UNDER THE PALM TREE°
A highly experienced veteran in the edible oils and fats business arena, Mr. Tharumarajah
Thillarajah (Mr. TT as he is known) took some time out of his busy schedule to answer some
questions for us…
Send us your
feedback!
Q: Tell us something about yourself, the person behind the professional?
I was born in a family of eleven siblings with me being the second eldest. My father passed away in 1972 when I was
25 years old. I was then just employed as a Trainee Engineer in Sime Darby Plantations. This untimely death was
devastating and also shocked the entire family. My father who worked as a conductor in the plantations had no
savings. My eldest sister (who was a teacher) and I were the only working members at that time and the rest were
either studying or very young. So my responsibilities began at a very young age to financially support them and
assume the leadership role. This forced situation, I strongly believe moulded me with vital key attributes of
compassion, hard-work and discipline to excel in my career path.
As for my education, I studied at Holy Methodist, Teluk Intan and Anderson, Ipoh before pursuing Engineering at the
University Technology, Malaysia.
I am blessed with a wonderful wife and two children. My son is a so ware engineer and my daughter a pharmacist.
Both are married. I have a 3 year old grandson who is giving me a tough time and a new zest for life.
Q: You come across as a serious personality, what would you consider the lighter side?
Looks can be deceiving... Those who are fairly close to me know that I am a very approachable and helpful
person. I prefer to keep a low key and avoid hogging the limelight.
On the serious side, I am a disciplinarian and a strong advocate of punctuality.
Q: Work comes across as a passion for you, what are your other interests?
I used to be an ardent golfer and have played competitive golf for many years with very low single handicap. I have won numerous major
trophies. Except for a few that are being displayed at home, most of them are gathering dust in some remote corner of the storeroom.
I was also forced into game fishing by my former Scottish boss. Investment was high in game fishing gear and travel to these game fishing spots was
costly. However, it is an experience that to date I will not forget and talk passionately about to budding anglers.
Generally, I love outdoor activities. These days I exercise by walking and mountain hiking.
I love to read fiction, my favourite author being John Grisham.
Q: Having been in the industry for many years, give us an overview of your experience?
I started my career as a Trainee Engineer with Sime Darby in 1971 and have held various positions such as Workshop Manager, Senior Estates
Engineer, Rubber Technologist, Cocoa Technologist, Project Manager and General Manager. Sime Darby being a Global company, I was posted to many
countries on specific assignments and as part of my career development. This included England, Ireland, Tanzania, Mozambique, Egypt, Turkey, India,
Bangladesh, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. This was a great global exposure and I was fortunate to grow in Sime Darby with their well-cra ed
career development programmes. This included attending Ashridge Management College (UK) and the Senior Management Development Programme
conducted by Harvard Business School (USA).
I retired as General Manager of Kempas Edible Oil Sime Darby, a leading manufacturer of edible oils and fats in 2001. I worked as Business Consultant
for a while before joining a German Industrial Floor Specialist company as CEO Malaysia in 2003 and le in 2007 to join as CEO of Premium Nutrients
Berhad (PNB). With the acquisition of PNB by Goodhope in 2011, my Journey with Goodhope continues as the Business Development Director.
Q: What would you consider the highlights of your career?
There have been many highlights, having worked in various positions spanning over more than 40 years. However the one that stays vivid in my mind
is the assignment I did with Asian Development Bank in 1990, specifically because this taught me many lessons. I was selected as a team member
from Malaysia to work with 8 specialists from different parts of the world. The assignment was to visit several provinces in Papua New Guinea to
evaluate the potential of growing rubber and setting up processing facilities. The aim was to elevate poverty but also to be technically feasible,
economically viable and socially desirable. My assignment was as Processing Specialist and our team leader was an economist from Scotland.
The difficult part of the assignment was the travel to remote geographical locations involving road travel in four wheel drives on abandoned earthen
timber tracks that were always bumpy and bone-jarring. We also had to travel in crocodile infested rivers in shallow traditional canoes and this was
scary. Sometimes we also travelled using old Second World War Korean planes and airstrips built by the Christian monasteries. All in all, every journey
was an adventure! I would say it was somewhat like what you would see in the Discovery Channel programmes today.
In spite of the many difficulties, it was a life changing experience for me, where the teamwork and leadership taught me such things as endurance,
tenacity, compassion, self-motivation as valuable lessons.
