Masque Of The Red Death
"The Masque of the Red Death" Throughout the poem "The Masque of the Red Death" Edgar Allan Poe uses various sentence structure to draw in
the reader through emotion. Poe selects his word choice very carefully. He uses words that are not too big but they still give a very deep meaning.
Literary devices are just as important to the poem. These devices help readers convey the theme of this poem, which is no matter how wealthy or
powerful one is, one can never escape death. Edgar Allan Poe uses numerous sentence structures to connect the reader into the poem. An example of a
piece of sentence structure he uses is straight and concise. This displays straight forward language that can be easily identified, and is also very short
and brief. The

The Masque Of The Red Death Essay
From the day we are all born, we have an appointment with death. The truth is that people in society try to have the most fun in their lives by
indulging themselves in food, dancing, and partying. Although all of these things are pleasant and enjoyable, people still cannot escape their death.
Many try to pass time and live for themselves, when in reality they come closer and closer to their demise. No one better portrays this than Edgar
Allen Poe, who in his short story, "The Masque of the Red Death," Poe shows that there is no artifice that can prevent the inevitability of fate when a
rich nobleman named Prince Prospero throws a party in his luxurious castle, hoping the Red Death will not affect him.
The character Prince Prospero in Poe's "The Masque of Red Death," had the notion that if he were to throw a magnificent party, inviting his careless
friends, while being locked in his extravagant castle, that the Red Death would not be able to reach him. "But the Prince Prospero was happy and
dauntless and sagacious...this wall had gates of iron...it was folly to grieve, or to think (456)." Prospero truly does think that the castle, with its gates

And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all (461)." All people in Poe's story die, and in reality every human
being meets with death and decay. The wealthy had suffered the same fate as the poor, even though they had many more possessions and a greater
social status than the peasants. Poe goes to symbolize the Red Death as an appointment and a fate that eventually all people in the world must come
to face. For some people, such as the ones in "The Masque of the Red Death", choose to indulge themselves in pleasure, helplessly awaiting the fate
that has been set for them from the day of

What Is The Tone In The Masque Of The Red Death
"Masque of the Red Death" by Edgar Allen Poe is about when a plague strikes a kingdom somewhere in Europe. The Prince decides that he can
protect himself from this plague by securing himself in his castle. He believes that the plague won't harm him and that he can defeat death. But he is
not so fortunate at the end of the story. The three literary devices that will be discussed are the symbol, tone, and theme. The Tone of "Masque of the
Red Death" is more of a darker atmosphere. At the beginning of the story, the author starts off like this" The Red Death" "had long devastated the
country. No pestilence had ever been so fatal, or so hideous. Blood was it is Avatar and its seal–– the redness and the horror of blood."(389). As you can

Starting off for the first symbol is "The Red Death" is symbolizing the plague and disease that is taking place in the Kingdom. In the story " The
Red Death" shows up the masquerade ball grabbing everybody's attention. Poe tells us " and now was acknowledged the presence of the Red
Death. He had come like a thief in the night."(394). No one would expect the Red Death to come in especially the prince. Who thought that he
would be safe in his big castle. The prince sends his guards to run after the stranger, but the stranger gets away. The Prince gets away and the
stranger leads him to the seventh room which is the next symbol. The prince follows the stranger into this room and the reason it symbolizes death
because this is where he dies. Poe describes this room as "The seventh apartment was closely shrouded in black velvet tapestries that hung all over the
ceiling and down the walls, falling in heavy folds upon a carpet of the same material and hue. But in this chamber only, the color of the windows failed
to correspond with the decorations. The panes here were scarlet ––a deep blood color." (393). So even though the prince was all–powerful he still

Essay On The Masque Of The Red Death
The story that will haunt me the most out of Poe's most famous stories is definitely "The Masque of the Red Death." This story will haunt me for
years to come because of the symbols, imagery, unreliable characters, setting and more. This story is also very memorable because it is different from
Poe's other stories including, "The Tell–Tale Heart" and "The Black Cat" that are memorable but, similar. In "The Masque of the Red Death" a horrible
disease called the bubonic plague or "red death" sweeps the town. Prince Prospero invites, "a thousand hale and light–hearted friends," to the palace to
hide from the bubonic plague. After six months, a masked figure appears and walks through each room killing everybody including Prince Prospero. In

" At each lapse of the hour, the musicians of the orchestra were constrained to pause, momentarily, in their performance, to hearken to the sound, and
thus the waltzers perforce ceased their evolutions." The musicians, Prince Prospero, and his friends stopped their instruments and dancing. Another
concept in "The Masque of the Red Death" is the setting. There are seven rooms each a different color. This is a symbol of life to death. Describing
the last of the seven chambers in the palace the narrator says, "there flows a ruddier light through the blood–colored panes, and the blackness of the
sable drapery appalls." The story wouldn't be as scary without this creepy room where the masked figure kills Prince Prospero. This leads to imagery,
I can picture this room, eerie and creepy. In this story, there are also unreliable characters including Prince Prospero, his friend, and the Red Death.
The Red Death to me is the most unreliable. He just showed up with no invitation and he also looked funny, the narrator describes him, "The mummer

