Google acquires Ukrainian mobile facial recognition startup Viewdle for $30-45 million
1. Google acquires Ukrainian mobile facial recognition
startup Viewdle for $30-45 million
Google last month reportedly acquired Ukrainian startup Viewdle, after talks ended successfully
a week ago. The Viewdle board apparently approved a takeover bid by Google on the night of
September 24, but the deal has yet to be publicly announced. The startup will be telling its
employees tomorrow, according to a Forbes report that calls the acquisition the biggest deal in
Ukrainian Internet history.
Since details of the acquisition have not been disclosed, it’s unclear how much Google paid for
Viewdle. A source familiar with the negotiations quoted by Forbes said the sum is comparable to
what the search giant paid for other companies, and that Viewdle staff got a larger sum than
they expected. The estimate is therefore between $30 million (the minimum Viewdle was hoping
to get), $38 million (what Google paid for the PittPatt in 2011), and $45 million (what Google
paid for Neven Vision in 2006).
In June 2011, we wrote about Viewdle’s Android game Third Eye, which brought facial
recognition to the mobile gaming world. Two years ago, Viewdle raised $10 million in funding.
