RELAY FOR LIFE HAS RECORD TURNOUT
Latest Stories
A record number of students and community members gathered Friday,
April 15, into the early hours of Saturday, April 16, for the annual Relay for
Life event at SUNY Oneonta’s Alumni Field House.
A total of 1,500 people attended the event, which raised $58,000 for the
American Cancer Society. Student volunteers from the Colleges Against
Cancer clubs at SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick College organized the
event, which ran from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday and was packed
with activities.
“I think the best part is that it’s not only to help battle against cancer, but
it brings together the Oneonta and Hartwick communities, and
everyone’s fighting for the same cause,” said SUNY Oneonta student and
Colleges Against Cancer member Emma Romeo.
This year’s event had an Olympics theme. Each team of participants was given a country to represent, and team
members carried around flags or wore shirts representing their respective countries.
The event kicked off with an opening ceremony. Walkers were entertained all night with games, dancing and
music, including performances by Hartwick’s Dancers Against Cancer team and Not So Sharp a cappella group,
and an acoustic set by former Oneonta student Zack Reyes.

Organizations and clubs from both colleges had fundraising tables around the
perimeter of the gym. Walkers had the chance to decorate cupcakes, play “bra-
pong” or even participate in a Hoola-Hoop Olympics. The Oneonta Equestrian
Team had a game where participants had to jump over a hurdle that replicated
those in a horse show. All proceeds from the fundraising tables went to the
American Cancer Society.
Later in the night was the Luminaria event, in which walkers decorated bags
dedicated to loved ones who have battled cancer. The bags were lit with candles
and placed around the gym, and Colleges Against Cancer members shared
stories honoring loved ones who have lost the battle.
“The Luminaria ceremony shows why we’re here,” said SUNY Oneonta Colleges
Against Cancer President Maegan Crawford. “We remember people who lost, we
honor people who are still fighting, and we give hope to people. It’s a hard
ceremony, but it’s the reason we do it.”
Crawford said the best part of Relay for Life is that it brings together people of all backgrounds to fight for the
same cause.
“It’s inspiring to see this many people gathered for one thing: we don’t ever want to hear the word cancer
again,” she said. “It gives me hope that one day we’ll be able to fix that problem.”
