General Info
-very under-served community
-medium sized families many are female led
-Community has experienced quite a few violent incidents in the last 6 years.
-very diverse
-fair size youth population
- one community organization in community
-lots of space- e.g. Rec room, daycare
-Close to Dundas Gooch, Woolner, Mabelle Cluster
-One agency working closely in the Community- Break Away Relief
-Four Villages is 20 minute walk from the community.
-Community is not as easily accessed by transit (busses do not run very frequently)
-Mix of Rent geared to Income units and market rent units.
-Work will need to be done bringing the space up to AODA standards for working spaces.
My time will be freeing up in the next couple weeks so we can start to move forward more quickly. I have looped in my colleague Cleverene that works out of the West directorate on economic development. I would like her to be involved in the conversation moving forward. I think we should meet to discuss the next steps maybe even do a site visit. This is a very exciting initiative, one that could be replicate at different TCH sites across the city.
Residents feedback:
Any questions relating specifically to the tenants’ needs, priorities, etc, should be done in a collaborative process with the community, so as the project proceeds we should undertake a community needs assessment to determine their major priorities as related to economic development and training. Statistical info eg, avg family size etc will need to be sourced (we can get back to you by the end of next week), please confirm you still need this.
There were questions around residents ability to pay, I think this will need to be discussed, I am interested in approaches where costs are subsidized for participants, perhaps with a graduated system of fees, as the participants begin to generate income.
