3. Vietnamese History
Today we will talk about Vietnamese
History.
Before we start, does anyone know what
history means?
4. History
History is the study of the past.
History tells us what happened in the
world before we were here.
Why is history important?
5. Vietnamese History
Vietnamese history goes back as far as
20,000 years ago!
We can’t learn about 20,000
years of history so we will
start at about 2,000 years ago.
6. Chinese
About 2000 years ago, the Chinese ruled
Vietnam.
This means that the Chinese had control
over Vietnam.
The Chinese ruled in Vietnam until the
year 938 AD, about 1000 years.
1000 years is a very long time. As a result
there was mixing between Vietnamese
and Chinese Culture.
7. Language Similarities
The Chinese and Vietnamese languages have
similarities.
Some people have said the 25% of
Vietnamese words come from Chinese words!
The Vietnamese used to use Chinese writing
symbols (han-ja) for their own language.
8. Religious Similarities
There are religious similarities.
Many people in Vietnam and China are
Buddhist.
There are many temples in each country!
10. Holidays
In Vietnam people have a holiday to
celebrate the New Year. What is it called?
TET Holiday is about 2 weeks long.
People make beautiful flower decorations
and have big firework shows!
Chinese New Year is at the same time as
TET holiday. The Chinese people also
make beautiful flower decorations and
have big firework shows.
14. Battle of Bach Dung
In the year 938, the Vietnamese fought
the Chinese in a battle.
The Vietnamese defeated the Chinese in
the famous Battle of Bach Dang.
In the battle, the leader of Vietnam was a
man named Ngo Quyen.
This means that Vietnam was free from
the Chinese.

The battle took place on a river near Halong
Bay.

Our story now takes us all the way to the year
1651!
Do you remember we talked about
Vietnamese language? What did people in
Vietnamese use to write with?
Until 1651, people in Vietnam used Chinese
letters to write. These letters were very difficult
to understand though.
17. Vietnamese Alphabet
In 1651, Alexandre de Rhodes develops the
modern Vietnamese Alphabet.
Alexandre de Rhodes made the alphabet that
people still use today!
This alphabet is much easier than the Chinese
alphabet so many more people can read!
Can anyone in our class read this alphabet?
18. French Indo-China
In 1887, French Indo-China was formed.
Formed means created or made.
French-Indo China included Vietnam,
Cambodia and Laos.
What does this really mean?
This means that France ruled Vietnam.
Do think that Vietnamese people liked
this?

Again, we can see the mixing of cultures.
Because of French Indochina, we can see
many French buildings in Vietnam,
Cambodia and Laos.

hard for Vietnamese people.
Vietnamese people were forced to work very
hard and for very little money.
We should remember that it isn’t right for one
country to rule another country. Every country
should be free.