Use Of Allegory In The Masque Of The Red Death
Have you ever read a story where fantasy is the reality and things do not quite make sense? This is true for "The Masque of the Red Death" by
Edgar Allen Poe. In it is a version of the black plague, which is called the "Red Death". Prince Prospero secludes a thousand friends and himself from
the death around them, but finds that he cannot avoid the inevitable. The author uses many literary devices to create an interesting and meaningful
story. One of the devices used is imagery, which evokes the events of the story clearly in the reader's mind. Another is allegory, which is used by Poe
to create another story within his, as it is filled with double meanings. Lastly, Poe utilizes symbolism to give the story meaning. Edgar Allan Poe uses

There is a "...gigantic clock of ebony" in the black room, its sound is described as "...clear and loud and deep and exceedingly musical, but of so
peculiar a note and emphasis" (421). This suggests that the clock has importance, as it is a physical reminder of death. If the story did not use
imagery, the reader's interpretation of it would be completely different. Poe uses allegory to allude to the double meanings of the characters Prince
Prospero and the masked figure, as well as the setting of the chambers. Prince Prospero represents prosperity. While his nation is suffering from
the "Red Death", "...he summoned to his presence a thousand hale and lighthearted friends...and with these retired to the deep seclusion of one of
his castellated abbey" (420). His nobility and wealth give him the ability to ignore the horror around him and live in luxury. This refers to real life
in that the privileged are the ones who are able to still live comfortably even if others are in a crisis. Prince Prospero also represents an ignorance,
selfishness, and arrogance that come with wealth through right instead of hard work. He believes that "[t]he external world could take care of itself"
and that it is "...folly to grieve, or to think" (420). Instead of taking action to help his people, he just leaves them in the grips of the "Red Death". The

Essay On The Mask Of The Red Death
Edgar Allen Poe's chilling short story Mask of the Red Death begins with people dropping like flies, as the king of the land decides to take his
close friends with him to live in one of his palaces. leaving his subjects to survive on their own. A puzzling creature known as the Red Death has
been terrorizing and killing off people one by one, and no one has a way to stop it. Through characterization of both Prospero and the Red Death,
Poe foreshadows Prospero's eventual death in the end of the story. Prospero's character is seen as incautious, and perhaps arrogant, which adds to
the foreshadowing of the story's ending. When nearly half of the town has died, Prosperous packs up his things and takes his close friends to live
in the safety of one of his many palaces, leaving all the other citizens to fend for themselves against the Red Death. Upon moving to the castle
"Prospero had supplied everything they needed for pleasure" (Poe 2) and never once stopped to consider his subjects, or their safety. In a crucial
time of need, the leader could not be bothered and instead decides to flee, revealing the kind of person he really is. The king's carelessness for
everyone, except his own social circle suggests that this trait may get the best of him in the end. Karma is commonly a substantial factor in literature,
and Prospero certainly appears to have something coming back to bite him. Similarly, the way in which Prospero's character is portrayed proposes that

The Understated Narrator of The Masque of the Red Death
While the narrator of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death" never appears in a scene, he is always on the scene. He reveals himself
overtly only three times, and even then only as one who tells:
"But first let me tell of the rooms in which [the masquerade] was held." (485)
"And the music ceased, as I have told . . ." (488)
"In an assembly of phantasms such as I have painted . . . " (489)
Yet as understated as this narrator is, he presents a cryptic puzzle. The problem is that while he has witnessed the fatal events inside Prince Prospero's
sealed abbey and survives to tell the tale, we learn at the end that...show more content...
The last sentence ("And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all" [490]) could then be read as the equivalent of
Hamlet's "I am dead . . . O, I die, Horatio! . . . The rest is silence" (5.2.338–63). No one finds Hamlet's failure to use the future tense confusing, so why
quibble over the past tense in the last sentence of "Red Death"?
But Poe> has precluded this solution. The puzzle of the narrator is ensured by a seemingly offhand comment exactly halfway through the story. In
the middle of a description of the costumes Prospero has designed for his masque ball, the narrator tells us that "[t]here were much glare and glitter and
piquancy and phantasm––much of what has since been seen in 'Hernani'" (487, emphasis added).
Once we notice this phrase, its effect is startling. The verb tense establishes once and for all the narrator's survival beyond the end of the story.
Furthermore, the reference to Victor Hugo's Hernani gives the narrator a surprising contemporaneity with Poe and his initial readership. Hernani was
first performed in 1830, and Poewrote "Red Death" in 1842. By contrast, the setting of "Red Death" seems older by at least a century or two, giving the
narrator an odd, duplicitous, then–and–now quality. The narrator is simultaneously in Prospero's time, Poe's time, and the reader's time (the latter two

Essay on The Masque of the Red Death: Symbolism
The author, Edgar Allan Poe, using illusion or misdirection keeps the reader is suspense throughout this story called "The Masque of the Red
Death". Symbolism such as the colored rooms, the impressive clock, the feeling of celebration being at a party all makes this story feel like a
fairytale. Poe used this fairytale style and converts it into a nightmare in disguise. In the "Masque of the Red Death," the first sentence, "The Red
Death had long devastated the country," sets the tone for the whole story. Poe describes the horrors of the disease, stressing the redness of the blood
and the scarlet stains. The disease kills so quickly that one can die within thirty minutes of being infected with the disease. To create a frightening effect

