1. The OldTestament and Jesus Christ –7th
June 2016
“But he was pierced for our transgressions, hewas crushed forour iniquities;the punishmentthat
broughtus peace was on him,and by hiswoundswe are healed.( Isaiah53:3).
There are many Old Testament prophecies about Jesus Christ. Some interpreters place the
number of Messianic prophecies in the hundreds. We have selected the following that are
considered the clearest for better understanding for the reader.
Firstwe can beginwith Jesus’birth where we canlearnin Isaiah7:14, “Therefore the Lord himselfwill
give youa sign:The virginwill be withchildand will give birthto a son,and will call him
Immanuel.”We canalsolearnfrom Isaiah9:6, “For to us a childisborn, to us a son isgiven, andthe
government will be on hisshoulders. And he will be calledWonderful Counselor,MightyGod,
EverlastingFather, Prince ofPeace.” Furthermore we canalsolearnfrom Micah5:2: “But you,
Bethlehem Ephrathah, thoughyou are small amongthe clansof Judah, outof you will come for me
one who will be ruler over Israel, whose originsare from ofold, from ancient times.”
Secondwe learn aboutTestamentpropheciesof Jesus'ministryanddeath whichwe canread in
Zechariah9:9: “Rejoicegreatly, O Daughter ofZion! Shout,Daughter of Jerusalem!See, your king
comes to you, righteous andhavingsalvation, gentleandridingon a donkey, ona colt, the foal ofa
donkey.” We can readagain from Psalm22:16-18: “Dogshave surroundedme; a band ofevil men has
encircled me, they have pierced my handsand my feet. I can count all my bones; peoplestare and
gloatover me. They dividemy garments amongthem and cast lotsfor my clothing.”
Likelythe clearestprophecyaboutJesusisthe entire53rdchapter of Isaiah.Of same,especiallymade
clearerto usas we findin Isaiah53:3-7, “He was despisedand rejected by men,a man of sorrows, and
familiarwithsuffering.Like one fromwhom men hide their faceshe was despised, andwe esteemed
himnot. Surely he took up our infirmitiesandcarried our sorrows, yet we consideredhim stricken by
God,smitten by him, andafflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions,he wascrushed for our
iniquities;thepunishmentthat broughtus peace was uponhim, andby his woundswe are healed. We
all, like sheep, have goneastray, each of ushas turned to his ownway; and the LORD has laidonhim
the iniquityofus all.He was oppressedand afflicted, yet he did notopen his mouth;he was led like a
lambto the slaughter, andas a sheep before her shearers issilent,so he didnot open hismouth.”
Furtherto above we can readwhere itaccuratelydescribesthe beatingthatJesusenduredaswe
observe in Isaiah50:6, “Ioffered my back to those whobeat me, my cheeks to those who pulledout
my beard; I did not hidemy face from mockingandspitting”. Thenwe can alsoread through Zechariah
12 that predictsthe “piercing”of the Messiah, andthe mourning‘forhimas one mournsfor an only
child, andgrieve bitterly’ - whichoccurredinthe worldafterJesuskilledonthe cross. We can learnthis
fromZechariah 12:10 “AndI will pour out on the houseof David andthe inhabitantsofJerusalema
spiritofgrace and supplication.Theywill lookon me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn
for himas one mournsfor an onlychild, and grieve bitterly forhim as one grieves for a firstbornson”.
As Christianssome mayhave learntof the “seventysevens”prophecyinDaniel chapter9that we can
learnfromDaniel 9:22-25, “He instructedme andsaidto me, “Daniel,I have now come to give you
insightandunderstanding. 23
Assoonas you beganto pray, a word went out, whichI have come to tell
2. you,for you are highlyesteemed. Therefore, considerthe word andunderstandthe vision: 24
“Seventy

transgression,toput an end to sin,to
atone for wickedness,to bringin everlastingrighteousness,to seal up visionandprophecy andto

“Knowandunderstandthis:From the time the wordgoes out to restore
and rebuildJerusalemuntil the AnointedOne,the ruler, comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’andsixty-
