Autism derives its name from Latin word autos, which implies autism is an immersion of
a man into himself. A child with autism lives in his own world; he poorly understands
and perceives events occurring around him, avoids contact with people, including
parents.
All people with autism have difficulties in three areas which are called “The triad of
impairments in autism”: lack of social interaction, impaired mutual communication,
limited interests and repetitive behavior repertoire. Autism in children is associated with
aggression and auto-aggression, destruction of property and temper tantrums. Heavy
and frequent outbursts of anger are common; this may be caused by interference with
the rituals and stereotyped schedule. The majority has a generalized lack of learning: in
50% IQ <50, in 70% <70 and almost 100% has IQ <100. The seizures occur in 25% of
children with autism often in adolescence.
It is assumed that autism is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental
factors which is why the brain’s development changes. Therefore it has been argued
that autism is not a disease but a developmental disorder.
It is believed that autism cannot be cured and there are no pills for autism.
Nevertheless, there are many methods that contribute to the training and development
of people with autism and can provide them with significant help.
