Thank you for

What better way to kick off 40 more years of dream holidays

with RCI and trust us to make them even more unforgettable.

and making our 40th
anniversary even more special.

Editor’s Note
Dear RCI®
Members,
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things
you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines,
sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails.
Explore. Dream. Discover”– Mark Twain
Pali Badwal
Managing Director, RCI India
Now, isn’t that a wonderful thought to live by. Recently, I came across an article in a leading daily that said, ‘India
is the fourth most vacation deprived country globally with almost 67% respondents polling in saying that they
took only 15 days of leave in a year’. Far fewer days than what they were entitled to.
I think holidays truly play an important role in providing work-life balance and time with loved ones. Travel also
expands our horizons and gives us a peek into different cultures. Twenty years from now, when you look back,
you want to be able to say that there was much more to your world than just day-to-day existence.
This issue of Endless Vacation® magazine will literally take you on an adventure around the globe. From pristine
South-East Asian beaches (page 38) to Europe’s Ice & Spice – Switzerland & Italy (page 08) and enchanting
Canada (page 18) to vibrant Rajasthan (page 41) we’ve covered it all. In this issue we continue to explore India by
road – this time, we drive up the hills to Munnar and get really close to the tigers at Corbett (page 28). I do hope
these pages will kindle your urge to explore another new place with another exciting RCI holiday.
As a leader in the Timeshare industry, it is important to keep improving and innovating. With this in mind,
in September’14 we organized the Annual RCI Timeshare Conference. A perfect platform for all Timeshare
Developers and Resort Owners, it threw open a new level of possibilities. You can read more on page 26.
We have also improved our website, www.RCI.com, making it more convenient and secure (page 34). So, now,
planning your RCI holiday is even more simple and easy.
As always, we thank you for your continued support and for choosing RCI to discover what the world has to offer.
Here’s wishing you a new year filled with happiness and adventure.

Our vacation at Club Mahindra,
Binsar, nestled in the pristine
Himalayas, came as a blessing in
disguise. The sight of the tall pine
trees and the sound of chirping
birds across our balcony were
mesmerising and calmed our
fatigued nerves.
As a couple, we could spend
quality time with each
other. Kudos to, our activity
manager, who kept our little
girl entertained and eventually
became a good friend of ours.
Based on his recommendation,
we visited the oldest cave on
earth − Patal Bhuvneshwar,
located around 100 km away.
Legend and folklore have it that
A breath of fresh air in Binsar
this 90 feet underground cave
enshrines Lord Shiva and thirty-
three crore Gods. We can surely
never forget the surreal feeling of
experiencing the universe as the
Lord created it. Definitely a sight
we will remember for a lifetime.
We had a wonderful time on
our last trip to Malaysia − good
jungle treks, orangutans,
delicious food, friendly and
fun-loving people.
We visited Borneo, most
probably one of the last few
virgin rainforests remaining on
earth. It is easy to reach and
surely worth a trip. And don’t
miss the pretty Kuching town
and the Sarawak Riverside.

On our visit to Spain, we were
delighted by the resort and the
lovely view our unit offered.
The staff were brilliant and very
attentive to our needs.
The resort facilities like the
swimming pool, were well
maintained and a joy to use. The
shopping facility nearby was a
blessing in disguise. We were at
ease and travelled around Malaga
to Seville and Ronda.
Just one suggestion: the travel
desk could do better if the team
is more available and prompt.
It always makes sense to plan
nearby trips with their help − it is
safer and more convenient.
Indriyajit Sethi

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay
in Europe. A special mention is
due here about the resort and
its staff. We had made a special
request for vegetarian food in
advance and the team took extra
care to provide us delicious
vegetarian cuisine.
The resort is centrally located
near the railway station and
bus depot. So, planning nearby
excursions was a breeze. We
visited Venice, Mantova, Padova,
Abano and Vincenza among
other places. While language is a
bit of a problem at most places,
we managed well.
It is a beautiful place filled with
mountains, fields, wineries,
sprawling villas and natural sites.

History and histrionics have
always danced in a fine rhythm.
And nature has stood magnificently
by, in war and wisdom, time and
timelessness, cutting through the &SpiceIce Definitively,
Europe.
Wish you were here − Europe
I
n a mad potpourri of contrasts that
stretch across the sun-kissed snow
caps of Alpine blues, only to roll into
technicolour palettes of pines and lakes
and chestnut blooms all in a single frame,
volcanic peaks, stoic medieval columns and
cool modernist moods also speak in tones
that amaze.
Presenting Italy and Switzerland – two
dazzling jewels of Europe, famous and
revered and as different as Armani and
Cheese fondue. While one is legendary
for earthly pursuits of glory, the other is
glorious in its unearthly charm.
If the razzamatazz of Imperial Rome and
its mindless scooterists shake up a nerve
or two, the opulence and tranquillity of
Vatican City makes for a heady cocktail.
But move further away and you have the
allure of Venetian gondolas and Adriatic
sands with Florentian sunsets and Chianti
wines cascading into designer Milanese fare
and Da Vinci’s ‘Last Supper’. As for the
mountains, take the high road to heaven
along ski slopes that extend into the Swiss
serenities of chugging cog wheels, fresh
water spouts, well preserved centres of four
rich cultures and a characteristic silence
that is utterly divine. And in spite of
unfailing Swiss precision, if you still
find yourself lost in a dreamland which
you are happy not to leave, we would
only say, “we told you so”.
8 | JAN - JUN 2015 Endless VACATION | 9
danke,
After such exhilaration, we needed the
comforting sanctuaries of local cuisine.
Armed with our Swiss pass, we boarded
trains to Montreux by the lake, laced all
around with cotton-white mountains.
W
hen they say, “wake up and feel the chill winds”, they can mean only one thing –
snow! We did the London-Paris-Geneva trip by Euro Rail and then hopped on
to TGV high-speed trains in Switzerland. The network is so good that even
our remotely situated resort in Geneva was easy to get to. Further, with amazing views of
the countryside passing by in the blink of an eye, the journey itself was picturesque.
And on the bus ride to Trogon, our dreams came alive! With high mountains covered in
snow, quaint stucco cottages dotting the scene and roadsides skirted by multi-coloured
flowers in full bloom, it was a vision!
ZOHER R BANGKOKWALA
Sterling Holidays
The resort didn’t disappoint either. Situated high in the famous
ski region, we were enthralled from the moment we stepped
off the bus 290 snow-paved meters above our accommodation.
But, stepping out of the unfamiliar cold, into the warmth of
the lobby beautifully decorated with Swiss symbols, was also
welcome. Soon, with the help of the staff, we had an exciting
itinerary planned for this gorgeous wonderland.
More mountain trails
With 20,000 km of rail,
bus and boat routes, the
marvels of Matterhorn and
Jungfrau only need some
extra time on your plan.
Pleasantly peasant
Farming being prime, Swiss cuisine is
essentially about milk products, potatoes
and meat. Chocolates remain the glory,
but for a hearty meal, try the papet
vaudois, rÖsti or cheese fondue,
for vegetarian bliss.
Meat fonds can choose from a host
of sausage classics. The eternal
combination of veal with mushrooms and
crème sauce is lip-smacking delicious.
The allure of the snow was too great
and as soon as we freshened up at our
beautifully appointed holiday apartment,
we were back in the open, legs trembling
across a magnificently constructed steel-
knitted wire bridge, to the village beyond.
Not daring to look into the deep valley,
we carried on – the silence broken only by
the sounds of rippling water, far below.
The river-side rocks, covered in snow,
stood as first guard ahead of tall fir trees
standing strong around us.
The bridge made for a truly thrilling
experience and we were better prepared
to handle the sensational Titlis crossing
of Engelberg on the Swiss Alps, where
6o
inclines make for heart-pounding ski
slopes. The descent by foot, in spite of
safe engineering, is a real test of faith.
Wish you were here − Europe

