Like many youngsters born in post-war Germany, Klaus Meine andRudolf Schenker were influenced bythe music and other delightsimported into their homeland by ElvisPresley: chewing gum, blue jeans andleather jackets, but most of allrock’n’roll. From an early age both ofthem had an irresistible talent forplaying the guitar and step into thelimelight. In 1965 Rudolf Schenkerstarted up the Scorpions in Hanover.
Rudolf Schenker and KlausMeine teamed up to form asongwriting duo, so they laidthe foundations for aspectacular success story. In1972 the Scorpions releasedtheir remarkable debutalbum, “Lonesome Crow”.
The distinctive Scorpions style came from thecombination of two electric guitars, a fusion offabulously forceful power riffs with dazzlingguitar solos. Also Klaus Meine’s voice was veryrecognizable with his highly expressive andpolished delivery.
The Scorpions were unique on the Germanrock scene of the period. Because, right fromthe start, the band was aiming for the verytop of the international hard rock business.Another important thing is that Klaus Meinewrote all his lyrics in English.
In august 1989, encouraged by the success of theScorpions’1988 Leningrad concert, Russiangovernment gave permission for the legendaryMoscow Music Peace Festival. Here theScorpions shared the stage with otherinternational hard rock acts such as Bon Jovi,Cinderella, Ozzy Osbourne and the Russianband Gorky Park. They played to hundreds ofthousands Soviet rock fans in Moscow’s LeninStadium.
In september 1989Klaus Meine drewon his impressionsof the MoscowMusic PeaceFestival to createthe Scorpions’smash hit “Wind ofChange”.
