A and B are called mutually exclusive when
P(A and B)=0

P(A and B)= P(A)·P(B|A)
P(B|A) is the probability of B given A has
occurred.
A and B are called independent events if and only if
P(B|A)=P(B)
and then P(A and B) = P(A)·P(B)
Two events are dependent if and only if the
occurrence of one event affects the probability of
the other.

taking the Essay portion of CLAST passed. If only
70% of those taking Math passed, what is the
probability that a randomly selected student will
fail both the Essay and the Math portion?
Since 70% passed math, 30% or 3/10 failed and

And we will assume the two events are independent
