Don’t Be Threatened by Workplace Violence
Learn to spot the dangers, avoid the risks and report the threats. Mandatory
training begins this month to teach you how.
It can start with menacing behavior or indirect threats — “He better shut up if he know what’s good for
him!”
It can escalate to slammed doors, thrown objects, deteriorating behavior and signs of withdrawal.
Before it’s over, someone could get hurt. Perhaps seriously. Even fatally.
It’s workplace violence, a very real problem in offices and job sites across America.
At the beginning of this year, the publication Security Director News surveyed security practitioners
throughout the U.S. to determine their top concerns for 2009. The No. 1 worry was violence in the
workplace, cited by 49% of the respondents. Always a concern even in good times, violence can be
even more of a workplace issue when the economy sours and unemployment rises.
HSBC – North America takes the issue of violence and the safety of its employees very seriously.
That’s why we have a Workplace Violence Prevention Policy and employees are required to take
annual web-based training to learn about the warning signs of workplace violence and the proper
procedures for reporting it.
This year’s training for U.S. employees begins this month. You’ll receive an e-mail in the next few
days to tell you about the course, Workplace Violence Awareness Web-Based Training, and how
to access it. You’ll have until September 30 to complete the training.
The interactive class will explain:
● How to identify violence in the workplace
● The common causes and effects of violent behavior at work
● That offenders can be more than just current or former employees
● Ways to recognize the warning signs of violence
● How to report an incident and whom to call
Workplace safety is everyone’s responsibility. By completing the Workplace Violence Awareness
Web-Based Training, you’ll learn how to better protect yourself and your co-workers if a threat
arises. You can also learn more by visiting the Workplace Violence Prevention page on the Security &
Fraud Risk intranet site.
Watch your e-mail. Take the training. Do your part to maintain a safe work environment.
