October's highlights from Mind in Haringey
View this email in your browser
It's been a great month at Mind in Haringey. Our
new Chairman, David Pascall, has brought fresh
enthusiasm to our charity and we've had a number
of great awareness raising activities, both internally
and externally, which have raised some essential
funds. You can read more about these below.
I was interviewed by the Tottenham & Wood Green
Independent newspaper where I called for more
funding for mental health services in Haringey.
This is in the same month as Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health Trust
was featured in a Panorama programme on the crisis in our mental health
services. The time is now.
Sadly we must say goodbye to our Admin Officer, Natasha Harper, who's
leaving us to learn sign language, but welcome Gemma Coleman who is filling
her shoes, and also our new Fundraiser and Comms volunteer, Suzy Barber.
CEO, Anita Hudson

Royal Parks Half Marathon
On Sunday October 11, 15 runners took part in the Royal Parks Half Marathon
on our behalf, raising a staggering £7, 010. That's one of our runners, Lucy
Luo, on the right in the image above, race number 6384. She crossed the
finishing line in just under two hours! An enormous pat on the back to
everyone who took part Lucy Luo, Suzy Barber, Josh Veenan, Milo Kerr, Cathy
Featherstone, Saskia Highcock, Neal Godsmith, Beth Evans, Leo Sudea, Hanna
AlOthman, Marina Popova and David Hemmings. Thank you all.
"Next year will be very exciting"
On September 1, Mind in Haringey welcomed a new Chairman to the
board of Trustees, David Pascall. Formerly MD of an international
private equity firm, David, 66, previously worked for 25 years at BP in
a range of senior positions and then two years at the No 10 Policy Unit
advising Margaret Thatcher. He is married with three grown up
children and has lived in Lanchester Road, Highgate, for over 30
years. He was made a CBE in 1993 for his services to education.
What made you want the role of chairman at MiH?
I’ve had a successful career, in both private and public sectors, despite
having had mental health problems. It’s but for the grace of god I’ve
survived. I retired in 2008 and felt I wanted to give something back,
particularly in the area of mental health given the help I have received in the past, so when this role
came up, I applied.
What’s your vision for Mind in Haringey?
The charity has a really good reputation and does many things very well. But with the Trustees I want to
look at the organisation’s mission, which is to help people with a mental health problem in Haringey,
to understand what that means. Should we be helping people who are suicidal, could we do more
around prevention, with GPs referring people who are beginning to feel depressed to us, and can we
expand the other services here, our counselling for example. There’s a lot of untapped potential at Mind
in Haringey that I want to explore.
Funding is always the issue. What are your thoughts about that?
We’ve got to raise more money to achieve our objectives. We’re appointing a new fundraising executive
and we’ve set up three trustee committees to support the work of the board, covering fundraising, staff
and remuneration and a finance and audit committee, all of which will meet every two months. We can’t
leave it all up to the Chief Exec without help in those areas.
I’ve got a vision but I am also listening. I haven’t always listened, as my wife will tell you, but each time
I’ve learnt and moved on a bit. I hope that at 66 I’ve finally got it right.

ART OF THE MATTER
Work inspired by great artists such as
Picasso and Dali went on display at Station
house, for a special exhibition to mark the

Artful, the show included many
impressive works produced by the group,
including sketches, watercolours and