The streets donned a carnival atmosphere
with live music and many road-side
eateries. The short boat ride to our next
train connection was sublime and while
returning, there was another treat –
unexpected snowfall!
And there was more. The three-hour
journey to Zurich, on our way back home,
landed us straight into the check-in counters.
Fantastic! Words cannot do justice to
our wonderful European experience.
Punctuality is everything there and apart
from the sights, this is something we greatly
appreciated. RCI, we look forward to more
and more holidays together.

More than just
pizza and pasta!
Italian food sticks to the basics.
Just a few good ingredients. No more.
The drama unfolds in your mouth as
each element bursts in flavour and
balances the other.
Cover these and you’re sorted
Wine, Cheese, local greens.
Sea fare and poultry. And coffee.
And then, for a true taste of fine arts
as we know it, we stepped away from
gruesome tales of combat and intense
political games into the world of
Michelangelo and Raphael Santi, in the
world’s tiniest country, Vatican City.
The Sistine Chapel, small and seamless,
and its stunning forms in the Raphael
Rooms, were a revelation.
Out in the open, our voyage through
Amalfi coast, Pompeii and Naples
with Mount Vesuvius as the backdrop,
remains an unforgettable memory. Beyond,
Tuscan country sights and the old city of
Florence mesmerised us with its legacy of
renaissance artists like Leonardo da Vinci,
with more of Michelangelo, at the Uffizi
Gallery and Galleria dell’ Accademia.
They were not exaggerating about the
statue of David either, because we were
utterly captivated. Naturally, we didn’t
want to bid goodbye!EV

t was the month of April and we were gearing up for our oncoming adventure in the
land of art and artists, palazzos and villas, umbrella pines and olive groves.
Two flights and a short car ride through picturesque surroundings brought us to our
resort, The Carpedium Roma Golf Club, Rome, a splendid property about 60km from
Fiumicino airport, with golf courses and excellent facilities.
We settled in and decided to first discover Rome. We visited the Trevi fountain, the
ruins of the Roman Forum and the spectacular Coliseum – the largest amphitheatre
of the Roman Empire, one of the wonders of the ancient world and most famous for its
blood-curdling gladiatorial contests. Together with the Circus Maximus, the chariot
racing stadium, it is a fine testimony to the greatness of Imperial Roman architecture and
Flavian engineering.

hielded by some of the world’s oldest mountains from the gambols of the
Arctic, Atlantic and Pacific oceans, caressed by two million lakes holding
one-fifth of the world’s fresh water, rooted in the wisdom of ancient tribal
pasts, bursting with the effervescence of modern sentiment and united in the
myriad hues of world culture, the Canadian palette can be best described as a
limitless buffet of invigorating extremes. From rising escarpments to gushing
waterfalls, endless prairies to impenetrable rainforests and freezing Tundra
winds to the warm blast of a Chinook, it is in the nature of this landscape to
provide for every breath that heaves at the promise of the captivating unknown.

THE WILD WEST
While nature’s most magnificent, pans out
along the British Columbian Pacific front
with Vancouver’s share of grizzly bears
and bald eagles, breathtaking skiing slopes
and rippling lakes, mesmeric hinterlands
and diverse modernity, the slick city scape
is a centre-spread of world-class cuisine
and luxurious lifestyles. The hangover of a
long-gone British regime lives on coveted,
only to give in to the rugged ethnicity
of Vancouver Island’s Mount Rosseau
shooting through a posse of mountains
in the middle of the region’s tribal home.
Moving inwards, Alberta, the land of
Arctic freezes, back country lodges,
Canadian badlands and trophy fishing,
further defies logic with adventure
sporting, extreme climate, urban culture
and prehistoric fossil shales.
WEDGED IN THE MIDDLE
In this plethora of sheer variety, the
central province of Ontario glows afresh.
If Toronto’s mid-town swank peps your
style, Saint Lawrence Seaway leaves you
tranquil along its course in and out of
the Atlantic ocean as far inland as north-
western Thunder Bay. But in the serenity
of Manitoulin Island, the world’s largest
freshwater island with 108 lakes, beware,
you might imagine a halo around you.
TUMMY TREATS
Tuck in to a hearty Poutine and set
a date to discover the uniqueness of
Sanguenay-Lac-St-Jean on the fjord.
CANADIAN ROCKIES
The famous, mighty peaks sport a special
flavour every season. Dotted with Alpine
villages, wild flora and fauna and rejuvenating
hot springs, you could ogle forever. Or you
could test your adventurous belly to the hilt.
Grizzly Bears
Fantastic to look at from
a distance, you wouldn’t
want to share your beach
chair with one. These burly
bears live in the mountains
surrounding Vancouver and
its suburbs.
EAST PARADE
Moving spiritual highs into Atlantic shores
is historical Quebec with outstanding
French vistas striking a contrast with
its English-speaking neighbours. And
while Montreal also bears sharp New
England nuances, mountains and rivers
unfold European traditions right into
the charming old town of Quebec city.
Further east, Manitoba’s 110,000 lakes,
exhilarating native territories and boreal
forests blend into a new riot of encounters
at Nova Scotia with Mi’kmaq, French,
Catholic, Acadian, English, Scottish and
Dutch charms, leaving you, even if only
slightly, flooredEV

