4. INTRODUCTION
Long ago…in a galaxy far far away…before “Star Wars”, “Mad Max”,
“Tremors”, and “Game of Thrones”.... there was only “Dune”.
Dune contains a depth of worldbuilding that is seldom matched in
science fiction. Dune also showcase powerful and influential religious
figures in the all female Bene Gesserit witches . Classic myths, with the
ledged in the Dune universe, Kwisatz Haderach is an old Chakobsa term
that translates to "shortening of the way. Ie. "Folding Space and Time
for Space travel. The Kwisatz Haderach must be male. The Bene
Gesserit have been carving the way for the mythical figure for centuries
through selective breeding-10,000 years of breeding to be precise.
5. BACKGROUND
Dune (titled onscreen as Dune: Part One) is a movie adaptation of Frank Herbert's original novel of the same name. It adapts about the
first half of the novel.
The movie is epic in scope, this 165-million-dollar celluloid creation offers a spectacular visual experience.
Dune is so masterfully shot, that you could watch this movie on mute and still be entertained.
The cinematography is Truley Oscar worthy .
As a longtime fan of David Lynch's film "Dune" it was inevitable, I would go into Denis Villeneuve's effort ready to find any fault.
Lynch's DUNE is a sentimental cinematic treasure to me and I am not willing to give it up. I was pleasantly surprised ! I mean the
source material is so fascinating with rich story telling and depth of character development it would be hard for it not to succeed and
Dune 2021 does just that.
6. REVIEW
The simplest way I can explain why this movie could be a lot better is
that I think what they try show and the parts of the story they go with
and the portrayal is all really good but the Context and the Themes of
story and why it is really Interesting, Entertaining and Thought
Provoking is missing.like the world feels really small, they don't explain
why A.I is banned in the world of Dune, why Spice is such a big deal and
what it is and what it does, who are the Bene Gesserit sisters are and
how much power do they have and what they are capable of and so
many other things and I'm not even sure that's the fault of Daniel
Villeneuve, I think it's the screenplay that's not that good as far as I
understand movies.
7. POSITIVES
COSTUMES & VISUALS
COSTUME DESIGNS OH MY GOODNESS! The intimidating and dark figures of Bene
Gesserit were absolutely incredible, none of the costumes looked goofy or
nonsensical, the navigator league's representatives in melange space suits with blue
eyes glowing through were a subtle touch of greatness. Character designs had me
gasping for air. Lady Jessica's costumes, baron Harkonnen looking TERRIFYING, his
nephew looking exactly like a tool he is...
8. NEGATIVES
The way violence and aggression are emphasized as appropriate conflict
resolution is, well, not appropriate to my way of thinking. Someone,
somewhere HAS to start depicting non-violent problem solving in film! I
know this is not a popular view! But can some filmmaker somewhere
please take a stand: let’s evolve beyond the reptilian brain and what is
now known as the “old” brain! And yes the novel has violent themes
but Herbert explores many themes
I’m not necessarily discouraging anyone from seeing it but do suggest
questioning how violence and cruelty are continually romanticized as a
way of narrating selfhood.
