Azerbaijan pays special attention to the successful development of aviation. Thus, the new airport terminal, which is being constructed at Heydar Aliyev International Airport, will allow the further enhancement of passenger and cargo services and bring flight safety in line with international standards. The airport complex, which meets modern standards, will be able to serve three million passengers per year. International flights will be carried out from there after the launch of a new four storey building of airport, which will be built in the shape of a triangle. All scientific-technical innovations in international aviation will be implemented in the new complex. A telescopic ladder capable of receiving 13 planes at the same time will be installed. The airports of Baku and Nakhcivan were completely modernized in recent decades. In addition, new domestic airports were opened in the cities of Ganja, Zagatala, Lankaran and Gabala.

In 2012, Azeryolservis JSC under the Ministry of Transport of Azerbaijan has built and repaired 537.2 kilometres of roads of national and local importance. Of the total number of built and repaired roads, 134.6 kilometres were of national significance and 402.6 kilometres were local roads.

The foreign trade turnover with 155 world countries amounted to $33.560 billion in 2012, or 7.61 percent less than in 2011. The volume of exports decreased by 10.02 percent to $23.907 billion compared to 2011. The volume of import decreased by 1.06 percent and hit $9.652 billion. Azerbaijan exported 2,273 products, and imported 6,421 different goods.

During 2012, BP and its partners produced 32.9 million tons (243 million barrels) of oil from Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli oil fields block, according to a BP report on the 2012 results. The daily oil production amounted to 664,400 barrels.

The U.S. Orbital Sciences Corp. handed full control of the first national telecommunications satellite Azerspace/Africasat-1a to Azerkosmos. The period of test operations was completed on April 2, and the satellite is now ready for commercial use. Currently it is controlled by Azerkosmos experts from the head and back control centres.

The volume of exports decreased by 10.02 percent to $23.907 billion compared to 2011. The volume of import decreased by 1.06 percent and hit $9.652 billion. The Nakhchivan automobile plant (NAE) started production of the commercial minibus Nazlifan LF 6401. The carrying capacity is 800 kilogrammes. The minibus seats six besides the driver. The cost of the new model is about 10,500 manats. The warranty covers two years or 40,000 miles.

The Ministry of Transport of Azerbaijan is considering specific proposals and preparing an integrated actions plan on the eve of the first European Games in Baku. According to preliminary information, the main transport hubs at the event, which will be attended by 49 countries, will be Heydar Aliyev International Airport, Baku railway station, and the structures of automobile transport.

The fibre-optic trunk cable EPEG (Europe Persia Express Gateway) was put into operation. Partners of EPEG are Iranian TIC, Omani Omantel, Russian Rostelecom and international C & W (Cable & Wireless). The EPEG cable connecting Oman and Frankfurt, also passes through the territory of Azerbaijan, Poland and Ukraine. In each of these countries the route is organised on a rental facility basis. Azerbaijan is represented in the EPEG project by Delta Telecom whose network infrastructure is involved in the project. The data throughput of the EPEG trunk cable is 3.2 Tbit /s and its length is about 10 thousand kilometres.

The State Oil Fund of Azerbaijan is studying the possibility of acquiring commercial property in Asia and Australia. According to the investment strategy of SOFAZ, for the first time since last year up to five per cent of the fund's total investment portfolio may be invested in stocks, up to five percent - in real estate, and five percent - in gold.

Azerbaijan has a large number of oil and gas fields and prospective structures in the Caspian Sea. One of them is the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli block of oil and gas fields. Its proven oil reserves are estimated at 1.2 billion tons with gas at 350 billion cubic meters. Another large deposit is the Shah Deniz gas condensate field. Its reserves hit 1.2 trillion cubic meters of gas. According to the forecasts, gas production volume can be brought up to 24 billion cubic meters a year within the second stage of the field development.

Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) has been officially announced by the consortium on the Azerbaijani Shah Deniz gas condensate field development as a route of transporting its gas to the European markets. The TAP project is designed to transport gas from the Caspian region via Greece and Albania across the Adriatic Sea to the south of Italy and further to Western Europe. The gas produced within the second phase of development of the Azerbaijani gas condensate field Shah Deniz is regarded as the main source for the project.