Timeshare Conference
RCI TIMESHARE CONFERENCE
The 2014 Annual India Timeshare Conference was spearheaded by RCI and commemorated
RCI’s 40th
year anniversary. The conference was an opportunity for more than 150 timeshare
developers and professionals from India, Nepal and Sri Lanka to come together to discuss
how they can, together, make timeshare ownership a pleasurable and rewarding experience.
Held at Averina Beach
RCI Resort ID 5890
(Holiday Inn Resort),
Mobor Beach, Cavelossim, Goa,
the conference was attended by
eminent timeshare professionals
from India and overseas.
The conference was a wonderful
opportunity for existing resort
owners, timeshare marketing
professionals, industry
representatives and even those
contemplating getting into
timeshare, to come together, to
share, learn, collaborate and ideate
about the future of the timeshare
industry in our country.
The conference was also
an opportunity to reward
performance and hard work, with
the Annual Timeshare Awards
marking the culmination of the
two-day conference.
Awards were in the category of
Best Timeshare Resort – Large
category, Best Timeshare Resort
− Mid-category, Best Go-Green
Resort, Best Transformed Resort
and Best Indian Resort.
Rather apt to today’s dynamic
scenario, the theme for 2014’s
Timeshare Conference was,
‘Imagine Possibilities’.
As more and more people opt for
Timeshare as their preferred way
to holiday, discussions centred
around enhancing holiday
experiences, providing a variety
of resort options to cater to the
demands of members who prefer
frequent holiday breaks.
One of the important topics of
discussion was to set-up a strong
regulatory body where the rights
of members are protected and
respected by all industry partners.
Overall the objective was to lay
down a path to provide world
class experience to our members.
The conference agenda further
included sessions covering
timeshare in the context of India
and the international markets,
growth scenarios, panel discussions
and thought-stimulating
discussions on the road map for
the next phase of growth.
T
rue liberty teases from
far away, in a mountain
stream twinkling through
time, a waterfall plunging far and
visions of verdant hills tempting
weary spirits away from the
smog of millions getting
someplace.
Give in, we say! Tank ’er up,
pack a snack, stash the music
and hit the tar!
And between all that hoarse
singing and extra loud laughter,
do keep a look out for the road
sign that tells you to “Stop it or
Cop it” until more exuberant
truckers keep you enthralled
with their arty backs in your face.

The silence of the hills will bring
down your own maverick decibels
down a notch, so torque low as
you wind into the Western Ghats,
undulating into luxurious tea gardens
dipping down and rising again to the
rhythm of the swaying mist.
Stick your face out and feel the fog
settling on the landscape, never losing
gear or letting your eye to wander off
the road ahead, as it turns sharply
and steeply along the immaculate
estate by your side. You may crunch
on the luscious carrots by the roadside
but desist from sauntering into the
manicured plantations – they are out
of bounds, unless, of course, you are
an invited guest.
But look around, and open your
arms to the chill air, far from the
pandemonium 1600 m below.
And just 100 m higher, revel in
the reflections of the gardens, off
the still waters of Mattupetty dam
with over 100 bovine varieties of
livestock mooing free and protected
on the Indo-Swiss farm nearby.
On another side, tranquil trekking
trails deep into the mountains of
Pothamedu and Lockhart Gap
stun with expansive views of
the valley that trundle right into
splendid waterfalls in Attukal
and Nyayamakkad.
Stop and fret only over the choice
of lens as you tilt your camera to
capture velvety lawns dancing into
the exotic horizon of Devikulam
and its rare colours of nature. And
while it will be ten years before the
purple haze of the karunji bloom
takes over the meadows again,
maybe a trout in the mineral-rich
Sita Devi lake, has your name on it.
So, spread out that picnic hamper
and try some angling.
At Rajamala, however, prepare for
the rare spectacle of the Niligiri
Ibex. 2695 m above sea level, over
1300 of these endangered mountain
goats roam the grasslands and Shola
forests of the Eravikulam National
Park. If you’ve known something
more sensational, do write to us.
You know you are in
Munnar when the fresh
scent of crisp mountain
air, laced with a hint of
spice, fills your soul and
all you see around you is
green. In all its forms.

