A-2 Character Change

I am here to tell a story. A story about a once strong man who ended up
begging to be killed. This man is Chlomo Wiesel, the father of Elie Wiesel.
Chlomo was a religious man who took great part in the community of the small
town of Sighet. Chlomo was a hardworking man who would do anything to
protect his family. This would all change after the Jews were shipped to
Auschwitz. Elie was determined to stay with his dad. Chlomo and Elie were told
to lie about their ages so that they could stay together and keep out of the
crematory. Chlomo at first seemed to be handling the change well, but later on
old age seemed to be catching up. Chlomo began to grow weak from saving
some of his food. He was beginning to get skinny and had trouble keeping up
sometimes. This was going to be a problem during selection. Chlomo had to try
his best to run and look healthy, but it was easy to tell that he was getting
weak. He had a high chance of being selected for the crematory. Chlomo still
cared more about his family than anything else at the moment. Chlomo ended
up passing the selection and was not sent to the crematory. He began to get so
weak though that he had trouble doing his jobs and he would be hit by the SS
and workers for not being able to keep up. Elie could do nothing but watch this
abuse. Elie sensed the weakness and began to worry about his dad even though
there was almost nothing that Elie could have done about it. Elie sometimes
gave his dad some of his ration to keep him up. Chlomo was still getting worse
though. When the time came to march from Auschwitz due to the advancing
allies, Chlomo and Elie would be put to their biggest test yet. Chlomo had
weakened to the point of having trouble walking, but Elie stayed with him to
keep him alive. When the prisoners were allowed to take a break from the
marching, Elie was beginning to fall asleep. His dad was supposed to wake him
up later so that Elie could make sure that they did not get left behind in the
snow. To Elie’s horror, his dad was also falling asleep due to being tired and
weak. Elie had to try and keep his dad up even though his dad only wanted to
rest. At the next camp, Chlomo was so weak that he didn’t want to get off of
his bed. All he wanted to do was rest since he was in so much pain. Elie had to
keep his dad up and made sure that he did not leave him behind. Later, the
prisoners were moved again on a train to another camp since the Allies were
advancing even further into the area. On the train, many people died and many
more became sick. The people would throw themselves upon any food that
entered the train. Chlomo cared no more about what was going to happen. He
was a wreck and could not be convinced to do anything. When throwing out the
dead bodies, Chlomo was almost thrown out because he looked dead. At
thenext camp, Chlomo stayed in bed all day and was continually robbed of his
food. He just wanted to die at this time. Soon before the camp was liberated,
Chlomo was taken off to the crematory while Elie was away. There was no more
strength in Chlomo to hold on.