Q: What are the areas you see as key success factors for the edible oils and fats segment of Goodhope?
As the edible oils and fats business is a growth business, the demand will grow with the increasing global population, economic growth, changing
demographics and changing eating habits. I see that Premium is well placed to participate in this growth, particularly with our product portfolio, cost
efficiencies, technical capabilities and the marketing strength that provide us with a competitive edge.
Being in the food business and an ingredient supplier to the chocolates, bakery and ice cream manufacturers, it is vital that we keep pace with the
ever changing food trends. This will require the need to provide technical solutions and customise our products to meet their needs and add value for
these manufacturers. With our recently established state of the art R&D Innovation Centre, we will move to this higher tier to stay competitive.
In the future I see the edible oils and fats business evolving to become a key business for the Goodhope Group.
Q: Last but not least, a thought or belief you would share with our readers?
Passion is absolutely necessary to grow your career. You have to develop the optimism and energy levels to perform. It has a
multiplier effect. Career is a marathon. Don’t stop pedalling and you will see yourself growing with the Goodhope Group
which has clear corporate goals and the passion to grow.

STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART°
A Sudden Recollection!
by Birendra Gabadamudalige
So anyway, fast forwarding to the first interval bell in school,
I find myself running to the school tuck-shop to purchase a
delightful ‘ice packet’ (you know, those deadly concoctions of
saccharin <probably> and embalming agent – formaldehyde
– <supposedly> that have one purpose and that is to kill
young, unsuspecting kids such as I, or so I was told every
morning by mother dear, who repeatedly emphasized that I
am NOT To buy ‘that garbage’ if I want to live long enough to
see lots of 5 rupees; plural. But today I was feeling like doing
as I please. Hmph!)
Upon producing my salvaged token of perceived value, I get
a huge guffaw from the daunting lady behind the counter,
who swi ly presses the coin back onto my palm. I protest, <in
Sinhala> “But... But... What about my ice packet?” She says,
“What is this? This is 5 cents, dear child”, to which I counter,
“Then what CAN I buy with this?” At that point, she studied
me for a split second as if in disbelief of my apparent
ignorant-and-such-greedy-guts attributes and responds,
“NOTHING! Move along!”
It was then, amidst feelings of catching fire out of
embarrassment and lack of ‘ice’ to cool me down, that I was
struck by a realization as to how right mother dear was when
she o en claimed that rascals who shirk school-work, opt to
slack off at home all the time and be unpleasant around the
household are punished by unfortunate turns of events as if
directed by some celestial force keeping tabs on each and
every one of us young men. Needless to say, ever since that
slightly embarrassing predicament, I rarely put up a fuss and
a shout when being woken up early for school. And it partly
paid off in the form of a legitimate 5 rupee coin which my
mother most graciously pressed onto my palm every now
and then for being a good Tommy Scout.

“Birendra, (the little boy in the
‘Nileme’ outfit above) shares one of
his experiences as a child... ”
One day, whilst minding my own business, my brain
suddenly decided to take a trip down memory lane and
sort of wrap itself around this incident from way back in
time that was undoubtedly salvaged from a deep,
unchartered abyss within my subconscious. I really don’t
know why. Anyway, here goes:
18 years ago, on a frightfully perfect summer’s day
(‘frightful’ because, during my junior-school-boy era, any
day where the sun was out in all its glory was one to dread
for the very reason of it being too perfect; too perfect to
cook up a convincing excuse to cut school and grab some
extended sleep of course… On the other hand, I used to
love gloomy, rainy days. And I absolutely loved torrential
rain and floods. And curfew. And Poya days. I still do. But I
digress.) I had just about lost a quarrel with my mother
where I had failed to convince her that I was sick enough to
stay back at home (apparently, my feigned coarse voice
and faked sluggish reactions were not all that effective).
So, a er launching a few childish statements of fury and
storming out into the garage (failing which I’d have been
chucked out the door anyway), I noticed something
glistening at my feet. I soon find myself picking up a piece
of copper from the ground.
Upon further inspection I discovered that it had a
prominent figure ‘5’ embossed onto its face. Quite pleased
with the turn of events, I turn to my mother and say <in
Sinhala>, “Ah, today I don’t need your money because I
found my OWN. You can keep yours. Muhahaha!” Little did
I know that the smirk that soon formed on my dear
mother’s face had a silent and sinister resonance to it
that’d eventually send echoes through my brain a little
later on.

