3. HELLO!
As a designer I love creating fresh modern products with a
focus on simplicity and functionalism. My goal is to strive for
a balance between these elements while giving each product a
statement and emotion of its own.
5. Problem
Anxiety Disorders and Posttraumatic Stress are two forms of mental illness on the rise affecting
over 47 million people in the US. Mental Illness, also known as the “silent illness,” often goes
untreated due to the stigma that is associated with it. Like any other illness, untreated it gets
worse not better. If treatment is not consistant or goes untreated it may lead to isolation, social
dysfunction, suicide or even homocide.

Market
The Market is focused on
products and apps that determine
the source of anxiety by emotion
recognition software.
There are few products available
that treat an onset anxiety attack
and ground an individual through
emotional distress.

6. Research
Over time rhythmic movements and
bilateral stimulations have been
proven to relax and create a sense
of calmness when in emotional
distress. For example meditation,
walking, music, even watching the
ocean are all examples of these
calming tools.
Scientific research, in the past,
has proven talk therapy as the
most successful treatment , that
is until recently. By combining Eye
Movement Desensitization and
Reprocessing (EMDR) with talk
therapy there has ben a proven
success rate 30-50% greater than
talk therapy alone.
EMDR is a traumatic memory
processing therapy that
incorporates a dual stimulation
by using either bilateral eye
movements, tones, taps or
vibrations. For my product I focus
solely on the vibration stimuli.

Solution
To design a non-intrusive wearable accessory to assist in controlling an anxiety attack using the
same stimulation successful in EMDR therapy.
Key elements
- Tactile Bilateral Stimulation- Vibrating Pods
- Nonintrusive
- Wireless
- Long Battery Life
- Aesthetically Pleasing
- Minimal form
- Small in size

Market Research
Air purifiers and particle counters
on the market today focus on
air quality through filtration
systems, color displays and/or
particulate size. Nothing informs
the homeowners on “what” is
in the air, “where” the source is
located in the home or assistance
on tracking symptoms.

13. User Interface KeyShot and Photoshop
Clarity is a smart home system designed to inform and assist individuals
with asthma and allergies. It informs homeowners on air quality, defines
what particulates are in the air and keeps track of symptoms through
interactive bluetooth technology. Whether you’re home or away, Clarity will
always keep you updated. Recieve messages of problems via phone, tablet,
mac / pc or simply check the status of your home by opening the Clarity
app to access all the details and reports on your home and symptoms.

Market Research
The French Press is a key product to
brewing coffee in its purest form. It
creates a deep, dark, flavorful brew.
Unforturnately, for an active beginner
it creates confusion. During a recent
survey the biggest set backs were
knowing proper measurements, tracking
the brew time and not consuming the
loose grounds left in the cup while on
the go.
Solution
Redesign the French Press for the modern, active entry level enthusiast with the ability to take it
on the go without much attention when brewing.
Key Features
- measurement guides
- timer
- containment and easy removal of loose grounds
- clean modern appeal
- functional with limited parts

Maquette created using Rapid Prototyping processes.
This maquette is of Tobble, a character designed for an animated short written by Shannon Araiza.
He is a comical, free spirited sidekick who tries to show all of his magical powers, but is never
believed due to his extreme clumsiness. It is a story of true strength and belief that anything is
possible as long as you put your mind to it.

31. Design Brief
As a 5 man design team, create a product using sustainable materials that provides a service to
the public.
Our focus is to design a functional, self-sustaining bus stop for the greater Seattle area. Its
service would not only provide shelter but also use the natural elements to power itself through
wind, solar and hydroelectric energy. The goal is to utilize local materials found within the area
to eliminate the carbon footprint of transporting, fabricating and maintaining the structures. All
the while brining influences of nature to the structure to create a zen appeal easing the stress of
commuting.
Key Elements
- locally sourced materials
- self-sustaining
- easily constructed and maintained
- provides service: shelter, information, power
- aesthetically pleasing
- calming to eliminate commuting stress
- open space for easy navigation
Materials
High-efficiency Concrete Formwork Technology
- Highly sustainable using recyclable sand and wax casting
- On site casting reduces the fuel required for transport
- Cast is non-repetitive and can create free-form concrete structures
Locally Reclaimed Wood
- Unique in appearance
- Strong and stable
- Reduction in manufacturing costs and carbon footprint
Steel
- structural elements
