Crazy Beat by Blur (Carol Brown). Film credits include:
World War Z (Paramount Pictures).
As part of a four series workshop with Kate, students from the age of 11yrs –to- 18yrs have explored
contemporary dance in a technical and creative pursuit to organically develop a piece to perform at
‘Great Academies’. With inspiration from vintage fashion, flamenco rhythms and a starting theme of moving
through space in shapes of infinity, the whole development process is beautifully mesmerising. A complete
organic development of movement framed in the fun games of ‘paper fortune telling ‘ core to many of our
childhood hopes and dreams.