At mile zero, there are four ranges to
explore. For the elusive royal Bengal Tiger
and elephant trails, head to Dikhala.
Disable your flash, wear dull foresty
colours and even if fresh pug marks lead
to nothing, their spectacular setting will
leave you breathless.
From Ramnagar, after bowing to the
power of Garija Devi, and delving deep
into the Kyari village to the east of
the river Kosi, rumble into the Jhirna
thickets where narrow gorges and dense
bamboo make for great hideouts. Ready
or not, there will be a bear to surprise
you, so keep your binoculars close. On
your way out, dabble with Jim Corbett’s
life and works at Dhangari Museum and
remember to pick up a souvenir from the
quirky shops, outside.
A whisker away, abundant Sal forests
and grasses of Bijrani lure with varied
flora camouflaging ferocious creatures
in their wake.
But if it is birds that give your spirits
flight, Durga Devi is where the likes of
the Black Chinned Yuhina and Maroon
Oriele, perch. Whether you spot a tiger
in the woods or not, you might just catch
your tiger of the waters – don’t miss the
Mahaseer fishing camp for a feisty hook
line and sinker.
And skirting the reserve, the Sitabani
buffer zone enthralls with its diversity of
plants and animals, and a temple fabled
as the site where Sita surrendered to
Mother Earth.
Have you surrendered to your call yet?
Set out early and keep a check on your
treads, because much like the dramatic
views that surround Corbett, even the
drive to it tangoes from fast and furious
along the Delhi-Ghaziabad expressway
to rough and unnerving between
Moradabad and Thakurdwar.
With the wind in your hair and your
speedometer scaled out, don’t lose out on
the glory of the mountains zipping past.
In fact, stop often and Instagram away.
Unleash your wild side in
the rugged terrain of the
Uttarakhand Himalayas
as Asia’s oldest established
national park sprawls
across grasslands, marshes,
ravines, forested slopes, a
river and a lake, right into
the composed stance of the
Shivaliks on the south side.

I
f life is meant for the living, there
are few who do it better. Held
together by a colour-fast history,
relentless nightlife, ancient tribal
cultures, enviable sporting surfs and
pristine outdoors, this diverse rainbow
land sprayed pretty in warm Pacific
waters, enthralls across an archipelagic
spread of more than 7,100 islands of
silvery sands, stunning corals, teeming
cities, densely forested mountain crags
and lush rice terraces.
As for its people, there is a delightful
candidness to their appreciation for
what nature has abundantly delivered.
And obsessed with the will to live it
up, the Filipino ethos of ‘so be it’, has
steered the nation, unruffled, past
wars, political strife and numerous
economic challenges, into becoming
a tourism hotspot, tipping scales by
the day. Bespoke in its presentation,
woody bangka by arty jeepeny, here lies
everything you desire.

WATER BABY
The alluring seas around,
astounding marine forms and
daring sporting options that
dive deep underwater or glide
high in the skies above, pack an
exhilarating punch of adventure
right across the gorgeous Visayas.
Of course, the up-market party
beaches of Boracay are quite
something but going further into
Cebu you’ll spot rare thresher
sharks at Mactan. For even more
exotic echoes, reach into the
limitless diversity of Batangas,
Pagasinan and Zambales across
the Luzon region, home to 37
volcanoes of which 18 are still
bubbling and active.
CULTURE COUTURE
Moving north, as if custom-made
for the eye that beholds, pearly
shores and bronze escarpments
give into the emerald highs of
mountain city Baguio and its
orchid moons. The rice terraces
of Banaue are not too far from
here, so do drive up.
LIFE, ASSURED
Philippines is all about its poise
for the wonderful. And capital
city Manila decisively sets the
tone. Blitzy nightlife and haute
couture set against the balance
of Spanish sagas and World War
tales will leave you talking for a
while, so, also consider taking
the boats out the next day, into
unknown worlds where it is just
you and nothing but the ocean
around. At dusk, sunset drapes
over Manila Bay. Make timeEV

TRIBAL TRADITIONS
Zambales comes alive
in January, with the
Feast of the Sacred Stone.
The wind heaves ripples across its endless face
and the Sun shines in glory upon its people.
Colour radiates a festive spirit through mystical notes on valour
and faith. And though eons passed and glory reigned and fell,
the legends stay young and well alive.

Tales of Kings and princesses, wars and victories, truths and deceits, have been the
subject of many a memorable bed-time story. But when you walk the sands of time,
hear the songs of the bard and feel the elegant stone lattice that rises like a mirage
from a grand old age, take a deep breath and believe. The past stays immortal here.
Like the sand under your feet. Or the shimmering sky overhead.

SHEER MAGIC
Warm Thar winds had brought on a sandstorm
and small twisters of sand trailed our car as we set out
that evening. Sunbeams struggled to break through
clouds of dust as the clear-as-crystal sky flashed bright
blue between ever-changing silhouettes of fine sand.
I couldn’t take my eyes off its raw beauty.
Ahead, Kuldhara wore a shroud of mystery.
Abandoned, overnight, by its inhabitants, its spooky
appeal lay in the stories, the ruins, the temple, ancient
homes and even the chattri that stood tall in glorious
golden sandstone. The charisma of a bygone era shone
through intricate detail in carvings, architecture and
aesthetics, as the complex glimmered, like a jewel
encrusted within bare rocks and vast emptiness.
Desert Festival
The annual fest
showcasing all things
Rajasthani, opens on the
1st
of February 2015 and
closes with gusto on the
full moon of the 3rd.
Of sandstorms and the Sun
Searing heat and sharp rays of the Sun welcomed us at Jodhpur airport, as we took in
the dry barren land around us. Yes, we were well and truly in the desert, in the middle
of an unforgiving summer, yet, undeterred by our choice of destination.
Having survived two gruelling years of the 11th and 12th grades, this vacation was really
well-deserved and the newly opened Club Mahindra at Jaisalmer seemed enticing enough.
After a four-hour drive, we pulled into our sprawling, palace-styled resort.
The warm air from the desert was blowing in, and the ground beneath
our feet burned. But a cat-nap in the cool respite of our pool-facing
rooms and a grand spread of sumptuous food made it rather easy to fit
into a routine of running to nowhere and lazing around till the heat
blazed through a little less.

