Why this report
• Today’s power semiconductor industry uses Silicon and has been waiting for compound materials
for 10 years
• Silicon can still be improved and this is what has been done with the super junction structure, which
was released 10 years ago and is catching more and more shares of the market
• Cost remains the main driver and highest performance technology will be widely used only at a
reasonable cost
• Regulations (as EnergyStar) push for better efficiency, therefore fewer losses, and the industry can
only integrate available technologies. SJ MOSFET is one of these available technologies, whereas
compound semiconductor are not at mass production
• Several new players entered SJ MOS market within the last 36 months. It is a business with around
15 players, and two of them totalize around 85% of the market
• We have also seen new business models emerge, and unexpected players entering the game
• SJ technology is reaching higher voltages, and is trying to become a very high voltage technology
Super junction MOSFET is a subject as tremendous as SiC and GaN. It is part of the power
semiconductor picture for the next ten years. It is to become a standard and to replace planar
MOSFET in the future, and to be a perfect interim solution, before GaN’s availability.
The objective of this report is to clarify this situation and start thinking about the future market
evolution when we include SJ MOS as a challenger in a more and more competitive power
semiconductor devices market

SJ MOS device market growth will stay between xx% and xx% until 2018. The recent power devices market instability
(2011 huge growth followed by 2012 dropping) had a very light impact on SJ MOSFET sales. The shortage in place
probably had buffered the demand decrease, added to the fact that SJ MOSFET trend is much better than other
Silicon technologies. It is one of the youngest Silicon technology in place (1998).
