COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Sustainability/Sustarnabie Development is both, a theory and practicethat entails three equitable and mutually
re-enforcing dimensions: social, economic and environmental. White applying a variety of sustainability
principles in the classroom setting, this course provides theoretical and practical frameworks, historical
contexts, and applied knowledgefor understanding how societies canaddress, respond to and make decisions
for a Triple-Bottom-Une (3BL)sustainability that engages all of Planet, People, and Profits/Prosperity (PPP).
This solutions-oriented course - that also emphasizes current situations in sustainability at the local, national
and international leveis -- strives to narrate the dynamic story of sustainabledevelopment over simply giving
cold,factual, information.
The course facilitates the development of cognitive, critical-thinking and systems-thinking skills based on an
interdisciplinary, problem-solving, analytical and global approach to historical, philosophical/ethical, social,
political, economic, and environmental issues. Its purpose is to provide an integrated and holistic
understanding of the multitude and diversity of interconnections underlying focal and global sustainabiiity
decision-making in the public, private and voluntary (third or NGO) sectors.
Through an emphasis on Internet-based resources as well as sustainability related publications, the course
strives to enhance student's knowledge. As the first required course taken in Ryerson's Certificate in
Susta'mabittty Management program, the course also takes time to discuss the soft and hardskills required for
sustainability management professionals.
