Prazosin has shown promise for reducing nightmares associated with PTSD in several studies:
- Open-label trials found that prazosin significantly reduced or eliminated nightmares in veterans and other patients with PTSD. Doses of 1-10 mg at bedtime were generally effective.
- Retrospective reviews also demonstrated improvements in nightmares and other PTSD symptoms with prazosin treatment. Up to 78% of patients experienced benefits.
- Placebo-controlled trials further supported prazosin's effectiveness, with recipients reporting fewer and less severe nightmares compared to placebo. Prazosin significantly improved scores on standardized PTSD scales.
- Common side effects were mild and included dizziness and headache.
