William Herschel discovers
the planet Uranus; the first
planet to be discovered that
could not be seen with the
naked eye.
Herschel’s 40ft telescope
was situated in the garden
of Observatory House and
used up until 1815
Herschel, who had moved to England
from Hanover, decided to settle in Slough
following his appointment by King
George III as his ‘private astronomer’.
Further discoveries from Herschel
included four moons: two of
Uranus – Oberon and Titania in
1787; and two of Saturn – Enceladus
