6. Introduction to
Tongue Diagnosis
Looking at the tongue as a diagnostic method can
be understood as a method of looking at the Zang
Fu organs.
Considering it´s rich contents, tongue diagnosis
covers plenty of special knowledge which was
transferred from ancient times.
Tongue diagnosis is primarily done by observing the
tongue conditions, it´s body and tongue coating.
7. The relation
between Zang-Fu
organs, channels
and collaterals
The tongue is related with the internal
organs through the channels and
collaterals.
According to the Nei Jing, Zang-Fu
organs such as the heart, the liver, the
spleen, the kidney, the bladder, the triple
energizer and the stomach connect
directly with the tongue through their
belonging channels and collaterals.
8. In the light of the bio-holographic law,
any local part of the body is actually a
scaled-down version of the whole, and
the tongue is no exception, so there is a
saying indicating that the part of the
tongue proper represents that of the
whole body. The basic rule goes that the
upper part of the tongue represents the
upper part of the body, and so does the
middle part and the lower part. The
specific three division are as below.

上 upper part

9. Looking at the
tongue body
Red tongue: The tongue is redder than
normal or even brightly red. Red
tongue whose vessels are full of blood is
caused by heat which speeds up the
circulation of Qi and blood, always a
sign of heat. It indicates excess
syndrome or heat syndrome due to Yin
deficiency.
10. Tooth-marked tongue: It is a
tongue with dental indentation
on its edge. Tooth-marked
tongue is often seen in cases with
deficiency in the spleen and
internal accumulation of
excessive dampness, which make
the tongue to be enlarges and
pressed by the teeth. So in most
cases the tooth-marked tongue
appears along with the enlarged
tongue, indicating spleen
deficiency or excessive dampness.
