Internship Report AT&T - Summer 2015
1.
2. I, Suchit Patel a Graduate student from Southern Methodist University (SMU),
Dallas, Texas have been doing Internship for Summer2015 at AT&T Foundry. My
position during the course of the Internship was Technical Development &
Research Assistant - Foundry in the AT&T Integrated Cloud (AIC) project.
The AT&T Integrated cloud (AIC) department evaluates and integrate a variety of
archiving solutions to meet the specific business or technical requirements across
multiple AT&T businesses. The AIC team is responsible for delivering set of
architectures and solutions that deliver cost effective, scalable and robust storage
for virtualized and distributed server platforms. The goal of the AIC team is to bring
out the possible solutions for faster, better and cheaper storage for private and
public cloud. New technologies spur new products in the market and it is typically
better for any enterprise to stay up with new technologies for faster and better
products, based on that AIC team was migrating from Icehouse to Juno release, for
better security supported features. The engineering team also deals with any flaws
or bugs that occur in storage products and provide solution to eliminate or resolve
that issue.
In the 1st
week I was made familiar with what AIC is and also I was provided with
the information on the LCP and DCP architecture of it so that I get to learn how
exactly it works. Also I was told to read the OpenStack Documents, Mirantis
Documents, AT&T Wiki links and watch the Vancouver Summit 2015 videos for
solid understanding of what OpenSource is and what specifically OpenStack is?
In the 2nd
week I learnt how to build DevStack server on overlay network and also
about the various services that DevStack server serves such as Horizon, Nova,
Neutron, Glance, Swift, Cinder, Keystone. I also got an idea about how to create a
tenant, create a user, setup a network, create a Virtual Machine, load images, and
storage on Horizon. I also learnt about how to perform modifications on the Virtual
Machine for example pause, suspend, resume, resize, reboot, create load-balancer,
delete a snapshot, etc.
During the 3rd
week I was told to install Python and execute CLI commands through
Python for installing various OpenStack components. For this they held a
conference meeting where they taught us how to implement it in order to give
hands on and gain practical experience. Also we met the Vice President of AT&T
AIC project where he asked us about our experience so far and our future goals. He
3. gave us few tips to implement and move forward in the corporate life. He even
shared some of his experience which was helpful for me and I could probably keep
that in mind for making future decisions. We also learnt about how and why AIC
Team uses Agile Methodology. It is very important in every corporate offices,
because it has ability to manage changing projects, increased productivity, improve
team morale, and reduce risk and many other factors. Also we were taught and
explained the difference between Waterfall and Agile Methodology.
In the 4th
week we were given more information on the tools used in AIC
performance monitoring and testing such as Tempest, SoapUI, Python and Rally
tools. Also we were taken on tour of AT&T campus, which included AT&T modular
data center, Internet of things department which included very unique and
different approach to the upcoming new technology, Big Data department and
AT&T U-verse lab tour.
Conclusion:
Having taken Software Defined Network in my 2nd
semester I had opportunity to
get theoretical knowledge in that filed but never really got the opportunity to get
practical experience on it. This Internship was helpful in terms of getting that
hands-on experience and also helped me to work in a team. On completion of
summer internship I can now correlate the practical working in networking and
cloud related concepts with the academic course and its vitality & work in actual
industry environment. It also helped me in gaining knowledge about the latest
technologies. To conclude my experience as an intern at AT&T helped me a lot in
gaining industrial experience as well as I learnt a lot about the evolving technology
SDN and its implementation in AIC.
I certify this report is true description of my Internship work.
