2. Historians differs that the Islamic traditions were started in India at the end of the 6th
century A.D. or with Mohammed Ghori 12th century A.D.
A new style of architecture was flourished; called the Indo-Islamic architecture:
amalgamation of Islamic and Hindu Style.
As per Islamic philosophy, the worship is performed as congregational prayer in mosques
and construction of tomb was followed for burial purpose; the fort and palaces were also
part of this style of architecture.

3. Islamic Philosophy and Rituals
Form of worship is congregational prayer in Mosque.
a) It requires a spacious courtyard with a large prayer hall.
b) It pointed towards Mecca, that is, to the West of India.
Its main entrance to the east.
At the centre of rear wall a recess or alcove called mihrab indicating the direction of prayer
(quibla).
A pulpit called mimber at its right is for imam who leads the prayer.
A tower or minaret intended for muazzin to call, later became architectural character.
A water tank is provided for ablutions in the courtyard.
Its sides are enclosed by cloisters called liwans.

The practice of the burial of the dead is in
chamber called Tomb.
A mihrab is in the western wall and the real grave
(qabr) is in an underground chamber.
More complex tombs contains a mosque & well
planned garden.
Style of construction is based on arches, vaults
and domes.
Decoration and ornamentation forms an essential
part. Ornamentation is done through depicting
arabesque or geometrics, calligraphies, floral
patterns, painting, glass-mosaic, glazed tiling,
inlay work.
5. Building Types
Architecture in India is represented by following types of buildings by their use:
a. Secular architecture- Humayun’s Tomb
b. Religious Architecture- Jama Mosque
c. Military Architecture- Agra Fort
d. Recreational Architecture- Jodh Bai’s Palace
6. Secular architecture:
Homes, cities, forts, palaces, schools, universities, hospitals, man made reservoirs,
step wells, resting place for travelers etc. are prime examples of secular
architecture. Monuments such as ceremonial gateways, carved edicts, victory pillars
and towers are also examples of secular architecture.
Those were constructed to fulfill the need of local rulers for their comfort and to
show of power like palaces, harem, ministerial quarters, stables.

7. Religious Architecture
The history of architecture is concerned more with religious buildings than with any
other type, because in most past cultures the universal and exalted appeal of religion
made the church or temple the most expressive, the most permanent, and the most
influential building in any community.
In Religious Architecture, It may be discussed by three types:
1. Mosque
2. Tomb
3. Eidgaah
9. The word masjid means a place of worship which is mosque in English.
Masjid jami is a congregational mosque dedicated to Friday prayers.
The following mosques built during the early period of Islam.

10. TOMB
Monumental structures over graves of rulers and royalty was a popular feature of medieval
India.
Some well-known examples of such tombs are those of Ghyasuddin Tughlaq, Humayun, Akbar
and Itmaduddaula in Agra.
The idea behind the tomb was eternal paradise.
The tomb was placed within paradisiacal elements such as a garden or near a body of water or
both, as is in the case of the Humayun’s tomb and the Taj Mahal, which follows the charbagh
style.
The structures could not have been intended only to signify peace and happiness in the next
world but to also showcase the majesty, grandeur and might of the person buried there.
14. Military Architecture
These were developed by the rulers for security or military purposes For example, forts,
watchtowers, gateways etc.
FORT
Building monumental forts with embattlements was a regular feature in medieval times.
Some examples of the forts are-
a. Red Fort, Agra
b. Red Fort, Delhi
े
क
17. Recreational Architecture
Those arose out of interest of the rulers in art, games etc. It was purely created for pleasure
seeking or for the leisure of the rulers. For example gardens, pavilions etc.
18. Gardens
Mughal Gardens in Srinagar built during the reign on Mughal Emperors.
They were Influenced by concept of Persian Gardens or Chahar or Charbagh style.
The common features that all Gardens are designed in a rectilinear layouts within the
walled structure with canals, fountains, pools of running water and several species of
shade providing trees , flowers, fruits and aromatic grasses.
Some examples of these are-
1. Shalimar bagh, Kashmir
2. Nishat Bagh, Kashmir

