2. un grupo de personas corre por Londres, otro por Barcelona, París
y Sydney. Algunos corren incluso por las calles de Hanói, Viet-
nam, mientras otros bailan al ritmo de canciones lentas en Nueva
York. Esto mientras intercambian opiniones y emociones acerca de
diferentes problemáticas contemporáneas, de una forma interacti-
va y performativa. Ambas instancias corresponden a ‘formatos de
arte’, concepto acuñado por el artista conceptual franco-danés,
Thierry Geoffroy (también conocido como Colonel), para referirse
a su propio trabajo “ya que el formato de la obra de arte es la obra
de arte”, asegura.
En los formatos mencionados (Critical run y Slow dance debate, res-
pectivamente) los participantes intercambian parejas durante las se-
siones, lo que crea un ágora dinámica, una atmósfera en la que las
opiniones y las emociones se intercambian in situ. “Tratar de recobrar
el aliento mientras corres y hablas al mismo tiempo, es un desafío
físico para los participantes, mientras que romper la barrera del es-
pacio personal al bailar con un desconocido, es un desafío social”,
afirma Colonel.
Ambas actividades se relacionan con entrenar el “músculo de la
consciencia”, un formato en el que el artista propone despertar a
las personas dormidas por los espectáculos, la política e incluso
el mismo arte contemporáneo, que por estos días, de acuerdo al
artista, cumple la función de satisfacer la necesidad de un público
que busca ir a una exposición, preocuparse un rato y luego olvi-
darse de la verdadera problemática, sin tomar acción o postura
real alguna.

ions and emotions about different burning issues in an interactive
and performance-like manner. Both instances correspond to “art
formats,” a concept coined by the French-Danish conceptual artist
Thierry Geoffroy (also known as Colonel) to refer to his own work
“because to do art format is my art” he states.
In the aforementioned formats (Critical run and Slow dance de-
bate, respectively) the participants exchange partners during the
sessions, which creates a dynamic agora, an atmosphere in which
opinions and emotions are exchanged in situ. “Trying to regain
your breath while running and talking at the same time is a physi-
cal challenge for the participants, while breaking down the barrier
of personal space dancing with a stranger is a social challenge,”
Colonel says.
Both activities are related to training “the awareness muscle,” a
format in which the artist intends to awaken people that have
fallen asleep because of the spectacles, politics, and even con-
temporary art, which currently, in accordance to the artist, per-
forms the function of satisfying an audience that wants to go to
an exhibition, become concerned for a while, and then forget
about the true issue, without taking any real measure or adopt-

3. ¿Crees que es deber del arte despertar a las personas?
Si alguien presencia un crimen o accidente, tiene que asistir a la
persona que se encuentra en peligro. Si un artista observa una dis-
función alarmante, debe gritar lo que sabe de inmediato. El artista es
un experto en la comunicación visual. Como experto, tiene la capa-
cidad y el deber de alertar a los otros. Si no lo hace, no contribuye a
la solidaridad en la sociedad. La indiferencia y el no preocuparse de-
bería considerarse un error garrafal. El rol del artista es usar su pericia
visual para servir a la sociedad civil, que ahora está sobre utilizando
la comunicación visual.
Bajo esta premisa, Thierry Geoffroy utiliza diferentes medios, incluyendo
videos e instalaciones, para realizar una crítica activa y un llamado
de consciencia, entre otras problemáticas, sobre la inmigración, el
armamentismo, el mercado y las estructuras que gobiernan el arte
contemporáneo, éstas últimas representadas en el formato de arte
Biennalist, el cual provoca y propone una discusión acerca de bienales
y ferias, al mismo tiempo que estas suceden. En este formato, entre
otras activaciones, se presentan tiendas de campañas con enérgicos
mensajes: “La emergencia sustituirá lo contemporáneo”, haciendo
referencia a que el arte pasará a un segundo plano cuando las emer-
gencias sociales acrescenten, usando las galerías como hospitales,
por ejemplo, o “Las artes te distraen de la realidad”, entre otras.
¿Qué características poseen las carpas para haber sido elegidas
como soporte de tu trabajo?
Las carpas refieren a situaciones de emergencia, son arquitecturas
de emergencia móviles. Pueden insertarse en un contexto determina-
Do you think it is the duty of art to wake people up?
If someone sees a crime or accident, they must help the person in
danger. If an artist observes an alarming malfunction, he or she
must scream about it immediately. Artists are experts in visual com-
munication. As an expert, they have the capacity and duty to warn
others. If they do not, they do not contribute towards solidarity in
society. Indifference and not being concerned should be consid-
ered a tremendous mistake. The role of artists is to use their visual
skills and brain to serve society, which is now overusing visual com-
munication.
Starting from this premise, Thierry Geoffroy uses different media,
including videos and installations, to make an active critique and
call for attention, among other issues, to immigration, the arms
race, the market, and structures that govern contemporary art, the
latter ones represented in the Biennalist art format, which provokes
and proposes a discussion about biennales and fairs at the same
time that these are held. Within this format, among other activa-
tions, tents with vigorous messages are set up: “The emergency will
replace the contemporary,” referencing the fact that contemporary
art will fall into the background once social emergencies grow,
using galleries as hospitals, for example, or “Art distracts you from
reality,” among others.
What features do tents have that made you chose them as the
support for your work?
Tents reference emergency situations, they are mobile emergency
architecture. They can be inserted into a determined context and