The uncaring and celebratory manner in which they present themselves seems vain and outrageous – considering the dreadful disease occurring
elsewhere. Symbolism plays an important part in this story. The ebony clock is particularly significant "there stood against the Western wall, a
gigantic clock of ebony." Poe placed the clock against the western wall for a symbolic purpose. The sun rises in the East and sets in the West. The
clock is nearer to the setting sun. The placement of the clock indicates an association with an ending. A sunset indicates the ending of a day, while
the ebony color of the clock suggests its relationship with darkness and death. The characters react to the sounding of the clock's chimes in a
nervous fashion. "...While the chimes of the clock yet rang, it was observed that the giddiest grew pale." Poe uses this clock to remind the
characters that they have lived through another hour to build up the time of revelation. At each strike of the clock the characters stop everything as if
they are waiting for the "Red Death" to come for them at any minute. At twelve, the stranger dressed as the "Red Death" appears. This time everyone
begins to fear death. The darkness of the rooms causes shadows to form by the fires' light to increase suspense. The story takes place in seven sharply
separated rooms. A reading of the

The Masque o the Red Death Essay
Edgar Allen Poe's The Masque of the Red Death is an elaborate allegory/microcosm that combines objects in
the story with visual descriptions to give focus to the reader's imagination. In the story, a prince named Prospero tries to dodge the Red Death
through isolation and seclusion. He hides behind seemingly impenetrable walls of his castellated abbey and lets the world take care of its own.
However, no walls can stop death because it is inescapable and inevitable. Visual descriptions in the story are used to symbolize death. Poe's use of
language and symbolism is shown in his description of the seventh room in the suite, the ebony clock, and the fire.

However, in the western or black chamber the effect of the firelight that streamed upon the dark hangings through the blood–tinted panes, was ghastly
in the extreme, and produced so wild a look upon the countenances of those who entered..."The fire was meant to produce a shadowy
atmosphere in the west and a favorable one in the east. This is symbolic to the sunrise in the east and sunset in the west because light means life and
darkness means death. Poe uses darkness as another visual representation of death.      The gigantic clock of ebony
is another symbolic object in the story. "Its pendulum swung to and fro with a dull, heavy, monotonous clang; and when the minute hand
made the circuit...it was observed that the giddiest turned pale, and the more aged and sedate passed their hands over their brows as if in confused
reverie or meditation". Hour by hour, minute by minute, second by second, the life of the ebony clock slowly dies. Poe uses the clock as a
symbolic mean that man can escape death, but at the end it is inescapable. The ebony clock is a reminder to Prince Prospero and his guests of their
remaining time before death. Poe's description of the clock's chimes is successful as a constant reminder of their death.
Prince Prospero's efforts of avoid the epidemic is unsuccessful because death will eventually conquer all who
oppose. His ultimate enemy was his refusal to except death as

Essay on Symbolism in The Masque of the Red Death
Symbolism in The Masque of the Red Death
Poe uses heavy symbolism throughout the story to convey his underlying theme: the inevitability of death and the futility of trying to escape death.
The prince's name, Prospero, generally denotes happiness and prosperity. The Prince possesses these characteristics yet is faced with a plague that he
desperately attempting to avoid. This oxymoron is used to hint that this man of exuberance will soon be faced with tragedy. The fires in each of the
suite rooms serve as a representation of death. Poe depicts them to be "a heavy tripod, bearing a brazier of fire that projected its rays through tinted
glass…But in the western or black chamber, the effect of the firelight...show more content...
However, the sunset in the west means the end of a day and darkness. Poe uses the element of darkness as a visual representation of death. The black
clock is also a symbolic element in Poe's story. "Its pendulum swung to and fro with a dull, heavy, monotonous clang; and when the minute hand
made the circuit…it was observed that the giddiest turned pale, and the more aged and sedate passed their hands over their brows as if in
confused reverie or meditation". The timepiece represents the rapid passing of time in life. Every time the clock strikes the hour, the musicians quit
playing and all of the revelers momentarily cease their celebrating. It is as though each hour is
"to be stricken" upon their brief and fleeting lives. To emphasize the brevity of life, the fleeting of life and time, and the nearness of death, Poe
reminds the reader that between the striking of each hour, there elapses "three thousand and six hundred seconds of the Time that flies." The
significance of the seventh room is apparent throughout the entire story. Black usually symbolizes death, and it tends to be used in connection with
death. Furthermore, in describing the black dГ©cor of the room, the narrator says it is "shrouded" in velvet, shrouded being a term generally referring
to death. In addition, the window panes are "scarlet–a deep blood color." The relationship between blood and death is an essential aspect because Poe

The Masque of the Red Death Essay
To begin I would like to state that this is the first time I have had the experience of reading Poe and as such the reading process was greatly
intriguing. The short story I chose was the Masque of the Red Death, which I found to be very dark and vile. From the beginning of the story to the
end I found great concentration on the issues of life and death, among other things, which made the story very dynamic for its size. Another point of
interest I found in the story was Poe's concentration on historical accuracy as he successfully attempts to illustrate the feudal system at its best.
However, two aspects of Poe's writing that I did not exactly enjoy was the use of obscure words and seemingly long sentence which can some times