Shoppers’ Haven − Bhatia Market’s narrow
lanes lie to the north of the magnificent fort.
Enjoy!
IMPRINTS IN THE SANDS
As the sun tilted further west, we made our way to the
dunes past brightly clothed camels ambling along, pulling carts or
ferrying passengers on their backs. We took a camel cart too and though
the ride was really bumpy and the sandstorm hampered visibility, the
vastness of the desert was overwhelming. Horizons meet far away, where
no man can possibly go. And at dusk, the sight of light dimming over
high sand dunes melting into complete darkness, took my breath away!
THE GOLDEN TRAIL
Jaisalmer, the Golden City, was built by Rao Jaisal around the 12th
century. Set in its heart, is Rajasthan’s only living fort with people still
thriving within its walls, in proximity to the Maharaja and Maharani’s
imposing palaces, the sati chowk and Jauhar kund – all throw-backs
to times unfathomable today. With stone artisans showcasing their
fine work in statues, roshandaans and other stunning edifices, the Jain
temples bear testimony to the rich merchant culture that kept the royal
treasury, brimming. Outside, exquisite in their craftsmanship, Patwaon ki
Haveli and the Nathmalji ki Haveli make for great picture backdrops.
Lost in the streets of Jaisalmer, stumbling
upon intriguing sandstone facades from
an ancient age, these memories will live
with me foreverEV

  • 3. Thank you for celebrating with us! What better way to kick off 40 more years of dream holidays than by celebrating along with millions of RCI subscribing members worldwide - members who enjoy extraordinary holidays with RCI and trust us to make them even more unforgettable. Thank you for being a part of our year-long celebrations and making our 40th anniversary even more special. We look forward to another eternity together. Editor’s Note Dear RCI® Members, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover”– Mark Twain Pali Badwal Managing Director, RCI India Now, isn’t that a wonderful thought to live by. Recently, I came across an article in a leading daily that said, ‘India is the fourth most vacation deprived country globally with almost 67% respondents polling in saying that they took only 15 days of leave in a year’. Far fewer days than what they were entitled to. I think holidays truly play an important role in providing work-life balance and time with loved ones. Travel also expands our horizons and gives us a peek into different cultures. Twenty years from now, when you look back, you want to be able to say that there was much more to your world than just day-to-day existence. This issue of Endless Vacation® magazine will literally take you on an adventure around the globe. From pristine South-East Asian beaches (page 38) to Europe’s Ice & Spice – Switzerland & Italy (page 08) and enchanting Canada (page 18) to vibrant Rajasthan (page 41) we’ve covered it all. In this issue we continue to explore India by road – this time, we drive up the hills to Munnar and get really close to the tigers at Corbett (page 28). I do hope these pages will kindle your urge to explore another new place with another exciting RCI holiday. As a leader in the Timeshare industry, it is important to keep improving and innovating. With this in mind, in September’14 we organized the Annual RCI Timeshare Conference. A perfect platform for all Timeshare Developers and Resort Owners, it threw open a new level of possibilities. You can read more on page 26. We have also improved our website, www.RCI.com, making it more convenient and secure (page 34). So, now, planning your RCI holiday is even more simple and easy. As always, we thank you for your continued support and for choosing RCI to discover what the world has to offer. Here’s wishing you a new year filled with happiness and adventure. • 4. Letters from Members Dr. Shweta Jain Verma Sterling Holidays Our vacation at Club Mahindra, Binsar, nestled in the pristine Himalayas, came as a blessing in disguise. The sight of the tall pine trees and the sound of chirping birds across our balcony were mesmerising and calmed our fatigued nerves. As a couple, we could spend quality time with each other. Kudos to, our activity manager, who kept our little girl entertained and eventually became a good friend of ours. Based on his recommendation, we visited the oldest cave on earth − Patal Bhuvneshwar, located around 100 km away. Legend and folklore have it that A breath of fresh air in Binsar this 90 feet underground cave enshrines Lord Shiva and thirty- three crore Gods. We can surely never forget the surreal feeling of experiencing the universe as the Lord created it. Definitely a sight we will remember for a lifetime. We had a wonderful time on our last trip to Malaysia − good jungle treks, orangutans, delicious food, friendly and fun-loving people. We visited Borneo, most probably one of the last few virgin rainforests remaining on earth. It is easy to reach and surely worth a trip. And don’t miss the pretty Kuching town and the Sarawak Riverside. Sonia Burman Sterling Holidays On our visit to Spain, we were delighted by the resort and the lovely view our unit offered. The staff were brilliant and very attentive to our needs. The resort facilities like the swimming pool, were well maintained and a joy to use. The shopping facility nearby was a blessing in disguise. We were at ease and travelled around Malaga to Seville and Ronda. Just one suggestion: the travel desk could do better if the team is more available and prompt. It always makes sense to plan