8. BSM Preamble “We, the members of the Black Student Movement, embrace a culture distinct from the dominant culture found at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In view of this fact, it is the goal of this organization to strive for the continued existence of the unity among all its members, to voice the concerns and grievances of its members to the University, to offer outlets for expressing Black ideals and culture, and finally, to ensure that the Black Student Movement members never lose contact with the Black community.”

10. Black History Month Dedicated to representing and embracing African American heritage, culture, and values not only in February but throughout the entire year. We host various events such as comedy nights, poetry readings, presenting black films, and participating in community service projects within the black community. We also hold an annual Black History Month Banquet in honor of all the African American faculty and staff members at the University. BSM Alternative Spring Break Trip A special project whose mission is to foster self-confidence and self-understanding in K-12 youth living in rural America through critical discussion regarding current social issues and physical, mental and sexual health issues. We have successfully conducted two consecutive “Self and Health” camps for students living in the culturally rich towns of Sunflower County and Clarksdale, Mississippi at the Sunflower Freedom Project Center. 15. Celebration of Black Womanhood (CBW) Our purpose is to honor the strength, diversity and essence of the black woman through an appreciation and celebration of her heritage and culture. 20. Triple Alliance Council (TAC) Triple Alliance is the service committee of the Black Student Movement. The “triple alliance” consists of the students at UNC, the campus administration, and the Chapel Hill community. The committee organizes programs that are used to bring the three entities together. Throughout the year, FCC members plan events like socials, cookouts and parties to help unite first-year students. 41. BSM FACTS Q: Why does BSM usually meet in Upendo? A: Upendo was once a room in the old Chase Dining Hall and was known as the Black Student Union. The first classes of African American students were required to live in Hinton James and Upendo was a meeting place, lounge, recreation center, and dance hall for them.
42. Ebony Readers/Onyx Theatre (EROT) Aperformance subgroup that specializes in poetry, spoken word, and theatrical drama. EWrite is the writing core of EROT and produces the scripts for the two annual theatrical performances.