This is important to recognize because it provides the reader with the image that death is a hideous thing as Poe illustrates the figure as having a
masque with an uncanny resemblance to a "stiffened corpse" and is described as having dressed in clothes of the dead. This figure within the
story is extremely dark and in the case of Prospero and his loyal subject frightening. Clearly Poe did this on purpose as it again relates back to
morality and mortality and I believe the messages that were supposed to be delivered through this dark figure are; you cannot escape death no
matter how "prosperous" one may be and death will strike in its worst form should you choose to disregard those whom you assume responsibility
over. One element of the story pertaining to character was Prosperos ignorance to his kingdom which in turn results in the focus mood. It seems that
throughout the ball the king does absolutely everything he can to cloud the consciences of both himself and his fellow aristocratic companions.
However he never really fully achieves that level of ignorance as Poe forebodes it, be it through the chime of clock or the presence of the unwelcome
guest. What this ultimately means is that again is that none one, regardless of social standing, can just forget about death. The last note worthy point I
will make is Poes use of diction which essentially ties in with the use of imagery. What this element of

Death is inevitable in the human life cycle, so how does one attempt to avoid it? Symbolism is defined as the use of symbols to represent ideas or
qualities. Edgar Allan Poe wrote a short story called, "The Masque of the Red Death." The majority of people believe he is referring to the black
plague that has struck the kingdom. Prince Prospero decides to let the kingdom "peasants" take care of themselves while himself, knights, and chosen
women isolate themselves in Prospero's castle. A little while later, Prospero decides to throw a masquerade ball. During the ball, the red death shows
itself and kills the prince first and then everyone else that is present. Symbolism is represented with the colors, objects, and time. Therefore, in the
short story "The Masque of the Red Death" by Edgar Allan Poe, symbolism is shown in the castle, with the clock, and the seven colored rooms.
Prospero, the knights, and the women use the castle as a shelter in their attempt to escape from the red death. Poe uses Prospero's castle as a
symbol as their escape from death. After talking about Prospero's newly formed "kingdom", Poe talks about Prospero's getaway by saying, "This
was an extensive and magnificent structure, the creation of the prince's own eccentric yet august taste. A strong lofty wall girdled it in" (Poe, par. 2).
Prospero attempted to escape death by isolating himself and a few chosen suspects in his castle to form a "new kingdom". While Poe reveals the castle

In Aesop's fable, "The Wolf and the Lamb," the moral of the story asks the reader to examine the desire for an object–and how we justify our behavior
if we cannot obtain that object. This moral is graphically presented through the repeated use of key words to describe the fox's repeated failure to
get what he wants. The fox's first attempt is foiled as he "just missed" the grapes (35). He attempts "again and again", running and jumping
repeatedly, but has "no greater success" (35). He then becomes disgusted and walks away. These successive descriptions of his failure build to his
disdainful comment that the grapes are probably sour (35). The repeated demonstration of fox's failures and his self–rationalization of why is he

I actually think that there's something admirable about Prospero's arrogance in the face of certain death. His refusal to let anything get him down
seems like a strength of his spirit. It's not easy to basically flip death the bird and stay happy and not scared in the face of a lethal plague. Maybe
Prospero thinks creating one last carefree party is the best way to not let death break him. I'm not saying that he has a right to abandon his peasants.
But his motivations might be nobler than it looks on the surface
Man's relationship with death
The fear of death drives the actions of several of Poe's characters. In particular, the narrator of "The Premature Burial" obsesses about the possibility
of premature burial, and his fear makes him so paranoid that when he wakes up in the berth of a ship, he mistakes it for a grave and has a terrifying
experience for no real reason. At the same time, Poe describes several characters whose response to their fear of death is to avoid it, although the
usual result of their avoidance is increased trauma. Prince Prospero and his courtiers in "The Masque of the Red Death" try to shut themselves away
and ignore the slaughter caused by the Red Death, but death pays no attention to their barriers and kills them en masse. Similarly, the attempt by the
narrator to arrest M. Ernest Valdemar at the point of death in "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar" only causes the consumptive patient to die and
have his body gruesomely dissolve into a

The clock was used to symbolize the remaining time that people had. The way the clock caused attention to itself, which also gave it symbolism was
by chiming very loud every hour. However, there was an anomaly in the sound of the clock, which made everybody, including the band, stand in
silence."And, anon, there strikes the ebony clock which stands in the hall of the velvet. And then, for a moment, all is still, and all is silent save the
voice of the clock. The dreams are stiff–frozen as they stand. But the echoes of the chime die away –– they have endured but an instant –– and a light,
half–subdued laughter floats after them as they depart" (Poe) The clock is rung twelve times, up until midnight, and no more, and many people felt an
uneasy presence, Because the clock did not strike anymore, this meant that someone's or something's time was up. "But now there were twelve strokes
to be sounded by the bell of the clock; and thus it happened, perhaps, that more of thought crept, with more of time, into the meditations of the
thoughtful among those who revelled. And thus, too, it happened, perhaps, that before the last echoes of the last chime had utterly sunk into silence,
there were many individuals in the crowd who had found leisure to become aware of the presence of a masked figure which had arrested the attention
of no single individual before."

