December 2014
This letter is to formally recognise Vu Toan Doan as a participant of the Griffith
Mates program for 2014.
The Griffith Mates program is an integral component of Griffith University’s English Language
Enhancement Strategy (GELES). GELES is a multidimensional approach to ensuring that all students
have the opportunity to develop their English language communication skills through both formal and
informal learning opportunities. Griffith Mates comprises 100 students across the five Griffith
University campuses selected for their demonstrable leadership qualities, personality and willingness
to contribute to the enhancement of the experience of both domestic and international students.
Once selected to be a Griffith Mate, all of the students complete an extensive training program to
provide them with the knowledge and support to succeed in the respective roles they will take on
throughout the year. The two day training retreat that all Mates attended at the beginning of the year
focused on developing their relationship building and leadership skills.
While supporting the initial transition and orientation of new international students is a primary focus
for the Griffith Mates, the program continues throughout the academic year and requires a large
commitment of time and leadership from all involved. Activities offered by Griffith Mates this year have
included activities around Orientation Week (in both semesters), as well as The Amazing Race,
Universal Feast, International Trivia Quiz, Global Connections Night, Beach Care, Bush Care and a
number of day trips to local places of interest. As well, a number of events related to Harmony Week
(celebrating a multicultural society) were run, as were activities marking different cultural and faith-
based days.
A number of the Griffith Mates also take on specific roles that contribute to the running of the Program,
while others have the opportunity to develop work-related skills, volunteer and assist in the hosting of
international visitors to the University. Many also participate as mentors in the Griffith University
Buddy Program, aiding in the transition of new international students.
On behalf of the University, I can truly say that the student experience and campus life is richer for the
willingness of all involved in the Griffith Mates program to give their time and provide leadership in a
number of areas. At the same time, the University is able to offer students from a variety of cultural
and linguistic backgrounds the opportunity to engage more fully in Australian life and develop their
own communication skills.
Yours sincerely
