WHAT IS POLLUTION?
 This is an undesirable change in the
 characteristics physical, chemical or
biological of air, water or soil which may
adversely affect the health, survival of man
 and other living organisms.
WHAT IS A POLLUTANT?
 It is a substance or energy present in a concentration
greater than the natural as a result of human activity
that has detrimental effect on the environment.

 The majority of pollutants are chemical substances :
    solid, liquid and gaseous
TYPES OF POLLUTANTS
 BY NATURE:
• Physical contaminants (radiation, noise and heat)

• Chemical contaminants (VOCs)

• Biological contaminants (the majority are microorganisms)

 BY DEGRADATION:

• Degradable Pollutants: (Substances that can be degraded by
  microorganisms).

• Nondegradable Pollutants
 BY PROVENANCE:

 Primary pollutants

 secondary pollutants
SOURCES OF POLLUTION
 Naturals

 Anthropogenics
• Point Sources

• Nonpoint source
TYPES OF POLLUTION
 WATER POLLUTION
 AIR POLLUTION

 SOIL POLLUTION

 NOISE POLLUTION

 RADIOACTIVE POLLUTION

 THERMAL POLLUTION

 LIGHT POLLUTION

 VISUAL POLLUTION
EFFECTS OF POLLUTION:
 Damage to human health
 Damage to the plant and animal life

 Aches and deterioration

 Damage to property
