1. After the mountains, we came to Santa Clara. The adopted city of Che Guevara who led the rebel forces who captured the city. There is an incredible monument and museum to Che and others who died in Bolivia in 1967. Che had also fought in Zaire briefly in 1965. Like many other monuments in Cuba, it comes with a plaza perfect for those long political speeches by Castro.
2. In 1958, as Castro’s rebels continued to capture more cities and move west, Batista sent a armored train full of his best forces to Santa Clara where Che Guevara commanded some troops. On December 28 th , Che’s men derailed the train carrying Batista’s elite troops and after a battle, they captured the city of Santa Clara on December 29 th .
3. At that time, Santa Clara became the largest city that Castro’s forces had captured. Two days later, on December 31 st , dictator Batista fled Havana. The battle for Santa Clara was the decisive battle of the revolution and Santa Clara became Che’s adopted city. The place where the train was derailed and the battle took place is now a museum.
4. We returned to Havana for one last day, and loitered around the city. We took in the Prado, an area where artists gather to display and sell their art.
5. We finished our last evening in Havana at the El Morro castle. It was built by the Spanish to defend Havana and overlooks the entrance to the harbor from which we were able to get some great views of the sunset over the city. The cannons in the castle overlook the bay…but somehow the British managed to sail in and capture the harbor on at least one occasion. It was a great end to a wonderful trip.