A single man's dive into madness and insanity has led to significant contributions in the field of literature. The creation of literary genres such as
detective fiction and gothic mystery has been credited to Edgar Allan Poe. Poe was a troubled mind and was traumatized by many horrific
experiences in his life. However, Poe was able to explore these dark feelings and put them on paper. The dark events and misfortune of Poe's life

"The Mask of the Red Death" reflected Poe's traumatic experience with tuberculosis. Tuberculosis left Poe traumatized with the painful memories
of his mother, brother, adoptive mother, and wife dying slow and painful deaths. "The Mask of the Red Death" is supposed to symbolize a
pandemic such as, tuberculosis as a destructive force that leaves behind nothing but carnage and death. In "The Raven" similar tragedies are
reflected. The speaker explained, "Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing, Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal
ever dared to dream before; But the silence was unbroken, and the stillness gave no token, And the only word there spoken was the whispered
word, "Lenore?" This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, "Lenore!" " The speaker starts having dark and abnormal thoughts as he
looks into the dark, while mourning Lenore's death. The speaker starts to imagine hearing the name of his deceased lover. His sorrow is causing
disillusion. Poe similarly experienced the death of his beloved wife, Virginia Poe. Poe's lifelong experiences with witnessing painful tragedies
firsthand have served as inspirations for works such "The Raven" and "The Mask of the Red