nearby trips with their help − it is safer and more convenient. Indriyajit Sethi Club Mahindra We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Europe. A special mention is due here about the resort and its staff. We had made a special request for vegetarian food in advance and the team took extra care to provide us delicious vegetarian cuisine. The resort is centrally located near the railway station and bus depot. So, planning nearby excursions was a breeze. We visited Venice, Mantova, Padova, Abano and Vincenza among other places. While language is a bit of a problem at most places, we managed well. It is a beautiful place filled with mountains, fields, wineries, sprawling villas and natural sites. • 5. History and histrionics have always danced in a fine rhythm. And nature has stood magnificently by, in war and wisdom, time and timelessness, cutting through the &SpiceIce Definitively, Europe. Wish you were here − Europe I n a mad potpourri of contrasts that stretch across the sun-kissed snow caps of Alpine blues, only to roll into technicolour palettes of pines and lakes and chestnut blooms all in a single frame, volcanic peaks, stoic medieval columns and cool modernist moods also speak in tones that amaze. Presenting Italy and Switzerland – two dazzling jewels of Europe, famous and revered and as different as Armani and Cheese fondue. While one is legendary for earthly pursuits of glory, the other is glorious in its unearthly charm. If the razzamatazz of Imperial Rome and its mindless scooterists shake up a nerve or two, the opulence and tranquillity of Vatican City makes for a heady cocktail. But move further away and you have the allure of Venetian gondolas and Adriatic sands with Florentian sunsets and Chianti wines cascading into designer Milanese fare and Da Vinci’s ‘Last Supper’. As for the mountains, take the high road to heaven along ski slopes that extend into the Swiss serenities of chugging cog wheels, fresh water spouts, well preserved centres of four rich cultures and a characteristic silence that is utterly divine. And in spite of unfailing Swiss precision, if you still find yourself lost in a dreamland which you are happy not to leave, we would only say, “we told you so”. 8 | JAN - JUN 2015 Endless VACATION | 9
  • 6. danke, After such exhilaration, we needed the comforting sanctuaries of local cuisine. Armed with our Swiss pass, we boarded trains to Montreux by the lake, laced all around with cotton-white mountains. W hen they say, “wake up and feel the chill winds”, they can mean only one thing – snow! We did the London-Paris-Geneva trip by Euro Rail and then hopped on to TGV high-speed trains in Switzerland. The network is so good that even our remotely situated resort in Geneva was easy to get to. Further, with amazing views of the countryside passing by in the blink of an eye, the journey itself was picturesque. And on the bus ride to Trogon, our dreams came alive! With high mountains covered in snow, quaint stucco cottages dotting the scene and roadsides skirted by multi-coloured flowers in full bloom, it was a vision! ZOHER R BANGKOKWALA Sterling Holidays The resort didn’t disappoint either. Situated high in the famous ski region, we were enthralled from the moment we stepped off the bus 290 snow-paved meters above our accommodation. But, stepping out of the unfamiliar cold, into the warmth of the lobby beautifully decorated with Swiss symbols, was also welcome. Soon, with the help of the staff, we had an exciting itinerary planned for this gorgeous wonderland. More mountain trails With 20,000 km of rail, bus and boat routes, the marvels of Matterhorn and Jungfrau only need some extra time on your plan. Pleasantly peasant Farming being prime, Swiss cuisine is essentially about milk products, potatoes and meat. Chocolates remain the glory, but for a hearty meal, try the papet vaudois, rÖsti or cheese fondue, for vegetarian bliss. Meat fonds can choose from a host of sausage classics. The eternal combination of veal with mushrooms and crème sauce is lip-smacking delicious. The allure of the snow was too great and as soon as we freshened up at our beautifully appointed holiday apartment, we were back in the open, legs trembling across a magnificently constructed steel- knitted wire bridge, to the village beyond. Not daring to look into the deep valley, we carried on – the silence broken only by the sounds of rippling water, far below. The river-side rocks, covered in snow, stood as first guard ahead of tall fir trees standing strong around us. The bridge made for a truly thrilling experience and we were better prepared to handle the sensational Titlis crossing of Engelberg on the Swiss Alps, where 6o inclines make for heart-pounding ski slopes. The descent by foot, in spite of safe engineering, is a real test of faith. Wish you were here − Europe STAY RCI has affiliated resorts across Switzerland. Visit www.RCI.com The streets donned a carnival atmosphere with live music and many road-side eateries. The short boat ride to our next train connection was sublime and while returning, there was another treat – unexpected snowfall! And there was more. The three-hour journey to Zurich, on our way back home, landed us straight into the check-in counters. Fantastic! Words cannot do justice to our wonderful European experience. Punctuality is everything there and apart from the sights, this is something we greatly appreciated. RCI, we look forward to more and more holidays together. 10 | JAN - JUN 2015 Endless VACATION | 11

