Continuous variable transmissions allow uninterrupted variation between transmission ratios by allowing the belt or chain to move continuously over the pulleys or gears rather than locking into fixed gear ratios. This results in smooth acceleration and improved fuel efficiency compared to traditional transmissions with fixed gear ratios. CVTs are increasingly common in automobiles and other machinery where variable gearing is beneficial.