Masque Of The Red Death

  • 1. Masque Of The Red Death "The Masque of the Red Death" Throughout the poem "The Masque of the Red Death" Edgar Allan Poe uses various sentence structure to draw in the reader through emotion. Poe selects his word choice very carefully. He uses words that are not too big but they still give a very deep meaning. Literary devices are just as important to the poem. These devices help readers convey the theme of this poem, which is no matter how wealthy or powerful one is, one can never escape death. Edgar Allan Poe uses numerous sentence structures to connect the reader into the poem. An example of a piece of sentence structure he uses is straight and concise. This displays straight forward language that can be easily identified, and is also very short and brief. The Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. The Masque Of The Red Death Essay From the day we are all born, we have an appointment with death. The truth is that people in society try to have the most fun in their lives by indulging themselves in food, dancing, and partying. Although all of these things are pleasant and enjoyable, people still cannot escape their death. Many try to pass time and live for themselves, when in reality they come closer and closer to their demise. No one better portrays this than Edgar Allen Poe, who in his short story, "The Masque of the Red Death," Poe shows that there is no artifice that can prevent the inevitability of fate when a rich nobleman named Prince Prospero throws a party in his luxurious castle, hoping the Red Death will not affect him. The character Prince Prospero in Poe's "The Masque of Red Death," had the notion that if he were to throw a magnificent party, inviting his careless friends, while being locked in his extravagant castle, that the Red Death would not be able to reach him. "But the Prince Prospero was happy and dauntless and sagacious...this wall had gates of iron...it was folly to grieve, or to think (456)." Prospero truly does think that the castle, with its gates of iron, will guard...show more content... And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all (461)." All people in Poe's story die, and in reality every human being meets with death and decay. The wealthy had suffered the same fate as the poor, even though they had many more possessions and a greater social status than the peasants. Poe goes to symbolize the Red Death as an appointment and a fate that eventually all people in the world must come to face. For some people, such as the ones in "The Masque of the Red Death", choose to indulge themselves in pleasure, helplessly awaiting the fate that has been set for them from the day of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. What Is The Tone In The Masque Of The Red Death "Masque of the Red Death" by Edgar Allen Poe is about when a plague strikes a kingdom somewhere in Europe. The Prince decides that he can protect himself from this plague by securing himself in his castle. He believes that the plague won't harm him and that he can defeat death. But he is not so fortunate at the end of the story. The three literary devices that will be discussed are the symbol, tone, and theme. The Tone of "Masque of the Red Death" is more of a darker atmosphere. At the beginning of the story, the author starts off like this" The Red Death" "had long devastated the country. No pestilence had ever been so fatal, or so hideous. Blood was it is Avatar and its seal–– the redness and the horror of blood."(389). As you can ...show more content... Starting off for the first symbol is "The Red Death" is symbolizing the plague and disease that is taking place in the Kingdom. In the story " The Red Death" shows up the masquerade ball grabbing everybody's attention. Poe tells us " and now was acknowledged the presence of the Red Death. He had come like a thief in the night."(394). No one would expect the Red Death to come in especially the prince. Who thought that he would be safe in his big castle. The prince sends his guards to run after the stranger, but the stranger gets away. The Prince gets away and the stranger leads him to the seventh room which is the next symbol. The prince follows the stranger into this room and the reason it symbolizes death because this is where he dies. Poe describes this room as "The seventh apartment was closely shrouded in black velvet tapestries that hung all over the ceiling and down the walls, falling in heavy folds upon a carpet of the same material and hue. But in this chamber only, the color of the windows failed to correspond with the decorations. The panes here were scarlet ––a deep blood color." (393). • 4. Essay On The Masque Of The Red Death The story that will haunt me the most out of Poe's most famous stories is definitely "The Masque of the Red Death." This story will haunt me for years to come because of the symbols, imagery, unreliable characters, setting and more. This story is also very memorable because it is different from Poe's other stories including, "The Tell–Tale Heart" and "The Black Cat" that are memorable but, similar. In "The Masque of the Red Death" a horrible disease called the bubonic plague or "red death" sweeps the town. Prince Prospero invites, "a thousand hale and light–hearted friends," to the palace to hide from the bubonic plague. After six months, a masked figure appears and walks through each room killing everybody including Prince Prospero. In "The Masque of the Red Death" the...show more content... " At each lapse of the hour, the musicians of the orchestra were constrained to pause, momentarily, in their performance, to hearken to the sound, and thus the waltzers perforce ceased their evolutions." The musicians, Prince Prospero, and his friends stopped their instruments and dancing. Another concept in "The Masque of the Red Death" is the setting. There are seven rooms each a different color. This is a symbol of life to death. Describing the last of the seven chambers in the palace the narrator says, "there flows a ruddier light through the blood–colored panes, and the blackness of the sable drapery appalls." The story wouldn't be as scary without this creepy room where the masked figure kills Prince Prospero. This leads to imagery, I can picture this room, eerie and creepy. In this story, there are also unreliable characters including Prince Prospero, his friend, and the Red Death. The Red Death to me is the most unreliable. He just showed up with no invitation and he also looked funny, the narrator describes him, "The mummer had gone so far as to assume the type of the Red Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Use Of Allegory In The Masque Of The Red Death Have you ever read a story where fantasy is the reality and things do not quite make sense? This is true for "The Masque of the Red Death" by Edgar Allen Poe. In it is a version of the black plague, which is called the "Red Death". Prince Prospero secludes a thousand friends and himself from the death around them, but finds that he cannot avoid the inevitable. The author uses many literary devices to create an interesting and meaningful story. One of the devices used is imagery, which evokes the events of the story clearly in the reader's mind. Another is allegory, which is used by Poe to create another story within his, as it is filled with double meanings. Lastly, Poe utilizes symbolism to give the story meaning. Edgar Allan Poe uses ...show more content... There is a "...gigantic clock of ebony" in the black room, its sound is described as "...clear and loud and deep and exceedingly musical, but of so peculiar a note and emphasis" (421). This suggests that the clock has importance, as it is a physical reminder of death. If the story did not use imagery, the reader's interpretation of it would be completely different. Poe uses allegory to allude to the double meanings of the characters Prince Prospero and the masked figure, as well as the setting of the chambers. Prince Prospero represents prosperity. While his nation is suffering from the "Red Death", "...he summoned to his presence a thousand hale and lighthearted friends...and with these retired to the deep seclusion of one of his castellated abbey" (420). His nobility and wealth give him the ability to ignore the horror around him and live in luxury. This refers to real life in that the privileged are the ones who are able to still live comfortably even if others are in a crisis. Prince Prospero also represents an ignorance, selfishness, and arrogance that come with wealth through right instead of hard work. He believes that "[t]he external world could take care of itself" and that it is "...folly to grieve, or to think" (420). Instead of taking action to help his people, he just leaves them in the grips of the "Red Death". The "Red Death" is Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Essay On The Mask Of The Red Death Edgar Allen Poe's chilling short story Mask of the Red Death begins with people dropping like flies, as the king of the land decides to take his close friends with him to live in one of his palaces. leaving his subjects to survive on their own. A puzzling creature known as the Red Death has been terrorizing and killing off people one by one, and no one has a way to stop it. Through characterization of both Prospero and the Red Death, Poe foreshadows Prospero's eventual death in the end of the story. Prospero's character is seen as incautious, and perhaps arrogant, which adds to the foreshadowing of the story's ending. When nearly half of the town has died, Prosperous packs up his things and takes his close friends to live in the safety of one of his many palaces, leaving all the other citizens to fend for themselves against the Red Death. Upon moving to the castle "Prospero had supplied everything they needed for pleasure" (Poe 2) and never once stopped to consider his subjects, or their safety. In a crucial time of need, the leader could not be bothered and instead decides to flee, revealing the kind of person he really is. The king's carelessness for everyone, except his own social circle suggests that this trait may get the best of him in the end. Karma is commonly a substantial factor in literature, and Prospero certainly appears to have something coming back to bite him. Similarly, the way in which Prospero's character is portrayed proposes that maybe his own ego may Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. The Understated Narrator of The Masque of the Red Death While the narrator of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death" never appears in a scene, he is always on the scene. He reveals himself overtly only three times, and even then only as one who tells: "But first let me tell of the rooms in which [the masquerade] was held." (485) "And the music ceased, as I have told . . ." (488) "In an assembly of phantasms such as I have painted . . . " (489) Yet as understated as this narrator is, he presents a cryptic puzzle. The problem is that while he has witnessed the fatal events inside Prince Prospero's sealed abbey and survives to tell the tale, we learn at the end that...show more content... The last sentence ("And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all" [490]) could then be read as the equivalent of Hamlet's "I am dead . . . O, I die, Horatio! . . . The rest is silence" (5.2.338–63). No one finds Hamlet's failure to use the future tense confusing, so why quibble over the past tense in the last sentence of "Red Death"? But Poe> has precluded this solution. The puzzle of the narrator is ensured by a seemingly offhand comment exactly halfway through the story. In the middle of a description of the costumes Prospero has designed for his masque ball, the narrator tells us that "[t]here were much glare and glitter and piquancy and phantasm––much of what has since been seen in 'Hernani'" (487, emphasis added). Once we notice this phrase, its effect is startling. The verb tense establishes once and for all the narrator's survival beyond the end of the story. Furthermore, the reference to Victor Hugo's Hernani gives the narrator a surprising contemporaneity with Poe and his initial readership. Hernani was first performed in 1830, and Poewrote "Red Death" in 1842. By contrast, the setting of "Red Death" seems older by at least a century or two, giving the narrator an odd, duplicitous, then–and–now quality. The narrator is simultaneously in Prospero's time, Poe's time, and the reader's time (the latter two were nearly the