The drama unfolds in your mouth as each element bursts in flavour and balances the other. Cover these and you’re sorted Wine, Cheese, local greens. Sea fare and poultry. And coffee. And then, for a true taste of fine arts as we know it, we stepped away from gruesome tales of combat and intense political games into the world of Michelangelo and Raphael Santi, in the world’s tiniest country, Vatican City. The Sistine Chapel, small and seamless, and its stunning forms in the Raphael Rooms, were a revelation. Out in the open, our voyage through Amalfi coast, Pompeii and Naples with Mount Vesuvius as the backdrop, remains an unforgettable memory. Beyond, Tuscan country sights and the old city of Florence mesmerised us with its legacy of renaissance artists like Leonardo da Vinci, with more of Michelangelo, at the Uffizi Gallery and Galleria dell’ Accademia. They were not exaggerating about the statue of David either, because we were utterly captivated. Naturally, we didn’t want to bid goodbye!EV SHARMILA CHATTOPADHYAY The Chariot I t was the month of April and we were gearing up for our oncoming adventure in the land of art and artists, palazzos and villas, umbrella pines and olive groves. Two flights and a short car ride through picturesque surroundings brought us to our resort, The Carpedium Roma Golf Club, Rome, a splendid property about 60km from Fiumicino airport, with golf courses and excellent facilities. We settled in and decided to first discover Rome. We visited the Trevi fountain, the ruins of the Roman Forum and the spectacular Coliseum – the largest amphitheatre of the Roman Empire, one of the wonders of the ancient world and most famous for its blood-curdling gladiatorial contests. Together with the Circus Maximus, the chariot racing stadium, it is a fine testimony to the greatness of Imperial Roman architecture and Flavian engineering. CANADAparadise unlimited S hielded by some of the world’s oldest mountains from the gambols of the Arctic, Atlantic and Pacific oceans, caressed by two million lakes holding one-fifth of the world’s fresh water, rooted in the wisdom of ancient tribal pasts, bursting with the effervescence of modern sentiment and united in the myriad hues of world culture, the Canadian palette can be best described as a limitless buffet of invigorating extremes. From rising escarpments to gushing waterfalls, endless prairies to impenetrable rainforests and freezing Tundra winds to the warm blast of a Chinook, it is in the nature of this landscape to provide for every breath that heaves at the promise of the captivating unknown. • 11. THE WILD WEST While nature’s most magnificent, pans out along the British Columbian Pacific front with Vancouver’s share of grizzly bears and bald eagles, breathtaking skiing slopes and rippling lakes, mesmeric hinterlands and diverse modernity, the slick city scape is a centre-spread of world-class cuisine and luxurious lifestyles. The hangover of a long-gone British regime lives on coveted, only to give in to the rugged ethnicity of Vancouver Island’s Mount Rosseau shooting through a posse of mountains in the middle of the region’s tribal home. Moving inwards, Alberta, the land of Arctic freezes, back country lodges, Canadian badlands and trophy fishing, further defies logic with adventure sporting, extreme climate, urban culture and prehistoric fossil shales. WEDGED IN THE MIDDLE In this plethora of sheer variety, the central province of Ontario glows afresh. If Toronto’s mid-town swank peps your style, Saint Lawrence Seaway leaves you tranquil along its course in and out of the Atlantic ocean as far inland as north- western Thunder Bay. But in the serenity of Manitoulin Island, the world’s largest freshwater island with 108 lakes, beware, you might imagine a halo around you. TUMMY TREATS Tuck in to a hearty Poutine and set a date to discover the uniqueness of Sanguenay-Lac-St-Jean on the fjord. CANADIAN ROCKIES The famous, mighty peaks sport a special flavour every season. Dotted with Alpine villages, wild flora and fauna and rejuvenating hot springs, you could ogle forever. Or you could test your adventurous belly to the hilt. Grizzly Bears Fantastic to look at from a distance, you wouldn’t want to share your beach chair with one. These burly bears live in the mountains surrounding Vancouver and its suburbs. EAST PARADE Moving spiritual highs into Atlantic shores is historical Quebec with outstanding French vistas striking a contrast with its English-speaking neighbours. And while Montreal also bears sharp New England nuances, mountains and rivers unfold European traditions right into the charming old town of Quebec city. Further east, Manitoba’s 110,000 lakes, exhilarating native territories and boreal forests blend into a new riot of encounters at Nova Scotia with Mi’kmaq, French, Catholic, Acadian, English, Scottish and Dutch charms, leaving you, even if only slightly, flooredEV STAY RCI has affiliated resorts across Canada. RCI TAKES THE LEAD 42 | JUL - DEC 2014 Pali Badwal Managing Director RCI India Timeshare Conference RCI TIMESHARE CONFERENCE The 2014 Annual India Timeshare Conference was spearheaded by RCI and commemorated RCI’s 40th year anniversary. The conference was an opportunity for more than 150 timeshare developers and professionals from India, Nepal and Sri Lanka to come together to discuss how they can, together, make timeshare ownership a pleasurable and rewarding experience. Held at Averina Beach RCI Resort ID 5890 (Holiday Inn Resort), Mobor Beach, Cavelossim, Goa, the conference was attended by eminent timeshare professionals from India and overseas. The conference was a wonderful opportunity for existing resort owners, timeshare marketing professionals, industry representatives and even those contemplating getting into timeshare, to come together, to share, learn, collaborate and ideate about the future of the timeshare industry in our country. The conference was also an opportunity to reward performance and hard work, with the Annual Timeshare Awards marking the culmination of the two-day conference. Awards were in the category of Best Timeshare Resort – Large category, Best Timeshare Resort − Mid-category, Best Go-Green Resort, Best Transformed Resort and Best Indian Resort. Rather apt to today’s dynamic scenario, the theme for 2014’s Timeshare Conference was, ‘Imagine Possibilities’. As more and more people opt for Timeshare as their preferred way to holiday, discussions centred around enhancing holiday experiences, providing a variety of resort options to cater to the demands of members who prefer frequent holiday breaks. One of the important topics of discussion was to set-up a strong regulatory body where the rights of members are protected and respected by all industry partners. Overall the objective was to lay down a path to provide world class experience to our members. The conference agenda further included sessions covering timeshare in the context of India and the international markets, growth scenarios, panel discussions and thought-stimulating discussions on the road map for the next phase of growth.

