1. “Respirable Crystalline Silica Testing”
Manhattan, New York
On October 30th, Environmental
Planning & Management presented its
procedure and findings at the
Environmental, Health, Safety, and
Sustainability Conference. The
conference focused on current
environmental issues in the
metropolitan area. With 27 years of
experience in New York, EPM
contributes towards the remediation of
hazardous materials of various capital
projects in the Architectural,
Engineering, & Construction industry.
On behalf of Environmental Planning
& Management, Judah Lebow chose to
talk about EPM’s continued efforts of
providing silica testing throughout
New York City.
Methods of removing, repairing, or
altering existing concrete structures
have the potential of producing vast
quantities of respirable dust. Any
mechanical disturbance of concrete
will pose a silicosis hazard for exposed
workers.
In response to deteriorating concrete
infrastructure from Hurricane Sandy,
New York City Transit’ Environmental
Engineering required Environmental
Planning & Management to perform
repirable crystalline silica sampling at
work sites and stations associated
with the East River Underwater
Tubes.
EPM’s efforts have provided worker
protection and material containment
during silica generating activities.
Furthermore, EPM adhered to State
and Federal safety standards to
ensure compliance with all
construction activities.
The focus of this session was to
present EPM’s procedure for
conducting silica sampling and the
associated findings.