21. The essential parts of a typical congregational mosque are as
follows:
1. LIWAN (PRAYER-HALL)
2. RIWAQ (CLOISTERS)
3. SAHN (COURTYARD)
4. HAUZ (TANK)
5. MIHRAB (PRAYER NICHE)
6. MIMBAR (PULPIT)
7. MINAR (MINARET)
22.
23. LIWAN, SAHN and HAUZ
Example - Sahn and Hauz in Jama Masjid, Delhi
The mosque should hold the entire male population of a city/town.
Women are welcome to attend Friday prayers, but not required to do so.
So the congregational mosques must have a large prayer hall which is called Liwan.
Generally this is adjoined to an open courtyard, called a Sahn.
Within the courtyard often there is a water tank, that is Hauz.
It is a welcome respite in hot lands and used for the ablutions done before prayer.
24. RIWAQ

25. MIHRAB
Mihrab means a niche in the wall of mosque that indicates the
“Qibla” i.e., the dierction that muslims should face while praying.
Mihrab is a semi-circular recess in plan and having a semi-
circular arch on the top.
One of the characteristics of Indo-Muslim architecture was to
place three or more mihrab in the Kibla wall.
The mihrab made up of three basic elements :
1. An arch,
2. The support columns and capital,
3. The space between They are ornately decorated with Quranic
verses.
27. MIMBER
The Arabic word Mimbar means elevated stand.
It is located to the right of the Mihrab.
Mimber is a point in the mosque from where the Imam
(leader of Prayer) delivers the sermons (Khuthbah)
especially on Friday and Eid days.
It is often richly ornamented, though in the simplest
form the mimbar is just a small platform with only
three steps.

28. MINAR and ENTRY GATE
In such buildings, the attempt was that
the entry should be more striking in
appearance compared to others around.
The retreat in the doorway of the
mosques invites people in and welcomes
them.
Minaret or Minar means the place of
light.
It is placed close to mosques.
The entry and the finials were one of the
distinct and essential visual elements.

29. Architectural Elements of Islamic Architecture
Creating any structures, whether it is a religious or non- religious, requires certain
knowledge of sciences like geometry, mathematics and design principles and over
the centuries taking advantage of these sciences, craftsmen have been able to create
masterpieces of art and architecture throughout the world.
This was also true in Islamic structures. Self-transition and Islamic philosophies
have led to formation of special architectural and design patterns.
Islamic architecture focuses architectural elements, decoration, spiritual foundations,
and construction materials.
Each part of the Islamic Architectural elements has a separate segmentation.

31. SQUINCH
A squinch is a wedge that fits on the top corners of a
square space.
At the point where the dome's bottom edge meets the
room's upper horizontal edges, four triangular like
wedges are placed in the corners.
The four squinches turn the square into an octagon,
which enables a dome to rest on top of it.

36. DOMES
Dome in Islamic architecture was
subsequently adopted in almost on every
mosque and tomb structure found in
Persia, central Asia as well as in India
also.
Dome shows the supremacy of the
Almighty, particularly in the case of the
mosque and a tomb.
They are often decorated on the outside
and inside with beautiful tiles in geometric
designs.

38. Different types of Arches
ARCH
The most important form of opening
was the pointed arches which is
principally two and four centered
arches.
In later stages different forms of
arches came into existence like,
pointed, cusped, foliated & ogee.
Arches and spandrel

42. LANDSCAPE
Landscape Design done by the rulers laid out in various places is an important aspect of
Islamic architecture.
For example, Babur, the founder of the Mughal dynasty, commemorated his victory over
Ibrahim Lodi in 1526 not with a triumphal monument but with a large garden called Kabul
Bagh at Panipat.
The idea of these retreats was brought in from Persia.
Spacious gardens not associated with buildings were also created, especially the gardens of
Kashmir, of which the Shalimar and Nishat Baghs are the most famous.

44. Generally, the layout is rigidly conventional and axially symmetrical.
The plan of the Mughal gardens is worked out in a regular arrangement of squares, often
subdivided into smaller squares to form the figure of the char bagh.
Fountains, pools, basins, cascades and similar devices turn the whole into a very effective
water garden.
Paved pathways and water channels follow the shapes of these squares.
The water supply required to maintain such gardens was often brought in from distant

45. SYMMETRY

Symmetry itself consists of two types: vertical and horizontal.
In vertical symmetry the image of the building was created so using the waterfront, and in
horizontal symmetry wall opposite to each other are identical.
The Islamic building which clearly represent symmetry is Taj-Mahal.
