Facebook announced plans to acquire Instagram, the popular photo sharing app, for $1 billion in cash and stock. Instagram had grown rapidly since its launch in 2010 and had over 30 million users sharing over 300 million photos per day. The acquisition would allow Facebook to expand into the mobile photo sharing space and leverage Instagram's growth while maintaining it as a separate service.