HERE AND NOW° ARTICLE FROM THE PROS
Why we have too few women leaders?
Number one: Sit at the table
Women systematically underestimate their own abilities. Women do
not negotiate for themselves in the workforce. A study in the last
two years of people entering the workforce out of colleges showed
that 57 percent of boys entering, or men, are negotiating their first
salary, and only seven percent of women. And men attribute their
success to themselves, and women attribute it to other external
factors. If you ask men why they did a good job, they'll say, "I'm
awesome, obviously!” If you ask women why they did a good job,
what they'll say is someone helped them, they got lucky, and they
worked really hard. Why does this matter? Because no one gets to
the corner office by sitting on the side, not at the table, and no one
gets the promotion if they don't think they deserve their success.
Wish the answers were easy. “Believe in yourself and negotiate for
yourself. Own your own success.”
An incident took place during a discussion at Facebook to about
100 employees, and a couple hours later, there was a young woman
who works there and she wanted to talk. She said, "I learned
something today. I learned that I need to keep my hand up." She
said, "Well, you're giving this talk, and you said you were going to
take two more questions. I had my hand up with lots of other
people, and you took two more questions. And I put my hand down,
and I noticed all the women put their hand down, and then you took
more questions, only from the men."
Explains how good are we as managers of our companies and our
organizations at seeing that the men are reaching for opportunities
more than women? We've got to get women to sit at the table.
Message number two: Make your partner a real partner.
If a woman and a man work full-time and have a child, the woman
does twice the amount of housework the man does, and the
woman does three times the amount of childcare the man does. So
she's got three jobs or two jobs, and he's got one. Who do you think
drops out when someone needs to be home more? The causes of
this are really complicated.
As a society, we put more pressure on boys to succeed than we do
on our girls. There are men who stay home and work at home to
support wives with careers, and it's hard. We have to make it as
important as a job, because it's the hardest job in the world to
work inside the home, for people of both genders, if we're going to
even things out and let women stay in the workforce. Studies show
that households with equal earning and equal responsibility also
have half the divorce rate.
Message number three: don't leave before you leave.
There's a really deep irony to the fact that actions women are
taking, with the objective of staying in the workforce actually lead
to their eventually leaving. Here's what happens: We're all busy.
Everyone's busy. A woman's busy. And she starts thinking about
having a child, and from the moment she starts thinking about
having a child, she starts thinking about making room for that
child." How am I going to fit this into everything else I'm doing?"
And literally from that moment, she doesn't raise her hand
anymore, she doesn't look for a promotion, she doesn't take on the
new project, she doesn't say, "Me. I want to do that." She starts
leaning back.
Once you have a child at home, your job better be really good to go
back, because it's hard to leave that kid at home. Your job needs to
be challenging. It needs to be rewarding. You need to feel like
you're making a difference. And if two years ago you didn't take a
promotion and some guy next to you did, if three years ago you
stopped looking for new opportunities, you're going to be bored,
because you should have kept your foot on the gas pedal. Don't
leave before you leave. Stay in. Keep your foot on the gas pedal,
until the very day you need to leave to take a break for a child and
then make your decisions. Don't make decisions too far in advance,
particularly ones you're not even conscious you're making.
“Believe in yourself and negotiate for
yourself. Own your own success.”
Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg looks at why a smaller
percentage of women than men reach the top of their
professions - and offers 3 powerful pieces of advice to women
aiming for the C-suite.
Source: http://www.ted.com/talks/sheryl_sandberg_why_we_have_too_few_women_leaders/transcript Picture courtesy: Time
We don’t live in an era where our mothers or our grandmothers lived in,
where career choices for women were so limited. Most of us have grown
up in a world where we had basic civil rights but at the same time we
still do live in a world where some women don’t have them. Despite all
that, we still have a problem and the problem is ‘Women are not making
it to the top of any profession anywhere in the world.
The women face another problem and that is they have harder choices
between professional success and personal fulfillment. The question is,
how can we fix it? ‘Keeping women in the workforce is the answer but
people talk about it a lot and they also have addressed things like
flextime and mentoring programs companies should have to train
women. But the discussion focuses on what we can do as individuals and
what are the messages we need to tell us, the women who work with us,
siblings and daughters.
1) Sit at the table, 2) Make your partner a real partner,
and 3) don't leave before you leave.