4. question it. They are symbols of fragility and the struggle for exist-
ence. They are alive (or still are), calling for justice and question-
ing the reasons of their misery. They try to survive and resist against
the large and powerful dragons that spit fire on them. They are
predictions about the world of tomorrow. They yearn to emphasize
the questions written on them or warn about their predictions.
Their message is frontal, direct.
Among the most recent works of the artist are a series of pieces
presented at the official press conference of documenta14 (d14):
“Contemporary is the botox of capitalism. Capitalism uses art to
pretend that it cares about individuals. Contemporary art is used
to simulate the illusion of kindness, the illusion of an observing
dog,” states Thierry Geoffroy about the largest art convention in
Germany, which is usually held in Kassel, but that in 2017, as an
exception, was held in Athens.
According to Colonel, the artist must stay critical before a self-
denominated critical event (like d14 does), because the in-
stance can become an apparently critical and open minded
platform, when in reality it directs attention towards a specific
direction, controlled by external forces and economic or politi-
cal interests. “This false critique in the world of contemporary
art could be the source of apathy in our society,” explains the
artist, who believes that if artists, as “watchmen of society”
fall asleep, we would risk that the world travels down a closed
minded and absolutist path.

ciones sobre el mundo de mañana. Anhelan resaltar las preguntas
que llevan escritas o alertar sobre las predicciones que hacen. Su
mensaje es frontal, directo.
Entre los trabajos más recientes del artista, se encuentran una serie
de piezas presentadas en la conferencia de prensa oficial de docu-
menta14 (d14):“Lo contemporáneo es el botox del capitalismo”. El ca-
pitalismo usa el arte para fingir que le preocupan los individuos. Se
emplea el arte contemporáneo para simular la ilusión de bondad,
la ilusión de un perro que observa”, afirma Thierry Geoffroy, sobre el
mayor encuentro de arte de Alemania, que usualmente se realiza en
Kassel, pero que en 2017, de forma excepcional, se realizó con otra
sede en Atenas.
De acuerdo a Coronel, los artistas deben mantenerse críticos ante
un autodenominado evento crítico (como lo hace d14), ya que la
instancia puede convertirse en una plataforma aparentemente crítica
y de mentalidad abierta, cuando en realidad lleva la atención a una
dirección determinada, controlada por fuerzas externas e intereses
económicos o políticos. “Esta falsa crítica en el mundo de arte contem-
poráneo podría ser la fuente de apatía en nuestra sociedad”, explica el
artista, quien cree que si los artistas como “fuerza de vigilia en nuestra
sociedad” se duermen, podríamos arriesgarnos a que el mundo em-
prenda un rumbo de pensamiento cerrado y absolutista.
