50 Innovative Companies in Combat Medicine & Battlefield
Healthcare 2016: Leading Suppliers of Military Triage, Medical
Equipment & Devices, Deployable Shelters & Distributors
4. Expert Opinion
4.1 Paul Harder JD, President, H&H Medical Corporation
Originally an engineering consulting firm, H&H has developed, manufactured and sold combat first
aid equipment for over a decade. The company, based in Ordinary, Virginia, supplies a range of
products for point of injury responses, ranging from bleeding control equipment through to burns
treatments. H&H Medical Corporation has a strong record of delivering products to the US military.
Paul Harder, with over 20 years of operations and consulting experience, is President of H&H
Medical Corporation. visiongain interviewed Mr Harder in October 2015, and are grateful for his
contribution to this report.
4.1.1 Product Range Demand and Market Competition
visiongain: Are there any particular segments of your product range that are in high demand
currently?
Paul Harder: The vast majority of our products are in high demand right now because they are
really primarily for resupply for the US military, and from the civilian law enforcement end there is a
lot of interest right now in haemorrhage control and blood loss management at the point of injury.
visiongain: How intense is market competition for the type of products which your company
supplies?
Paul Harder: It varies. There are military and then there are civilian markets. In the military market
we are in competition with several other competitors, but because of the way the US military
purchases, we have unique products with unique national stock numbers, and when those get
specified in a specific kit or specific configuration, they have to buy that stock number. We do not
necessarily compete, but we compete at the kit configuration level. Once that kit is set, then it is
bought based on the national stock number, and because we have some proprietary designs and
configurations we can control that, meaning there is no competition for our bandages or chest
dressings.
On the civilian side, there is a lot of competition because customers can choose from anything off
the shelf that might be made overseas, through to some of our products that are made
domestically.

5.2.9.10 Dräger Medical GmbH Analysis
Dräger Medical GmbH is a component of Dräger, an international company based in Germany that
operates in technical markets including breathing and protection equipment, as well as patient
monitoring systems and medical products. Dräger Medical’s military services are supported by its
other safety division. Similarly, it is logical to assume that both of these divisions share research
and development benefits due to their similarities.
A particular strength of the company is that they have a distinguished market that can be described
as niche. Importantly, they have established themselves as a well-performing company. Their
sales revenues also increased in 2014, a good indicator for the company’s performance. Whilst net
income decreased, their spending on research and development continues to rise steadily, which
is indicative of their strategy moving forward.
Comparisons with other companies within this market are slightly limited due to the company’s
focus on safety equipment, notably for more CBRN purposes, and also as a result of their limited
involvement in combat medical equipment. Their inclusion in this report is a result of the diversity
they bring to the types of company’s profiled. They are a useful example of the wide applications
potentially within the breathing equipment market.
