2. INTRODUCTION OF
AIR POLLUTION
Air pollution is the contamination of air due to
the presence of substances in the atmosphere
that are harmful to the health of humans and
other living beings, or cause damage to the
climate or to materials.
3. It is also the contamination of indoor or outdoor surrounding either by
chemical activities, physical or biological agents that alters the natural
features of the atmosphere. There are many different types of air
pollutants, such as gases (including ammonia, carbon
monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrous
oxides, methane and chlorofluorocarbons), particulates (both organic
and inorganic), and biological molecules. Air pollution can cause
diseases, allergies, and even death to humans; it can also cause
harm to other living organisms such as animals and crops, and may
damage the natural environment (for example, climate change, ozone
depletion or habitat degradation) or built environment (for
example, acid rain). Air pollution can be caused by both human
activities and natural phenomena.
4. Environmental pollution on account of air pollution causes respiratory
diseases in children. To minimize the impact of environmental pollution
particularly air pollution, the Government has inter alia taken the
following actions:
1. Introduction of cleaner/alternate fuel like CNG, LPG
2. Planting more trees
3. Promotion of public transport network including Metro
4. Compulsory PUC (Pollution under control) certification of period
driven vehicles which test for carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons
Using Electric Vehicles Planting More Trees Using alternate sources of energy
5. Air Pollution can be reduced by:
• Planting more trees and nurture the ones present
• Minimize Pollution from Cars by using Electric Vehicles, Carpooling, Keeping Car
well serviced
• Using environment friendly vehicles like bicycle to cover short distances
• Using alternate sources of energy like solar energy rather than burning fossil
fuels.
• Using public transport whenever possible
• Using Recycled Products and avoiding Plastics, Politeness
• Keeping Indoor plants
• Using Air Purifiers inside Home and Offices
• Grow Compost from Home Waste
• Print and photocopy on both sides of paper
• Stop burning garbage, paper, dry leaves
• Quit Smoking
• Buying Rechargeable batteries