In Poe's short story The Masque of the Red Death Poe said "The "Red Death" had long long devastated the country. No pestilence had ever been so fatal, or hideous" (Poe). Back in the days the story was written, the red death had killed you within the half hour if you had been contaminated with it. Red death was a big fear in the story. The symptoms were really scary. • 10. Essay on The Masque of the Red Death: Symbolism The author, Edgar Allan Poe, using illusion or misdirection keeps the reader is suspense throughout this story called "The Masque of the Red Death". Symbolism such as the colored rooms, the impressive clock, the feeling of celebration being at a party all makes this story feel like a fairytale. Poe used this fairytale style and converts it into a nightmare in disguise. In the "Masque of the Red Death," the first sentence, "The Red Death had long devastated the country," sets the tone for the whole story. Poe describes the horrors of the disease, stressing the redness of the blood and the scarlet stains. The disease kills so quickly that one can die within thirty minutes of being infected with the disease. To create a frightening effect ...show more content... The uncaring and celebratory manner in which they present themselves seems vain and outrageous – considering the dreadful disease occurring elsewhere. Symbolism plays an important part in this story. The ebony clock is particularly significant "there stood against the Western wall, a gigantic clock of ebony." Poe placed the clock against the western wall for a symbolic purpose. The sun rises in the East and sets in the West. The clock is nearer to the setting sun. The placement of the clock indicates an association with an ending. A sunset indicates the ending of a day, while the ebony color of the clock suggests its relationship with darkness and death. The characters react to the sounding of the clock's chimes in a nervous fashion. "...While the chimes of the clock yet rang, it was observed that the giddiest grew pale." Poe uses this clock to remind the characters that they have lived through another hour to build up the time of revelation. At each strike of the clock the characters stop everything as if they are waiting for the "Red Death" to come for them at any minute. At twelve, the stranger dressed as the "Red Death" appears. This time everyone begins to fear death. The darkness of the rooms causes shadows to form by the fires' light to increase suspense. The story takes place in seven sharply separated rooms. • 11. The Masque o the Red Death Essay      Edgar Allen Poe's The Masque of the Red Death is an elaborate allegory/microcosm that combines objects in the story with visual descriptions to give focus to the reader's imagination. In the story, a prince named Prospero tries to dodge the Red Death through isolation and seclusion. He hides behind seemingly impenetrable walls of his castellated abbey and lets the world take care of its own. However, no walls can stop death because it is inescapable and inevitable. Visual descriptions in the story are used to symbolize death. Poe's use of language and symbolism is shown in his description of the seventh room in the suite, the ebony clock, and the fire.      The first symbolic mean...show more content... However, in the western or black chamber the effect of the firelight that streamed upon the dark hangings through the blood–tinted panes, was ghastly in the extreme, and produced so wild a look upon the countenances of those who entered..."The fire was meant to produce a shadowy atmosphere in the west and a favorable one in the east. This is symbolic to the sunrise in the east and sunset in the west because light means life and darkness means death. Poe uses darkness as another visual representation of death.      The gigantic clock of ebony is another symbolic object in the story. "Its pendulum swung to and fro with a dull, heavy, monotonous clang; and when the minute hand made the circuit...it was observed that the giddiest turned pale, and the more aged and sedate passed their hands over their brows as if in confused reverie or meditation". Hour by hour, minute by minute, second by second, the life of the ebony clock slowly dies. Poe uses the clock as a symbolic mean that man can escape death, but at the end it is inescapable. The ebony clock is a reminder to Prince Prospero and his guests of their remaining time before death. Poe's description of the clock's chimes is successful as a constant reminder of their death.       Prince Prospero's efforts of avoid the epidemic is unsuccessful because death will eventually conquer all who oppose. His ultimate enemy was his refusal to except death as Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Essay on Symbolism in The Masque of the Red Death Symbolism in The Masque of the Red Death Poe uses heavy symbolism throughout the story to convey his underlying theme: the inevitability of death and the futility of trying to escape death. The prince's name, Prospero, generally denotes happiness and prosperity. The Prince possesses these characteristics yet is faced with a plague that he desperately attempting to avoid. This oxymoron is used to hint that this man of exuberance will soon be faced with tragedy. The fires in each of the suite rooms serve as a representation of death. Poe depicts them to be "a heavy tripod, bearing a brazier of fire that projected its rays through tinted glass…But in the western or black chamber, the effect of the firelight...show more content... However, the sunset in the west means the end of a day and darkness. Poe uses the element of darkness as a visual representation of death. The black clock is also a symbolic element in Poe's story. "Its pendulum swung to and fro with a dull, heavy, monotonous clang; and when the minute hand made the circuit…it was observed that the giddiest turned pale, and the more aged and sedate passed their hands over their brows as if in confused reverie or meditation". The timepiece represents the rapid passing of time in life. Every time the clock strikes the hour, the musicians quit playing and all of the revelers momentarily cease their celebrating. It is as though each hour is "to be stricken" upon their brief and fleeting lives. To emphasize the brevity of life, the fleeting of life and time, and the nearness of death, Poe reminds the reader that between the striking of each hour, there elapses "three thousand and six hundred seconds of the Time that flies." The significance of the seventh room is apparent throughout the entire story. Black usually symbolizes death, and it tends to be used in connection with death. Furthermore, in describing the black dГ©cor