Back to School: Tips to Keep your
Kids Healthy
Being a parent, you want to keep your kids healthy. You practice the same. But at times, the kids
get infected and fall sick in some or the other way, in spite of taking much care. It may leave the
parents startled and make them think as to how can the child get sick when so much care is being
taken? The answer lies nowhere to this question. Germs enter the body of human beings from
everywhere. The air we breathe, the things we touch, and the surfaces we sit and stand on, all of
them have germs in somewhat quantities. Kids must be imbibed with good hygienic habits in
order to maintain cleanliness and be disciplined.
It is the responsibility of the parents to inculcate good habits in them. To keep your kids healthy,
you will need to take some precautions. Educate the kids about the importance of good hygiene,
good habits, sound sleep and some physical activity.
Informing and educating them about the good habits will bring about a change in them.
Here Are Some More Tips To Keep Your Kids Healthy:
1. Instilling Cleanliness Habits
Teaching your kids the importance of cleanliness is a vital step in keeping them healthy. Here’s
how to convey this message to different age groups:
1. Toddlers and Pre-schoolers:
Use playful language and visuals to explain why washing hands before meals and after playtime
is essential. Make it a fun routine by singing a hand washing song or using colourful soap.
2. Elementary School Kids:
Engage them in a conversation about germs and how they spread. Show them how to sneeze into
their elbow, use tissues, and avoid touching their face to prevent infections.
3. Preteens and Teens:
Discuss the link between personal hygiene and self-esteem. Emphasize the importance of regular
showering, brushing teeth, and wearing clean clothes as a way to feel confident and maintain
good health.
2. The Do’s and Don’ts
From a parent’s perspective, it’s crucial to educate your kids about the do’s and don’ts that
contribute to their well-being:
Do: Encourage them to eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins,
and dairy products. Teach them to stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day. Hydration
and proper diet will help to keep your kids healthy.
Don’t: Discourage excessive consumption of sugary snacks, sugary drinks, and junk food.
Explain how these choices can lead to health issues like obesity, tooth decay, and sluggishness.
Do: Promote regular physical activity by engaging in outdoor play, sports, or simply going for a
walk. Explain that exercise is a way to keep their bodies strong and full of energy. Sports and
playing help them refresh, be active and it will also help to keep your kids healthy.
Don’t: Allow excessive screen time. Explain the importance of limiting screen time to preserve
their eye health and promote physical activity.
3. Smart Food Choices at Home
When it comes to maintaining good health, the foundation lies in the food your kids consume at
home. Here’s a rundown of the basic foods they should be eating:
1. Fruits and Vegetables:
Encourage your kids to fill half their plates with colourful fruits and vegetables. These are rich in
essential vitamins, minerals, and fibre that support their overall health. Consumption of proper
food like fruits and vegetables that impart the necessary nutrients, will help to keep your kids
healthy.
2. Whole Grains:
Opt for whole grains like whole wheat bread, brown rice, and whole grain pasta. These provide
sustained energy and are packed with nutrients. Various grains are rich in nutrition. If kids are
exposed to it and developed a taste for the same, it will definitely keep your kids healthy.
3. Proteins:
Include lean sources of protein such as poultry, fish, beans, lentils, and tofu. Proteins are the
building blocks of the body and help in growth and repair. Body repair is often overlooked and
not paid much heed to. It helps to recover at a faster pace when any issues prevail. So higher
proteins in the diet are a must, which help to keep your kids healthy.
4. Dairy or Alternatives:
Ensure they get their daily dose of calcium by consuming milk, yogurt, or fortified plant-based
alternatives. These support bone health and growth. Milk-based products are important to keep
your kids healthy.
4. Navigating the Junk Food Conundrum
While occasional treats are okay, it’s essential to educate your kids about the ill-effects of
excess junk food and sugary treats:
1. Explain Sugar Impact:
Discuss how excessive sugar intake can lead to weight gain, tooth decay, and energy crashes.
Teach them to read food labels to identify hidden sugars. Added sugar products aren’t good for
health needs to be taught to them, and the effects it has on the body should be told by examples of
some known people. It will help them understand better, and not consume much sugar than
needed.
2. Emphasize Moderation:
Teach the concept of moderation when it comes to sugary treats and snacks. Help them
understand that these foods are occasional indulgences, not daily staples.
5. Parenting Hacks for Healthy Eating
Getting your kids to eat healthily can be a challenge, but these hacks can make it easier:
1. Make it Fun:
Turn mealtime into a creative adventure. Create colorful plates with a variety of foods, or make
smiley faces using fruits and veggies. Keep the process fun as kids love different colors, shapes
and sizes. Keep fixture-shapes in order to give shapes-induced meals to the kids.
2. Involve Them:
Take your kids grocery shopping and involve them in meal preparation. When they have a say in
what they eat, they’re more likely to enjoy it.
3. Lead by Example:
Be a role model by making healthy food choices yourself. Kids often imitate their parents’
behaviors. Children have the habit of imitating others, so you can use this to your advantage. This
will keep your kids healthy, and obey you.

In conclusion, the path to keeping your kids healthy involves a combination of education, positive
habits, and a supportive home environment. By teaching them about cleanliness, instilling healthy
eating habits, and explaining the effects of certain food choices, you’re empowering them to
make informed decisions about their well-being. With the right knowledge and guidance, your
kids can embark on a journey of health and vitality, thriving in all aspects of their lives, from the
classroom to the playground and beyond.
