Many people these days store their personal information and business
paperwork on memory sticks or external hard drives – IT
professionals positively encourage it for back-up reasons.
However, there will eventually be so much information in the world that
solid-state drives (SSDs) and hard-disk drives (HDDs) as they are
now won't be able to keep up.
2. This is according to senior vice president of hard drive manufacturer
Gary Gentry, who was keynote speaker at the Flash Memory Summit in
California this week, The Register reports.
He explained that by 2020, global data capacity will have reached
around six zettabytes, with everything from medical data to aviation
intelligence needing to be retained for future reference.
"Any kind of product you can imagine is going to be needed to
stay up with that demand. It's going to take all companies and all
industries investing heavily to stay up with that big data that's in
front of us," Mr Gentry commented.
3. He insisted that the future is about "flash and HDD", but will this be
safe and secure enough for industry needs?
It comes after a study at the University of Ohio and HP Labs tested
SSDs by exposing them to common situations including power loss,
InfoWorld reported. Out of 15, 13 suffered failure such as bit and
metadata corruption, with some losing data altogether. It means that
companies relying on SSDs such as USB sticks could be taking a huge
risk.
4. My Wealth Cloud chief operating officer Chris Willford suggests storage
in the cloud is set to become more important in terms of backing up
files in future, which may mean we start to move away from the
memory sticks we all know as time goes by.
