We are excited to welcome our new College of
Alameda President, Dr. Joi Lin Blake. Dr. Blake
comes to us with extensive experience in
community college settings as an administrator,
counselor, and instructor. She brings deep
knowledge about best practices in student
services and student access, as well as a
demonstrated commitment to equity. While she
has only been here a short time, we are already
seeing the positive impacts she is making at
COA. For example, she's supporting Student
Activities by providing new computers for Cyber
Cafe! Her leadership, dedication, and
compassion for students aligns directly with
COA's Mission Statement. We are thrilled to
have her here and look forward to working with
her closely to provide a quality educational
experience for all students.
Welcome to the family Dr. Blake!

College of Alameda Student Highlight:
Jorge Cabral
He has committed to utilize the education he is gaining at College of
Alameda to help his family and community prosper. Since being
enrolled at College of Alameda, he has maintained a 3.5 GPA and
now has aspirations of transferring to the University of California,
Berkeley. Last semester he was awarded the Oakland Scholar’s
Award of $2,500 and the Ruth Bittmann Memorial Scholarship of
$500. Not only has he excelled academically, but he has already
impacted the lives of many others. For example, in large part due to
him and his participation in Open Gate, he has been critical in
enrolling many that he was formerly incarcerated with at the College
of Alameda. He is also a founding member of Open Gate Men’s
Advisory Council (O.G.MAC) a mentoring and advisory service for
young students who have been incarcerated. Jorge is also a student
ambassador for Open Gate and a peer mentor for the Brotherhood
Program. Thank you to the many COA employees who have played
a significant role in Jorge’s trajectory. Jorge stated at a Brotherhood
event that he “used to be scared to come to campus, but now I see
the college as my home. I see the Pitt as my living room and the
Quad as my backyard”. When you see Jorge on campus please
congratulate him and encourage him to continue his journey
towards his goals.
Jorge Luis Cabral is a participant in the Open
Gate and Brotherhood Program. Jorge was
raised in East Oakland by parents who did not
speak English and who worked low paying
jobs with long hours. As a youth he was
exposed to a litany of social toxins that
included drugs, gangs, and violence. His past
has included time in and out of a juvenile
detention center and jail starting at the age of
14. Now a father, Jorge has committed to
transform his life for the well being of his son.
Thank you for your
leadership Jorge!

Carl Dix at College of Alameda
Carl Dix is a co-founder, with Dr.
Cornel West, of the Stop Mass
Incarceration Network. On Friday,
January 23, Mr. Dix came to
College of Alameda to discuss
policing in Latino and African
American communities. An
interesting and relevant dialogue,
Mr. Dix sparked rich discussion
and critical thinking with the
community, students and faculty
who were present. Thank you to
our student club Students
Against Mass Incarceration for
organizing the event.
Thank you for a powerful
presentation Mr. Dix!

Have a great semester!
What do you think could be improved
at College of Alameda?
"When I first started attending the
College of Alameda, the campus was
very plain - there wasn't very many
activities on campus. Now, it's slowly
improving. It's getting students more
upbeat and active to stay on campus
longer than to just leave and
gosomewhere else. Something I feel
we need more of are physics and art
classes so I don't have to go to
another campus. Also, if the shuttle
bus could run more often than every
30 minutes, that would be great."
What do you like most about
being a student at the College of
Alameda?
What do you like most about the College
of Alameda?
"What I really like about the College of
Alameda is the people who manage
the Financial Aid desk. When you need
help, everyone greets you in a positive
way. They always find a solution to
your problem, and even
undocumented students have access
to a great deal of information. Lam,
specifically, has helped me in a
number of different ways, especially
when it comes to accessing work study
on campus."April Cunningham
"What I really like about being a
student at College of Alameda is
the teachers, especially my
calculus teacher, Michael Valdez.
I like his style of teaching. Also
what I like is that no matter
whattime of the day it is--
morning, noon or evening--you
can get a class!"
