PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
Personal protective equipment, commonly referred to as "PPE", is equipment worn to minimize exposure to serious
workplace injuries and illnesses. These injuries and illnesses may result from contact with chemical, radiological,
physical, electrical, mechanical, or other workplace hazards. Personal protective equipment may include items such
as gloves, safety glasses and shoes, earplugs or muffs, hard hats, respirators, or coveralls, vests and full body suits.
What can be done to ensure proper use of personal protective equipment?
All personal protective equipment should be of safe design and construction, and should be maintained in a clean
and reliable fashion. It should fit well and be comfortable to wear, encouraging worker use. If the personal protective
equipment does not fit properly, it can make the difference between being safely covered or dangerously exposed.
When engineering, work practice, and administrative controls are not feasible or do not provide sufficient protection,
employers must provide personal protective equipment to their workers and ensure its proper use. Employers are
also required to train each worker required to use personal protective equipment to know:
When it is necessary
What kind is necessary
How to properly put it on, adjust, wear and take it off
The limitations of the equipment
Proper care, maintenance, useful life, and disposal of the equipment
If PPE is to be used, a PPE program should be implemented. This program should address the hazards present; the
selection, maintenance, and use of PPE; the training of employees; and monitoring of the program to ensure its
ongoing effectiveness.
Personal protective equipment is addressed in OSHA standards for Construction, General Industry, Shipyard
Employment,Marine Terminals, and Longshoring. OSHA requires that many categories of personal protective
equipment meet or be equivalent to standards developed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
8. 7. Now, answer the following questions:
a. What´s the most important part of the reading?
The OSHA is the entity charge of finding the hazards and implement the PPE
chords and verifying the use correctly
b. Why is important to know and learn about “PPE”?
Because so we ensure the correct use
c. What protective equipment do you know?
such as gloves, safety glasses and shoes, earplugs or muffs, hard hats,
respirators, or coveralls, vests and full body suits.
d. In your work there are some rules of protection? Tell us what are they?
Yes, walk for the zebra , respect signals of hazards. etc

13. MAINTENANCE HISTORY
The word “maintenance” is used to describe maintenance techniques used to
ensure proper and continuous use of equipment, machinery, facilities and
services. For primitive man, the fact sharpening tools and weapons, sewing and
mending skins shops and clothes, take care of the sealing of their canoes, etc.
During the industrial revolution was corrective maintenance (emergency),
accidents and losses caused the first boiler and the urgent intervention of insurers demanding more and better care,
provided the appearance of garages.
From 1925, it is evident in American industry the need to organize the maintenance on a scientific basis. You start
thinking about whether to repair before the wear or breakage occurs, to avoid interruptions in the production process,
so that the concept of preventive maintenance arises.
From the sixties, with the development of electronics, space and aviation industries, predictive maintenance on the
Anglo-Saxon world, for which the intervention no longer depends uptime but effective state or condition of the
equipment or it’s certain elements and system reliability.
Maintenance currently facing what could be called its third generation, with the availability of electronic equipment for
inspection and control, extremely reliable, to know the real condition of the equipment through periodic or continuous
measurements of certain parameters: vibration, noise, temperatures, physicochemical analysis tecnografíque,
ultrasound, endoscopy, etc., and application to maintaining information systems based computers that allow the
accumulation of empirical experience and development of data processing systems. This development will lead in the
future to maintain the use of expert systems and artificial intelligence, with wide field of action in the diagnosis of oats
and facilitate maintenance work in difficult conditions.
Moreover, there are changes in maintenance policies set by the legislation on Safety and Health at Work and the
pressures of the Environment, as scavengers devices, extraction plants, and elements for limiting noise attenuation
and equipment detection, control and alarm. It predicts that maintenance costs will suffer a progressive increase, this
leads to making products more reliable and easy to maintain.
14. 12. Based on the reading, answer the following questions:
a. What´s the meaning of maintenance for you?
Conservation of thing in good condition or in a certain situation to
avoid its degradation
b. What have been the biggest changes in the maintenance area?
There is now the availability of elecgtronic inspection and control
equipment

the text “Maintenance history”

what do you know about Safety maintenance and types? Then, share your
opinions with your classmates.
Maintenance of a machine to maintain its good condition and performance, there are different types
of maintenance such as the preventive that consists of reducing repair through a review of periodic
inspections, predictive based on predicting the failure before this it is produced.

17. GLOSSARY
Safety spectacles. These protective eyeglasses have safety frames constructed of metal or
plastic and impact-resistant lenses. Side shields are available on some models.
Goggles. These are tight-fitting eye protection that completely cover the eyes, eye sockets and
the facial area immediately surrounding the eyes and provide protection from impact, dust and
splashes. Some goggles will fit over corrective lenses.
Welding shields. Constructed of vulcanized fiber or fiberglass and fitted with a filtered lens,
welding shields protect eyes from burns caused by infrared or intense radiant light; they also
protect both the eyes and face from flying sparks, metal spatter and slag chips produced during
welding, brazing, soldering and cutting operations. OSHA requires filter lenses to have a shade
number appropriate to protect against the specific hazards of the work being performed in order
to protect against harmful light radiation.
Laser safety goggles. These specialty goggles protect against intense concentrations of light
produced by lasers. The type of laser safety goggles an employer chooses will depend upon the
equipment and operating conditions in the workplace.
Face shields. These transparent sheets of plastic extend from the eyebrows to below the chin
and across the entire width of the employee's head. Some are polarized for glare protection.
Face shields protect against nuisance dusts and potential splashes or sprays of hazardous liquids
but will not provide adequate protection against impact hazards. Face shields used in
combination with goggles or safety spectacles will provide additional protection against impact
hazards.
