Monitoring and predicting
volcano eruptions
LO – To understand if volcanic
eruptions can be predicted and
how volcanoes are monitored.
Volcano Monitoring
• Electronic Tiltmeters can be placed on the side
of the volcano and measure very small
movements in its shape due to magma rising
beneath the surface.
• Satellites can also detect movement of just
1mm.
• Volcano Spiders can monitor inside a volcano
and send data back to a central base.
• All these methods can help monitor the start of
the volcano and are often done by one
organisation (e.g. Montserrat volcano
observatory)
Pablo (Philippines) ;
HELP! I’m v worried that
the volcano is going 2
blow its top! How can I tell
if it is going 2 erupt or
not??
Me;
I’m not 2 sure … I’ll
investigate nw, I’m in my
Geog lesson!
Pablo;
Quick … its getting v bg!
• You need to
research to see how
Pablo can tell if the
volcano is going to
blow its top.
• Investigate how
eruptions can be
predicted (p20 &
hand-out)
• Write a text
message once you
have found the
things that he
should look for.