of the room, the narrator says it is "shrouded" in velvet, shrouded being a term generally referring to death. In addition, the window panes are "scarlet–a deep blood color." The relationship between blood and death is an essential aspect because Poe wants the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. The Masque of the Red Death Essay To begin I would like to state that this is the first time I have had the experience of reading Poe and as such the reading process was greatly intriguing. The short story I chose was the Masque of the Red Death, which I found to be very dark and vile. From the beginning of the story to the end I found great concentration on the issues of life and death, among other things, which made the story very dynamic for its size. Another point of interest I found in the story was Poe's concentration on historical accuracy as he successfully attempts to illustrate the feudal system at its best. However, two aspects of Poe's writing that I did not exactly enjoy was the use of obscure words and seemingly long sentence which can some times take away...show more content... This is important to recognize because it provides the reader with the image that death is a hideous thing as Poe illustrates the figure as having a masque with an uncanny resemblance to a "stiffened corpse" and is described as having dressed in clothes of the dead. This figure within the story is extremely dark and in the case of Prospero and his loyal subject frightening. Clearly Poe did this on purpose as it again relates back to morality and mortality and I believe the messages that were supposed to be delivered through this dark figure are; you cannot escape death no matter how "prosperous" one may be and death will strike in its worst form should you choose to disregard those whom you assume responsibility over. One element of the story pertaining to character was Prosperos ignorance to his kingdom which in turn results in the focus mood. It seems that throughout the ball the king does absolutely everything he can to cloud the consciences of both himself and his fellow aristocratic companions. However he never really fully achieves that level of ignorance as Poe forebodes it, be it through the chime of clock or the presence of the unwelcome guest. What this ultimately means is that again is that none one, regardless of social standing, can just forget about death. The last note worthy point I will make is Poes use of diction which essentially ties in with the use of imagery. What this element of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. The Masque Of The Red Death Death is inevitable in the human life cycle, so how does one attempt to avoid it? Symbolism is defined as the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. Edgar Allan Poe wrote a short story called, "The Masque of the Red Death." The majority of people believe he is referring to the black plague that has struck the kingdom. Prince Prospero decides to let the kingdom "peasants" take care of themselves while himself, knights, and chosen women isolate themselves in Prospero's castle. A little while later, Prospero decides to throw a masquerade ball. During the ball, the red death shows itself and kills the prince first and then everyone else that is present. Symbolism is represented with the colors, objects, and time. Therefore, in the short story "The Masque of the Red Death" by Edgar Allan Poe, symbolism is shown in the castle, with the clock, and the seven colored rooms. Prospero, the knights, and the women use the castle as a shelter in their attempt to escape from the red death. Poe uses Prospero's castle as a symbol as their escape from death. After talking about Prospero's newly formed "kingdom", Poe talks about Prospero's getaway by saying, "This was an extensive and magnificent structure, the creation of the prince's own eccentric yet august taste. • 15. The Masque of the Red Death In Aesop's fable, "The Wolf and the Lamb," the moral of the story asks the reader to examine the desire for an object–and how we justify our behavior if we cannot obtain that object. This moral is graphically presented through the repeated use of key words to describe the fox's repeated failure to get what he wants. The fox's first attempt is foiled as he "just missed" the grapes (35). He attempts "again and again", running and jumping repeatedly, but has "no greater success" (35). He then becomes disgusted and walks away. These successive descriptions of his failure build to his disdainful comment that the grapes are probably sour (35). The repeated demonstration of fox's failures and his self–rationalization of why is he walking away–not...show more content... I actually think that there's something admirable about Prospero's arrogance in the face of certain death. His refusal to let anything get him down seems like a strength of his spirit. It's not easy to basically flip death the bird and stay happy and not scared in the face of a lethal plague. Maybe Prospero thinks creating one last carefree party is the best way to not let death break him. I'm not saying that he has a right to abandon his peasants. But his motivations might be nobler than it looks on the surface Man's relationship with death The fear of death drives the actions of several of Poe's characters. In particular, the narrator of "The Premature Burial" obsesses about the possibility of premature burial, and his fear makes him so paranoid that when he wakes up in the berth of a ship, he mistakes it for a grave and has a terrifying experience for no real reason. At the same time, Poe describes several characters whose response to their fear of death is to avoid it, although the usual result of their avoidance is increased trauma. Prince Prospero and his courtiers in "The Masque of the Red Death" try to shut themselves away and ignore the slaughter caused by the Red Death, but death pays no attention to their barriers and kills them en masse. Similarly, the attempt by the narrator to arrest M. Ernest Valdemar at the point of death in "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar" only causes the consumptive patient to die and have his body gruesomely dissolve into a Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The way the clock caused attention to itself, which also gave it symbolism was by chiming very loud every hour. However, there was an anomaly in the sound of the clock, which made everybody, including the band, stand in silence."And, anon, there strikes the ebony clock which stands in the hall of the velvet. And then, for a moment, all is still, and all is silent save the voice of the clock. The dreams are stiff–frozen as they stand.
