1. Farm trial – problem herds
• 13 herds selected by local bovine practitioners
• Selection criteria were herds with milk fever problems
recognised by veterinary practitioners
• Twenty cows in late pregnancy were selected on
each farm
• The first ten cows were allocated as untreated
controls and
• the following 10 cows formed the treatment group

2. Farm trial – problem herds
• The cows in the treatment group were supplemented
with X-Zelit® during the period 14 days before
expected calving and until actual calving date
• No other milk fever preventive treatments, such as
oral calcium preparations or rumen pumping with
solutions containing calcium or other electrolytes,
were accepted during the experiment