You may crunch on the luscious carrots by the roadside but desist from sauntering into the manicured plantations – they are out of bounds, unless, of course, you are an invited guest. But look around, and open your arms to the chill air, far from the pandemonium 1600 m below. And just 100 m higher, revel in the reflections of the gardens, off the still waters of Mattupetty dam with over 100 bovine varieties of livestock mooing free and protected on the Indo-Swiss farm nearby. On another side, tranquil trekking trails deep into the mountains of Pothamedu and Lockhart Gap stun with expansive views of the valley that trundle right into splendid waterfalls in Attukal and Nyayamakkad. Stop and fret only over the choice of lens as you tilt your camera to capture velvety lawns dancing into the exotic horizon of Devikulam and its rare colours of nature. And while it will be ten years before the purple haze of the karunji bloom takes over the meadows again, maybe a trout in the mineral-rich Sita Devi lake, has your name on it. So, spread out that picnic hamper and try some angling. At Rajamala, however, prepare for the rare spectacle of the Niligiri Ibex. 2695 m above sea level, over 1300 of these endangered mountain goats roam the grasslands and Shola forests of the Eravikulam National Park. If you’ve known something more sensational, do write to us. You know you are in Munnar when the fresh scent of crisp mountain air, laced with a hint of spice, fills your soul and all you see around you is green. In all its forms. • 17. At mile zero, there are four ranges to explore. For the elusive royal Bengal Tiger and elephant trails, head to Dikhala. Disable your flash, wear dull foresty colours and even if fresh pug marks lead to nothing, their spectacular setting will leave you breathless. From Ramnagar, after bowing to the power of Garija Devi, and delving deep into the Kyari village to the east of the river Kosi, rumble into the Jhirna thickets where narrow gorges and dense bamboo make for great hideouts. Ready or not, there will be a bear to surprise you, so keep your binoculars close. On your way out, dabble with Jim Corbett’s life and works at Dhangari Museum and remember to pick up a souvenir from the quirky shops, outside. A whisker away, abundant Sal forests and grasses of Bijrani lure with varied flora camouflaging ferocious creatures in their wake. But if it is birds that give your spirits flight, Durga Devi is where the likes of the Black Chinned Yuhina and Maroon Oriele, perch. Whether you spot a tiger in the woods or not, you might just catch your tiger of the waters – don’t miss the Mahaseer fishing camp for a feisty hook line and sinker. And skirting the reserve, the Sitabani buffer zone enthralls with its diversity of plants and animals, and a temple fabled as the site where Sita surrendered to Mother Earth. Have you surrendered to your call yet? Set out early and keep a check on your treads, because much like the dramatic views that surround Corbett, even the drive to it tangoes from fast and furious along the Delhi-Ghaziabad expressway to rough and unnerving between Moradabad and Thakurdwar. With the wind in your hair and your speedometer scaled out, don’t lose out on the glory of the mountains zipping past. In fact, stop often and Instagram away. Unleash your wild side in the rugged terrain of the Uttarakhand Himalayas as Asia’s oldest established national park sprawls across grasslands, marshes, ravines, forested slopes, a river and a lake, right into the composed stance of the Shivaliks on the south side. Held together by a colour-fast history, relentless nightlife, ancient tribal cultures, enviable sporting surfs and pristine outdoors, this diverse rainbow land sprayed pretty in warm Pacific waters, enthralls across an archipelagic spread of more than 7,100 islands of silvery sands, stunning corals, teeming cities, densely forested mountain crags and lush rice terraces. As for its people, there is a delightful candidness to their appreciation for what nature has abundantly delivered. And obsessed with the will to live it up, the Filipino ethos of ‘so be it’, has steered the nation, unruffled, past wars, political strife and numerous economic challenges, into becoming a tourism hotspot, tipping scales by the day. Bespoke in its presentation, woody bangka by arty jeepeny, here lies everything you desire. nature’s own Beach candy is common fare and droning party nights seem like an overkill? WATER BABY The alluring seas around, astounding marine forms and daring sporting options that dive deep underwater or glide high in the skies above, pack an exhilarating punch of adventure right across the gorgeous Visayas. Of course, the up-market party beaches of Boracay are quite something but going further into Cebu you’ll spot rare thresher sharks at Mactan. For even more exotic echoes, reach into the limitless diversity of Batangas, Pagasinan and Zambales across the Luzon region, home to 37 volcanoes of which 18 are still bubbling and active. CULTURE COUTURE Moving north, as if custom-made for the eye that beholds, pearly shores and bronze escarpments give into the emerald highs of mountain city Baguio and its orchid moons. The rice terraces of Banaue are not too far from here, so do drive up. LIFE, ASSURED Philippines is all about its poise for the wonderful. And capital city Manila decisively sets the tone. Blitzy nightlife and haute couture set against the balance of Spanish sagas and World War tales will leave you talking for a while, so, also consider taking the boats out the next day, into unknown worlds where it is just you and nothing but the ocean around. At dusk, sunset drapes over Manila Bay. Make timeEV FLORAL FEBRUARY Catch the floats and music of the extravagant floral parades. TRIBAL TRADITIONS Zambales comes alive in January, with the Feast of the Sacred Stone. The wind heaves ripples across its endless face and the Sun shines in glory upon its people. Colour radiates a festive spirit through mystical notes on valour and faith. And though eons passed and glory reigned and fell, the legends stay young and well alive. But when you walk the sands of time, hear the songs of the bard and feel the elegant stone lattice that rises like a mirage from a grand old age, take a deep breath and believe. The past stays immortal here. Like the sand under your feet. Or the shimmering sky overhead. 40 | JAN - JUN 2015 Endless VACATION | 41
  • 22. SHEER MAGIC Warm Thar winds had brought on a sandstorm and small twisters of sand trailed our car as we set out that evening. Sunbeams struggled to break through clouds of dust as the clear-as-crystal sky flashed bright blue between ever-changing silhouettes of fine sand. I couldn’t take my eyes off its raw beauty. Ahead, Kuldhara wore a shroud of mystery. Abandoned, overnight, by its inhabitants, its spooky appeal lay in the stories, the ruins, the temple, ancient homes and even the chattri that stood tall in glorious golden sandstone. The charisma of a bygone era shone through intricate detail in carvings, architecture and aesthetics, as the complex glimmered, like a jewel encrusted within bare rocks and vast emptiness. Desert Festival The annual fest showcasing all things Rajasthani, opens on the 1st of February 2015 and closes with gusto on the full moon of the 3rd. Of sandstorms and the Sun Searing heat and sharp rays of the Sun welcomed us at Jodhpur airport, as we took in the dry barren land around us. Yes, we were well and truly in the desert, in the middle of an unforgiving summer, yet, undeterred by our choice of destination. Having survived two gruelling years of the 11th and 12th grades, this vacation was really well-deserved and the newly opened Club Mahindra at Jaisalmer seemed enticing enough. After a four-hour drive, we pulled into our sprawling, palace-styled resort. The warm air from the desert was blowing in, and the ground beneath our feet burned. But a cat-nap in the cool respite of our pool-facing rooms and a grand spread of sumptuous food made it rather easy to fit into a routine of running to nowhere and lazing around till the heat blazed through a little less. • 23. Shoppers’ Haven − Bhatia Market’s narrow lanes lie to the north of the magnificent fort. Enjoy! IMPRINTS IN THE SANDS As the sun tilted further west, we made our way to the dunes past brightly clothed camels ambling along, pulling carts or ferrying passengers on their backs. We took a camel cart too and though the ride was really bumpy and the sandstorm hampered visibility, the vastness of the desert was overwhelming. Horizons meet far away, where no man can possibly go. And at dusk, the sight of light dimming over high sand dunes melting into complete darkness, took my breath away! THE GOLDEN TRAIL Jaisalmer, the Golden City, was built by Rao Jaisal around the 12th century. Set in its heart, is Rajasthan’s only living fort with people still thriving within its walls, in proximity to the Maharaja and Maharani’s imposing palaces, the sati chowk and Jauhar kund – all throw-backs to times unfathomable today. With stone artisans showcasing their fine work in statues, roshandaans and other stunning edifices, the Jain temples bear testimony to the rich merchant culture that kept the royal treasury, brimming. Outside, exquisite in their craftsmanship, Patwaon ki Haveli and the Nathmalji ki Haveli make for great picture backdrops. Lost in the streets of Jaisalmer, stumbling upon intriguing sandstone facades from an ancient age, these memories will live with me foreverEV DEVANSHI SHAH Mountain Club STAY RCI has affiliated resorts across Rajasthan.
