Anchorage of Non Structural Components Such as Water Heaters
Non-structural components weighing greater than 400 pounds, subject
to a few specific exemptions, require permanent anchorage. Therefore, water
heaters 40 gallons or larger will typically require anchorage. Also, in some
jurisdictions, code requires that even smaller units must be anchored. Check
with your local jurisdiction with regards to equipment anchorage, or refer to
ASCE 7-10 Chapter 13; 2013 CBC Sections 1613 and 1616A; and 2012 IBC
Section 1613.
