1. The SecondComing – 16th
November 2015
"At that time the signof the Son of Manwill appear in the sky, andall the nationsofthe earth will
mourn. They will see the Sonof Man comingonthe cloudsofthe sky, withpower and great glory"
(Matthew 24:30).
The secondcomingof JesusChrististhe hope of all believersthatGodis incontrol of all things, andis
faithful tothe promisesandprophecies thatisfound inHisWord. In Hisfirstcoming,JesusChristcame
to earthas a babyin a mangerinBethlehem, justasprophesied.Jesusfulfilledmanyof the prophecies
of the MessiahduringHisbirth,life,ministry,death,andresurrection.However,there are some
propheciesregardingthe MessiahthatJesushasnot yetfulfilled. The secondcomingof Christwillbe the
returnof Christto fulfill theseremainingprophecies.InHisfirstcoming,Jesuswasthe sufferingServant.
In Hissecondcoming,Jesuswill be the conqueringKing.InHisfirstcoming,Jesusarrivedinthe most
humble of circumstances.InHissecondcoming,Jesuswillarrive inHisMajestyand withthe armiesof
heavenatHis side.
The Old Testamentprophetsdidnotmake clearlythisdistinctionbetweenthe twocomings.Thiscanbe
seeninIsaiah7:14 - “Therefore the Lord himselfwill giveyou a sign:The virginwill conceive andgive
birth to a son,and will call him Immanuel. Immanuel meansGodwithus.Againwe canlearnfrom
Isaiah 9:6 -“Forto us a childis born,to usa son is given, and the government will be on hisshoulders.
And he will be called Wonderful Counselor,MightyGod, EverlastingFather,Princeof Peace. Many
Jewishscholars atthe time believedtherewouldbe bothasufferingMessiahandaconqueringMessiah.
What theyfailedtounderstandisthatthere isonlyone MessiahandHe wouldfulfill bothroles.Jesus
fulfilledthe role of the sufferingservant whichwe canlearnwhere the prophetIsaiahstates:3
Hewas
despisedand rejected by mankind, a man ofsuffering, andfamiliarwithpain. Like one fromwhom
people hidetheir faces he was despised, and we held himin lowesteem.4
Surely he took up our pain
and bore our suffering, yet we consideredhim punishedbyGod, stricken by him,and afflicted.5
Buthe
was pierced for our transgressions, hewas crushed forour iniquities; the punishmentthatbrought us
peace was on him, and by hiswoundswe are healed” (Isaiah53:3-5).
In His firstcomingJesusfulfilledthe role of the delivererasstatedabove andas A KinginHis second
coming.Jesusarrival as Kingcan be learnedthroughthe followingpassages:In Zechariah12:10 “AndI
will pour out onthe houseof David andthe inhabitantsofJerusalem a spiritof grace andsupplication.
They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mournfor him as one mournsfor an
onlychild, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves fora firstbornson”. We can learnagain in
Revelation1:7 -“Look,he iscomingwith the clouds, and “every eye will see him, even those who
pierced him”;and all peopleson earth “will mournbecause ofhim. Soshall it be! Amen”. These
statementsare descriptive of the secondcoming…lookbacktothe twoprophecies statedattwo
completelydifferenttime frames of Jesusbeingpierced. ItalsostatesthatIsrael, andthe whole world,
will mournforNOT havingacceptedthe Messiahthe firsttime He came!
One may wantto knowwhy it isimportant... AsforChristiansthe belief inthe SecondComingof Christ
isimportantbecause itisclearlywhatthe Bible teaches.Todoubtthe realityof the SecondComingisto
doubtthe reliabilityandvalidityof God'sWord. We must alsoknow that the SecondComingis
importantbecause JesusHimself promisedit. We can learn inreference to same inMatthew24 : “But
aboutthat day or hour no one knows, not even the angelsinheaven, nor the Son, but onlythe Father.
37
As it wasin the days of Noah, soit will be at the comingof the Son of Man” (Matthew24:36-37). The
2. SecondComingof Christisour hope and confidence thatGodisincontrol of all thingsand isfaithful to
His Word andHis promises. Therefore we canlearnfrom Titus2:13, "…whilewewait for the blessed
hope - the gloriousappearingofour great Godand Savior,JesusChrist." The SecondComingisalso
importantbecause itwill come atthe time whenthe worldismostin needof a righteousKing.
Revelationchapters6-18describe the endtimespriortothe SecondComingof Christ. The worldwill be
devastated, millionsof people will perish, andthe mostevil personinall historywill be rulerof the
entire world. Withthe SecondComingof Christ itputsall thisto an end.
PerhapsforChristians, noeventinthe historyof the worldhasbeenmore anticipatedthanthe Second
Comingof Christ.Everygenerationof believers,hasstronglybelievedthatJesuswouldreturnintheir
lifetime. Butwe canlearnin 2 Thessalonians2:1-2, "Concerningthe comingof our Lord JesusChrist
and our beinggathered to him,we ask you, brothers, not to become easilyunsettled or alarmedby
some prophecy, report or letter supposedtohave come from us, sayingthat the day ofthe Lord has
alreadycome." Eventodaysome are mistakenlyfrightenedthattheyhave missedthe SecondComing.
Othersdoubtthat itwill everoccur as statedin 2 Peter: "They will say,'Where is this "coming" he
promised?Ever sinceour fathers died, everything goes on asit has since the beginningofcreation" (2
Peter 3:4). Eventodaywe can read where some state that the SecondCominghasalreadyoccurred, and
some others believingthatthe SecondComingwill neveroccur. AsChristianswe mustcarefullyavoid
bothextremes.Furthermore, manyBible teachershave made guessesasto whenthe Rapture and
SecondComingwill occur.Theyhave all beenincorrect. Aswe have readabove, the Bible declares, "No
one knows aboutthat day or hour, not even the angelsin heaven, nor the Son,but onlythe Father"
(Matthew 24:36).
As Christians asfaithful believersinJesusChrist,we should nottryto setdatesand times, butlive our
livesinkeepingwithGod’steachingsforus asthe Secondcomingcouldhappenanyday,any moment…
any second. Therefore the importantmessageforanyChristianistoask oneself:“AmI readyforthe
SecondComingof Christ?
"At thattime the signof the Son of Man will appearinthe sky, andall the nationsof
the earth will mourn.Theywill seethe Sonof Man comingon the cloudsof the sky,
withpowerandgreat glory" (Matthew 24:30).
