SHARE THEIR TIPS FOR
REDUCING
FOOD WASTE.
HERE’S WHAT
THEY SAID:
6. TIP #1
Buy shelf stable items (granola bars, animal
crackers, cheese & crackers, oatmeal, etc.)
in bulk and pre-packaged. This way there is
always a snack around when we need a little
extra boost, BUT there are not leftovers
to be thrown away.

7. TIP #2
Have an efficient and strategic food
purchasing plan in place to reduce at the
source.

8. TIP #3
When planning food for an event, think in
terms of ounces per person. Plan 4-6 oz. of
protein, 3-4 of your starch, and 4 oz. of
veggies. This way you don’t have an
abundance of leftovers, and it’s better for
your waist-line.

9. TIP #4
Get rid of bottled or canned soda, and
install a soda fountain instead. Because we
use washable cups, we’ve reduced our can
and bottle waste considerably.

10. TIP #5
Have a “going off” box in the refrigerator,
with almost expired things, so they can be
used before a new one is opened.

11. TIP #6
If you’re planning an event, pack extra
disposable containers. When the event is
over, distribute the leftovers to staff and
volunteers. (Just be sure to only distribute
food that has been held at a safe
temperature.)

12. TIP #7
Partner with an organization like Special E,
who will come to your event and take
leftover food, floral arrangements and other
supplies. They deliver the goods to shelters
and other places who will enjoy your
leftovers.

into beautiful soil.
